Reflection and refraction of transient electromagnetic wave on a flat surface

Chou, Sue-kai 30 August 2012 (has links)
The problem is effect of electromagnetic wave. When electromagnetic wave obliquely transmitted through two different medias ,electromagnetic wave undergoes reflection and refraction at the interface and inside the media. Computation of electromagnetic wave is well known by Maxwell`s equation. There are two cases solving questions. One is constant of £g¡B£`¡B£m.Another is variable of £g¡B£`¡B£m. In case one, use D`Alembertian equation and Helmholtz equation transforming Maxwell`s equation. And solve by ILHI`s(incomplete Lips-chitz-Hankel integrals) and FFT(fast Fourier transform). In case two,if £g¡B£`¡B£m are variables ,we can simplify Maxwell`s equation. It is similar to wave equation with source. We use Finite Element Method(FEM) getting Numerical solution by setting absorbing boundary and mesh. Using results by ILHI`s would get exact solution obliquely incident on two medias. Proof numerical solution by exact solution.

Structural Studies of Thioredoxin S-nitrosation and Detection of Protein S-nitrosothiols by Phosphine Derivatization

The, Juliana January 2013 (has links)
S-nitrosylation (or S-nitrosation) has emerged as an important pathway of non-classical nitric oxide signaling. This post-translational modification involves the transfer of a nitroso group onto a cysteine residue and has been shown to regulate protein function. However, very little is known about the mechanism and structure-dependent factors of the modification. Understanding of S-nitrosothiol chemistry has lagged behind that for the classical nitric oxide signaling pathway due to challenges and limitations of current detection methods of S-nitrosothiols. The S-N bond is typically labile and indirect detection by traditional biotin switch method has low sensitivity and is prone to false positives. In this work, I have explored phosphine derivatization as a new direct approach to labeling protein S-nitrosothiols. Syntheses of aza-ylide derivatives of small organic S-nitrosothiols were successful and the termolecularity of the reaction was overcome by using a bisphosphine. Similarly, S-nitrosated cysteines of thioredoxin were successfully derivatized with the phosphine TCEP and identified by tandem mass spectrometry of the digested protein. Surprisingly, derivatization of S-nitrosoglutathione was found to be unsuccessful and ¹⁸O-labeling of the reaction indicated hydrolysis of the aza-ylide product. We hypothesize that solvent effects are the source of this discrepancy. In addition, x-ray crystallography studies were undertaken to investigate structural rearrangement of a thioredoxin helix to expose residue Cys 62 to S-nitrosation. A new structure of thioredoxin Q63A/C69S/C73S mutant was found to exhibit a highly dynamic N-terminal loop surrounding the pocket of Cys 62 which could have an effect on S-nitrosation of this residue.

Scope and Mechanism of a Novel Base Induced Cyclization of Benzyl 1 Alkynyl Sulfones

Hossain, Mohammad Selim 20 November 2012 (has links)
Recent work has shown that sulfones are unique synthetic tools capable of undergoing numerous transformations and reactions. The sulfone group is a strong electron withdrawing group and has the ability to stabilize an α-sulfonyl carbanion. As such, unsaturated sulfones can undergo a variety of reactions, i.e. conjugate additions, alkylation etc. Beside this, α sulfonyl carbanion can be generated with strong base and α sulfonyl carbanion can also be used in various reactions. This report is an investigation of a novel base induced cyclization of various alkynyl sulfones. The results revealed that the reaction does not significantly depend on the electronic effects of substituents in the aromatic ring. Additional versatility in this process was demonstrated with respect to a diverse array of functionality at various positions i.e. benzylic position, aromatic ring and terminal position of alkyne. These alkynyl sulfones, bearing a larger group at ortho position and any group at benzylic position underwent intramolecular cyclization when treated with base affording benzothiopyran S,S-dioxide. The results demonstrated that the cyclization efficiency was significantly influenced by the steric effects of substituents of aromatic ring at ortho positions and blocking the terminal position with phenyl since the cyclization reaction gave low or no yields with aromatic rings having a substituent at para, meta or to position than those having no substituent. It was also found that 2-thiophenylmethyl sulfones cyclize more efficiently than benzyl and furfuryl sulfones. The evidence from mechanistic studies points to a mechanism for the cyclization that involves disruption of aromaticity. To disrupt aromaticity, a deprotonation at benzylic position is a requirement for this cyclization reaction. Results suggest that the cyclization also requires an available hydrogen at the point where the potential ring would be fused. Several intermediates were also observed spectroscopically and identified by ReactIR®.
