Determinants of Compassion Fatigue in Acute Care Nursing

Nurses experiencing compassion fatigue (CF) are emotionally exhausted, which contributes to decreased nurse retention and patient satisfaction. The focus of this project was to identify factors that contribute to CF. A systematic review was conducted to identify demographic factors that contribute to CF in the acute care setting, clarify the types of care situations that increase CF, and describe the social support networks of nursing units influencing CF. The review included peer-reviewed journal articles published between 2007 and 2018 that focused on registered nurses in the acute care setting. Using the grading of recommendation assessment development and evaluation format, 3 articles in Level of Evidence 1 and 11 articles in Level of Evidence 3 were included in this review. Findings showed that demographic factors such as age, gender, level of education, and years as a nurse contributed to CF. Care situations that contribute to CF include mixed-acuity-level patient units and an increase in administrative duties that are not directly related to patient care. A nursing unit's social support network has a direct impact on reducing CF: Units with peer support and respect have less CF, units with managers who are active and listen to staff have lower CF, and units with a change in management or nursing practice have higher levels of CF. Implications of this study for social change include approaches to help nurses balance care of patients and administrative tasks as well as creating education on factors that lead to CF. Interventions focused on promoting a working environment in which nurses' input is valued may prevent nurses from leaving their jobs or the nursing profession, which could improve patient satisfaction with nursing care.

COMPASSION FATIGUE, BURNOUT, AND SELF-CARE: WHAT SOCIAL WORK STUDENTS NEED TO KNOW

This thesis attempted to examine the impact of self-care, compassion fatigue and burnout on social work students. This was achieved through the use of a Demographic Survey, the Self-Care Assessment, the Professional Quality of Life-IV (ProQOL-IV) survey, and the Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS). A total of three research questions were examined statistically, that included: the most common methods of self-care employed, the overall levels of compassion fatigue, and the overall levels of burnout. Title 4e was also taken into consideration when developing and designing the questions and summary recommendations. Questionnaires were sent out electronically, with an actual response rate of twenty eight percent. A Spearman’s Correlation, Cronbach Alpha, and t-test were used to analyze the data to determine if certain variables were affected when compared to each other. There was evidence by the data that the participants are very knowledgeable of self-care in such areas as spirituality, psychological care, emotional care, and a balanced work/professional life. The area that did show a difference was between age and self-care. Older students tended to have lower burnout and compassion fatigue issues compared to their younger counterparts. For future research, it is recommended that similar studies be conducted on BASW and MSW students to insure they have a clear understanding of burnout, how to it happens, and how best to avoid it.

Compassion Fatigue, Burnout and Self-care Strategies Amongst Los Angeles County Child Welfare Workers

Child welfare social workers have extremely demanding jobs, which may often lead to burnout and compassion fatigue. The purpose of this research study was to explore self-care methods implemented by child welfare social workers, the methods that work best for them and the ways in which these practices assist in preventing and reducing the risks of compassion fatigue and burnout. This research study also explored the ways in which child welfare social workers have been able to cope and prevent compassion fatigue and burnout. This research study utilized a qualitative, exploratory research approach. Face-to-face interviews with fifteen participants were taken place at the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) offices within Los Angeles County. These interviews took place at various times and days. One major key finding from this study was the need for improvement in organizational support. Another key finding was the importance of self-care when coping with the daily stressors in the workplace and the ways in which self-care provides an outlet for preventing compassion fatigue and burnout. Participants all had different forms of self-care that worked best for their own wellbeing. It was determined that self-care strategies effectiveness depended on each individual’s response to the approach. Determining the best ways for social workers to cope with traumatic experiences in the workplace allows for administration to strengthen policies, such as ongoing training and supervision, while also being aware of the signs that child welfare social workers may display when they are experiencing compassion fatigue and burnout.

