Evaluation of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Booklet Written in Chinese for Chinese-American Patients

Class of 2009 Abstract / OBJECTIVES: To evaluate an educational booklet written in Chinese designed for Chinese-Americans with Type 2 diabetes mellitus. METHODS: Healthcare professionals who work with Chinese-American patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus and proficiency in writing Chinese developed an educational booklet on Type 2 diabetes. An expert panel of Chinese American pharmacists and dietitians evaluated the booklet by rating language appropriateness, ease of reading, ease of locating information, overall presentation of the booklet, and usefulness of the booklet in a practice setting. Topics of the booklet were assessed for accuracy, relevance, and irrelevance. RESULTS: Questionnaires were completed by 8 healthcare professionals. In the expert panel, there were five pharmacists and three dietitians. Of the three dietitians, two were certified diabetes educator. The panel rated the booklet very highly; the mean overall rating was 22.4(±1.2) with 25 being the highest possible score. Overall, 100% of the evaluators would recommend this booklet for patients in their setting. CONCLUSIONS: Healthcare professionals found the booklet to be accurate, culturally relevant, and useful for their Chinese- American patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Sammanfattning    Bakgrund. Diabetes mellitus är en folksjukdom. Det finns flera olika typer av diabetes, typ 1 och typ 2 är de vanligaste formerna, cirka 85–90 procent av de som har diabetes har typ-2 diabetes. Diabetes är en kronisk sjukdom som kräver livslång behandling. Livsstilsförändringar är en viktig del i behandlingen och sjuksköterskan har en stödjande och betydelsefull roll. Teoretisk referensram Litteraturstudien utgår från personcentrerad vård. Patienten är en person som har vilja, förmåga och behov. Syfte Syftet var att beskriva sjuksköterskeledd intervention vid livsstilsförändringar hos personer med typ-2 diabetes.    Metod Metoden som använts var en litteraturstudie. Elva vetenskapliga artiklar med både kvantitativ och kvalitativ ansatts valdes ut. Resultat Tre kategorier identifierades i analysprocessen: Möte på personens nivå, Stöd från gruppen och Telefonkontakt. Intervention på personens nivå var en betydande faktor för att lyckas med livsstilsförändring. Gruppbaserad undervisning gav deltagarna en känsla av stöd från andra och ett utbyte av erfarenheter. Telefonbaserad intervention är enkel att implementera i vården, kostnadseffektiv och kan pågå under längre tid. Slutsats Kontinuerlig långsiktig kontakt med sjukvården på personens nivå underlättar och bibehåller livsstilsförändringar. Interventioner via telefon och i grupp ses som kostnadseffektivt.

Memoria para optar al título de periodista / El autor no autoriza el acceso a texto completo de su documento / Desde la creación del Canal 2 de Televisión (en ese tiempo Rock & Pop), en agosto de 1995, nuestra diaria ocupación ha sido la de desarrollar programas de televisión. En su particular diseño, el proyecto Rock & Pop, como canal de televisión abierta, abría la posibilidad de ser una alternativa de expresión para gente e ideas que, con bastante probabilidad, nunca hubieran podido acceder a los medios tradicionales. Más allá de los errores técnicos o de planificación que acompañaron los primeros meses de transmisión, al poco andar el canal evidenció que la gente que se había involucrado en el proyecto –incluidos nosotros- poco o nada sabía del medio. Esta falencia, sin embargo, permitió afrontar el tema televisivo sin los prejuicios económicos y estéticos propios de la gente más ligada al ambiente, y aunque el canal no tuvo en ningún caso un éxito financiero, dentro de él pudieron realizarse valiosos aportes a la producción televisiva. Ingresamos a trabajar como peridistas de apoyo al programa Gato Por Liebre. Este fue un espacio magazinesco centrado en la política, conducido por Angel Carcavilla, Carolina Delpiano y Rafael Gumucio. En él, nuestras funciones eran diversas: notas periodísticas, libretos, videos de humor y voces en off. La veta humorística de Gato por Liebre, planteó la necesidad de realizar un programa dedicado exclusivamente a ese corte, en que se privilegiara una preocupación por la realidad chilena sin depender de la contingencia noticiosa. El resultado fue Plan Z, un programa de muy bajo presupuesto, en el que los realizadores escribíamos los libretos, actuábamos las situaciones y editábamos el producto terminado. Plan Z nos permitió explorar la narrativa televisiva de ficción, como asimismo acentuó la experimentación visual en la edición. Ambos programas obtuvieron críticas destacadas y fueron considerados entre los proyectos de mayor importancia del canal. Finalmente, se completaron cinco temporadas de Gato por Liebre, y dos de Plan Z alternadamente, antes de que el equipo se desarticulara debido a los distintos intereses profesionales de sus participantes. A fines de 1997, los tres conductores –y rostros más reconocibles de nuestros programas- abandonaron el canal. Nosotros nos quedamos.

