Exact and heuristic methods for heterogeneous assembly line balancing problems of type 2.

Borba, Leonardo de Miranda January 2018 (has links)
The difference among workstations is assumed to be negligible in traditional assembly lines. Heterogeneous assembly lines consider the problem of industries in which the task times vary according to some property to be selected for the task. In the Assembly Line Worker Assignment and Balancing Problem (ALWABP), workers are assigned to workstations and according to their abilities, they execute tasks in different amounts of time. In some cases they can even be incapable of executing some tasks. In the Robotic Assembly Line Balancing Problem (RALBP) there are different types of robots and each station must be executed by a robot. Multiple robots of the same type may be used. We propose exact and heuristic methods for minimizing the cycle time of these two problems, for a fixed number of stations. The problems have similar characteristics that are explored to produce lower bounds, heuristic methods, mixed-integer programming models, and reduction and dominance rules. For the branching strategy of the branch-and-bound method, however, the differences among the problem force the use of two different algorithms. A task-oriented strategy has the best results for the ALWABP-2 while a station-oriented strategy has the best results for the RALBP-2. The lower bounds, heuristics, MIP models and branch-and-bound algorithms for these two problems are shown to be competitive with the state-of-the-art methods in the literature.

Moteurs Moléculaires Cristallins Photo-pilotés

Lemouchi, Cyprien 14 October 2010 (has links) (PDF)

Studies Towards the Discovery of Antibacterial Natural Products and the Development of a Novel Ruthenium-Catalyzed Homo Diels-Alder [2+2+2] Cycloaddition

Kettles, Tanner James 19 April 2012 (has links)
The isolation and identification of the active constituents from an Allium sp. extract possessing antibacterial activity was undertaken. The plant material of interest was extracted, purified and screened for antibacterial activity against a Gram positive bacteria. Multiple trials were performed and the isolation was scaled-up repeatedly, overall three compounds potentially possess the observed activity. One compound was identified to yield the majority of activity, and a refined procedure for its purification was established. Initial characterization studies demonstrated the major isolate of interest is novel compared to other isolates from the Allium genus. A ruthenium-catalyzed homo Diels-Alder [2+2+2] cycloaddition between bicyclo[2.2.1]hepta-2,5-diene and alkynyl phosphonates was also studied. The observed reactivity was found to be dependent on the presence of the phosphonate moiety. The cycloaddition was compatible with a variety of aromatic and aliphatic substituted alkynyl phosphonates providing the corresponding phosphonate substituted deltacyclenes in low to good yields (up to 88%).

ROLE OF CYCLOOXYGENASE-2 IN ABDOMINAL AORTIC ANEURYSMS IN MICE

Mukherjee, Kamalika 01 January 2012 (has links)
Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a chronic inflammatory disease with no available pharmacological treatment. AAA formation reduces the structural integrity of the vessel and increases the susceptibility to rupture. The inflammatory response within human aneurysmal tissue is characterized by increased expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). Similarly, in a mouse model of the disease induced by chronic Angiotensin II (AngII) infusion, we have shown that COX-2 expression in the abdominal aortic smooth muscle layer increases early in the development of the disease. Furthermore, genetic or pharmacological inactivation of COX-2 prior to disease initiation reduces AAA incidence. The current study utilized nonhyperlipidemic mice to determine the effectiveness of COX-2 inhibition initiated after AAA formation. COX-2 inhibitor treatment was initiated 5 days after beginning the AngII infusion, a time-point where significant aneurysmal pathology is observed. COX-2 inhibition with celecoxib significantly reduced the incidence as well as severity of AAAs as compared to the control group. Celecoxib treatment also protected the mice from aortic rupture and death. AAA development is characterized by degradation of the aortic smooth muscle layer with loss of the contractile phenotype. We found that the effectiveness of celecoxib was associated with significantly increased mRNA expression of alpha-actin, SM22alpha and desmin, all of which are markers of a differentiated smooth muscle cell phenotype. Celecoxib treatment also decreased mRNA expression of a marker of dedifferentiated smooth muscle (hyaluronic acid synthase 2). We also examined the role of altered expression of COX-2 in the increased susceptibility of the abdominal segment to AAA formation. We found a prolonged and greater induction of COX-2 in the abdominal aortic smooth muscle layer in contrast to a transient induction of COX-2 in the other regions of the aorta throughout disease progression. Overall, these findings suggest that COX-2 plays an important role in AAA development in mice, and COX-2 inhibition with celecoxib attenuates progression of aneurysm development by maintaining a differentiated phenotype in abdominal aortic smooth muscle cells.

Behavioural responses in mice exposed to predator odour components

Sjöström, Desirée January 2014 (has links)
It is essential for prey species to be able to detect predators to avoid them. The sense of smell is used by a number of prey species for this purpose. The aim of the present study was to assess if one of the odourants that make up a predator odour is sufficient to induce a behavioural response in mice (Mus musculus). Two predator odourants were used, 2,2-dimethylthietane and methyl-2-phenylethyl sulfide, which are both found in the secretions of natural predators of mice. An odourant found in fruits, n-pentyl acetate, was also used. All three odourants were presented at a concentration that was a factor of 100 above the olfactory detection threshold of mice. Ten adult predator-naïve CD-1 mice were individually put in a two-compartment chamber one of which contained an odourant while the other contained a near-odourless solvent (diethyl phthalate). The results indicated that methyl-2-phenylethyl sulfide was actively avoided by the mice. Towards 2,2-dimethylthietane and n-pentyl acetate, in contrast, the mice behaved indifferent. Further, the results suggest a significant correlation between the number of switches between the two compartments of the test chamber and the test sessions when the animals were presented with n-pentyl acetate, but not when they were presented with the predator odourants. The results support the notion of an innate fear response towards the predator odourant methyl-2-phenylethyl sulfide in mice, but further studies with more animals and different concentrations of the odourants are necessary.