VOLUNTEER SERVICE AS A COPING STRATEGY FOR SOCIAL WORKERS AGAINST PROFESSIONAL BURNOUT

Burnout is a prominent issue among the social work profession. Methods to mitigate the effects of burnout have received considerable attention in social work research. This study focuses on a potential method of coping with burnout; volunteerism. While literature is scarce regarding the effects of volunteerism on burnout rates among social workers, studies in related fields such as nursing, public-sector public administrators, and nonprofit workers indicate that volunteerism has potential benefits against burnout. This study’s purpose is to determine whether involvement in volunteer service is related to lower rates of burnout among social workers. This quantitative study uses data from a non-random purposive sample of 442 social workers who completed a survey posted on the social work board of an online forum, Reddit and the networking site, LinkedIn. Survey questions captured participants’ demographic, volunteerism, and burnout rates using the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS). Analysis of the data led to findings which do not support the original hypothesis of this study or the available literature. A plausible explanation is, that for social workers, the volunteer work is so like their profession that engaging in volunteerism does not provide the respite necessary for recovery from the effects of burnout.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SELF-CARE AND BURNOUT AMONG SOCIAL WORK STUDENTS

Currently, burnout is a significant issue affecting college students across the world. With the increasing economic, academic, and social pressures of college life, occurrences of burnout out may hinder graduation rates along with the physical and mental health of college students. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between self-care and burnout among social work students. A total of 76 students recruited from a Hispanic-serving institution in Southern California constituted the sample of this study. The Kruskal-Wallis H Test was used to analyze the correlation between self-care and burnout. The findings revealed a strong correlation between the aforementioned variables at the statistical significance level (p < .001). Implications for social work educations were discussed.

Building a Compassion Fatigue Toolkit

Compassion is an important tenet of nursing care delivery. When compassion is compromised, such as with compassion fatigue (CF), not only is patient care compromised, but also caregivers can be physically and psychologically affected, resulting in stress and burnout. The purpose of this project was to create a web-based educational toolkit focused on prevention of CF, establish the content validity of the elements in this toolkit, and make recommendations regarding its implementation and sustainability. Watson's theory of human caring guided this project. Ten experts with at least 10 years of experience and CF knowledge, a bachelor's degree in nursing, and certification or leadership experience validated the toolkit content using a content validity index. Ten toolkit elements were evaluated on a scale of 0 to 1, with a score of 0.79 or greater indicating relevance to content. Items meeting the score included the definition of CF, signs and symptoms, resources to prevent CF, the CF pledge, tools and links, and the goal and mission of the toolkit. A toolkit on CF might impact social change by providing resources for nurses to recognize and prevent CF, thus improving patient care.

<p>Tidigare forskning har påvisat en signifikant positiv korrelation mellan empati och utbrändhet bland personal inom omvårdnadsrelaterade yrken. Utbrändhet anses överlag vara ett problem inom alla yrken. Läraryrket kan medföra omtanke om elever samt ansvarstagande och ses ibland som ett mycket stressfyllt arbete. Syftet med denna studie var att undersöka om lärares empatiska förmågor går att utpeka som relevanta faktorer vid predicering av utbrändhet. Studien uppmätte empatisk förmåga med enkätfrågor ur Pers Q och nyttjade det validerade instrumentet MBI-GS för att mäta den självupplevda graden av utbrändhet. I motsats till tidigare forskning visade denna studie på signifikanta, negativa samband mellan empatifaktorerna och graden av upplevd utbrändhet. Studien hade en kvantitativ ansats och omfattade 137 respondenter med ett lågt internt bortfall.</p>

<p>Stressrelaterad ohälsa återfinns bland de vanligaste orsakerna till sjukfrånvaro i Sverige enligt statistik 2009. För att namnge stressrelaterad ohälsa används bl a utbrändhet, utmattningssyndrom och utmattningsdepression. Den förstnämnda benämningen anses som en olämplig felaktigt förmedlande direktöversättning ifrån det engelska ordet burnout medan den andra och tredje benämningen används och fungerar som erkända begrepp. Det utmattade tillståndet innebär en mängd fysiologiska och psykiska besvär däribland den basala emotionen rädsla och komplexa emotionen ångest. Syftet med undersökningen var att djupstudera dessa emotioner i samband med utmattningssyndrom. I undersökningen deltog 8 personer med erfarenhet av fenomenet. Skriftligen beskrivna svar bearbetades och analyserades enligt metoden meningskoncentrering. I resultatet redovisas fysiologiska och psykiska upplevelser i samband med rädsla och ångest samt tankar och beteenden som upplevdes föregå och/eller förvärra rädslan och ångesten. Upplevelserna kännetecknades av mångfald och gemensamhet där djupgående beskrivningar kan bidra till en ökad kunskap och förståelse samt utgöra en grund för identifiering. Rädslan och ångesten utgör en del i en upplevd komplex problematik kring utmattningssyndrom .</p>