The goal of this database is to 1) document acoustic changes in speech production that may be related to physical growth 2) inform development of a model of speech production for child talkers. This work was funded by NSF BSC-1145011 awarded to Kate Bunton, Ph.D. and Brad Story, Ph.D, Principal Investigators. This database contains longitudinal audio recordings of 55 American English speaking children between the ages of 2-7 at 3-month intervals. Since children began the study at different ages, some children have fewer recording sessions than others. The database can also be used to provide cross-sectional data for children of a specific age. All children were recorded using the same protocol; therefore, task numbers are consistent across children and sessions. A calibration tone is included as Record 1 for all sessions. In addition, the protocol includes several nonsense vowel-to-vowel transitions. Speakers were prompted either verbally by investigators or by graphical prompts. Effective leadership behaviors among public university presidents : comparison of France and Iran / Les comportements de leadership efficace des présidents d’universités publiques : comparaison France-Iran

Aujourd'hui, la notion de gestion a été remplacée par celle de leadership. Le leadership et ses impacts sur la performance de l'organisation ont été étudiés par de nombreux chercheurs. Cependant, peu d’études ont porté sur le leadership efficace dans les universités en tant que type d'organisation. L'enseignement supérieur français a récemment connu une réforme importante (LRU). Les débats sur ses aspects positifs et négatifs ont été vifs et le sont encore. Dans le cadre de cette réforme, le leadership semble avoir plus d'importance, dans la mesure où une plus grande autonomie voire plus de pouvoir formel ont été délégués aux présidents d'université. Dans notre recherche, nous avons étudié les comportements de leadership efficace chez les présidents d'universités françaises, et nous les avons comparés avec les mêmes comportements chez les présidents d'universités Iraniennes. Prenant en compte des facteurs sociaux, culturels et politiques, ces comparaisons donnent des résultats intéressants. Pour nos recherches, nous avons utilisé la théorie du leadership de Kouzes et Posner (2003), qui ont identifié cinq comportements de leadership efficace (Model the way, Inspire a shared vision, Challeng the process, Enable others to act, Encourage the heart) et développé des questionnaires d’Inventaires de Pratiques de Leadership (Leadership Practices Inventaire, LPI) à partir de visions croisés (Questionnaires «Soi » et «autres»). L'objectif principal est d'évaluer dans quelle mesure les présidents d'université français et iraniens sont impliqués dans ces comportements. Les questionnaires LPI, ainsi que huit questions ouvertes, ont été soumis à tous les présidents d'universités publiques en Iran et en France, et à cinq vice-présidents de chaque université. Nous avons reçu un total de 107 réponses sur la France et 72 réponses en l'Iran. Les résultats ont été analysés en utilisant SPSS 11.5, et une analyse de contenu a été réalisée pour des questions ouvertes. Les réponses des vice-présidents montrent que les présidents d'université français présentent des scores plus élevés dans tous les comportements de leadership efficace par rapport aux présidents Iraniens. En outre, sur la base des réponses des présidents eux-mêmes, les présidents français ont score plus élevé sur quatre comportements, tandis que les présidents Iraniens s’estiment plus impliqués dans le comportement « mettre en question les processus » (Challenging the process). Toutefois, les scores des deux pays sont faibles en comparaison des scores globaux moyens aux LPI pour les dirigeants d'autres pays, y compris des dirigeants nord-américains. Les interprétations possibles de cette différence sont discutées en détail. / Nowadays the notion of management has been replaced by leadership. Leadership and its impacts on organization performance have been studied by many researchers. However, not many studies have focused on effective leadership in universities as a kind of organization. French higher education underwent a substantial reform recently (LRU). And there is still much debate about its positive and negative aspects. In light of these reforms, leadership seems to gain more importance, as more autonomy and power is delegated to the university presidents. In this research, we study effective leadership behaviors among French university presidents, and compare them with the same behaviors among Iranian university presidents. Considering different social, cultural and political background, comparison of two countries would yield interesting results.For our research, we used Kouzes and Posner’s theory of leadership (2003), who identified five effective leadership behaviors (Model the way, Inspire a shared vision, Challeng the process, Enable others to act, and Encourage the heart) and developed Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) questionnaire (‘Self’ and ‘Others’ versions). The main objective is to evaluate to what extent French and Iranian university presidents are engaged in these behaviors. LPI, as well as eight open-ended questions, were submitted to all public university presidents in Iran and France, and five vice presidents in each university. We received a total of 107 responses from France and 72 responses from Iran. The results were analyzed using SPSS 11.5, and content analysis was performed for open-ended questions. The results show that, according to vice presidents opinion, the French university presidents had higher scores in all effective leadership behaviors compared to Iranian presidents. Also, based on the presidents’ opinion, French presidents had higher score in four behaviors, while Iranian presidents were more involved in ‘Challenging the process’ behavior. However, scores from both countries were lagging behind, compare to overall average score received by other leaders filing this questionnaire, including North American leaders. Possible reasons for this difference are discussed in detail.