Syftet med studien var att finna faktorer som har</p><p>bidragit till återgången i arbete för fem kvinnor som drabbats av</p><p>utmattningssymtom. Kriterierna för urvalet var att kvinnorna hade haft</p><p>självskattade utmattningssymtom, var anställda inom Vilhelmina Kommun,</p><p>och hade kommit tillbaka till arbetet. Kvinnorna intervjuades med</p><p>utgångspunkt från områdena sociala-, privata- och organisatoriska</p><p>framgångsfaktorer. Det framgick att inom området för sociala faktorer var det</p><p>olika former av samtal som hade haft stor betydelse för tillbakagången. Inom</p><p>området för privata faktorer gällde det hjälpen till beteende- och</p><p>livsstilsförändringar, och i området för organisatoriska faktorer framgick att det</p><p>var betydelsefullt med en god kontakt med arbetsledare och arbetskamrater</p><p>samt möjlighet till arbete utifrån de egna förutsättningarna. Slutsatsen är att</p><p>satsningar inom dessa områden kan hjälpa individer med utmattningssymtom</p><p>tillbaka till arbete samt förebygga att friska anställda drabbas av tillståndet.</p>

En studie om hur kvinnor som varit sjukskrivna för utmattningssyndrom upplevt sin behandling

<p>I studien undersöks hur kvinnor som varit sjukskrivna för utmattningssyndrom upplevt den behandling de fått. Studien är en kvalitativ undersökning som har baserats på fyra semistrukturerade intervjuer. Dessa är gjorda i en mellanstor svensk kommun där undersökningsgruppen bestod av fyra kvinnor. Kvinnorna valdes ut med hjälp av kontakter. Intervjufrågorna har inte använts tidigare utan har konstruerats utifrån studiens syfte. Till hjälp med dokumentationen användes en bandspelare. Tryckt litteratur, internetsidor, vetenskapliga studier samt de intervjuade kvinnorna har använts som källor. Utifrån intervjuerna har kategorier bildats som sedan redovisats i resultatet. Resultatet visade vilken form av behandling dessa kvinnor blivit erbjudna och upplevelsen av behandlingsformen. Vidare visar resultatet vad informanterna saknat i behandlingen och vilka önskemål om förbättring som fanns för att minska risken för återfall. Majoriteten av kvinnorna blev erbjudna behandling i form av samtal med kurator eller psykolog. Kvinnorna var nöjda med samtalsterapi som behandlingsform. Samtliga blev erbjudna mediciner och flertalet upplevde en positiv effekt av dessa. Kvinnorna talade om ett behov av att träffa andra individer i liknande situation för att finna stöd och ha möjlighet att byta erfarenheter. Resultatet visade att samtliga kvinnor hade önskemål om gruppträffar med aktiviteter som en del av behandlingen. Vidare påpekades avsaknaden av uppföljning efter avslutad behandling. Slutsatsen är att det finns behov av alternativ till den som behandling som sjukvården erbjuder, där en hälsopedagog kan fylla en viktig roll.</p> / <p>The study examines how women who were on sick leave for experience of burnout and the treatment they received. The study was based on four semi-structured interviews. These are made of a medium-sized Swedish municipality in which the study group consisted of four women. The women were selected through contacts. Interview questions were not used in the past, they have been constructed out of the study purpose. To help with the documentation tape recorder has been used. Printed books, Internet sites, scientific studies and the interviewed women were used as sources. The interviews showed categories which have been retorted in the result. The results showed what kind of treatment these women have been offered and how they experienced the treatment. Furthermore, the results show what the informants lacked in the treatment and desire for improvement, which was to reduce the risk of relapse. The majority of the women were offered treatment in the form of conversations with a counselor or psychologist and those women were satisfied with counseling as therapy. All were offered drugs and the majority experienced a positive effect of these. The women spoke of a need to meet other individuals in similar situations to find support and have the opportunity to share experiences. The results showed that all women had requests for meetings with group activities as a part of the treatment. It was further stated the lack of follow-up after completion of treatment. The conclusion is that there is a need for alternatives to the offered treatment service, where a health educator can play an important role.</p>
