City branding on Instagram: DMOs and their usage of affordances

Fokkema, Mark January 2016 (has links)
Technological developments such as social media have created challenges for DMOs (destination marketing organisations or destination management organisations). DMOs are trying to keep up with development of new social media platforms including Instagram. Academic literature shows that there is very little known about the usage of Instagram by DMOs. Research on this topic is still in its infancy. This thesis aims to find out how Leeuwarden and Amsterdam, two cities in the Netherlands, are utilising Instagram by using affordances approaches of Kietzmann et al. and Spector. A qualitative case study, as well as a content analysis and interviews provide insight in DMOs usage of Instagram affordances, which is the purpose of this thesis. Findings show that both Leeuwarden and Amsterdam mostly use similar ways in utilising the affordances by Kietzmann et al. and Spector. The honeycomb model by Kietzmann et al. shows that the affordances of Instagram mainly focus on sharing, identity and relationships. Instagram does in a very limited way focus on groups. Spector’s affordances show that collaboration, interaction and creativity are most important. Reflection, dialogue, organisation and inquiry are not important.

Att leva i en berg- och dalbana : Fem kvinnors upplevelser av att leva med bipolär sjukdom

Hennel, Sofia, Lukjanov, Sanna January 2016 (has links)
Background: Bipolar disorder is a life-threatening disease characterized by hypomania, mania and depression, which influences both the affected as well as the relatives. The illegal targeting of healthcare in the Yemen armed conflict: A quantitative and qualitative content analysis of the experiences of humanitarian actors and the Yemeni population

Kirschbaum, Lisa Christina January 2019 (has links)
The illegal targeting of healthcare in armed conflict is nothing new but its continuance and impunity at a time when the protection of it has formally never been higher, for instance through the UNSC Resolution 2286, motivated this study. Therefore, the thesis analyses how the illegal targeting of healthcare affect humanitarian actors operating in Yemen as well as the local population. How the population and humanitarian actors perceive and interpret the violent targeting of healthcare was explored as well.    This study is based on a quantitative and qualitative content analysis of 11 media outlets and 25 documents provided by humanitarian actors. As a theoretical framework the humanitarian principles, international humanitarian law and the politicisation of humanitarian aid were addressed. Moreover, securitization theory was used in order to explain how humanitarian actors securitize the targeting through language. The results show that consequences of the illegal targeting for humanitarian organisations are limited access to the field as well as the closing of facilities and withdrawal of staff due to security issues. For the Yemeni population consequences are a limited access to healthcare as well as a loss of trust in the safety of medical facilities and therefore they often take the decision to not seek medical care. The analysis shows that humanitarian actors present the illegal targeting as a threat to the survival of beneficiaries and connect this to their own organisational survival and through that securitize the illegal targeting.

Leaving the Paris Climate Agreement – Historical Setback or No Impact? : A Comparative Framing Analysis of U.S. and German Newspaper Coverage

Huttel, Lena Maria January 2019 (has links)
Donald Trump’s announcement on June 1st, 2017, to withdraw the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement generated widespread news coverage. In this qualitative framing study, a selection of articles published on that topic in the German Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and the American New York Times are analyzed with respect to generic news frames, issue-specific frames, actor-statements, and images. The most frequently used news frames were economic consequences, conflict, and responsibility. The morality frame appeared only twice, whereas the human interest frame was not evident in the verbal text at all, but occurred in one image. Two issue-specific frames emerged, the setback frame, evident in the majority of articles, cast Trump’s decision as a momentous setback for the U.S. and the global fight against climate change. The contradictory no impact frame implied that the Paris Agreement has many problems as is, and the U.S. withdrawal will have no impact on the state of the climate. The images accompanying the articles were shown to support the verbal issue-specific framing of the articles, whereas no clear relation could be found connecting certain types of actor-statements with the presence of a certain frame.

A Content Analysis of the Features of Online Discourse on Japanese Twitter

Kuusisto, Rita January 2019 (has links)
This research was conducted in order to study and analyze the online discourse in Japanese. It is a Twitter-specific study on the Japanese linguistic features of computer-mediated communication. A total of 887 tweets from 30 Japanese celebrities between ages 19-31 were divided by age, gender, degree of formality and genre, and a content analysis was conducted on them to compare the use of orthographic and lexical features by using previous studies by Nishimura (2003) and Miyake (2007) as a framework. The results show that Twitter was most commonly used for replies to other Twitter users, to maintain social media presence and for self-promotion. Tweets were most commonly sent via iPhone, written in informal style. The findings also offer further proof on how strongly the graphic signs are part of online communication, and confirm that many technology-inspired slang words and abbreviations are created for different media platforms.

Um estudo sobre as motivações inconscientes presentes na escolha profissional do estudante de psicologia / A study on the existing unconscious motivations in the professional choice of psychology undergraduate students.

Abreu Filho, Antonio Geraldo de 15 April 2005 (has links)
This dissertation aims at studying the existing unconscious motivations in the professional choice of a psychology career of first and second year undergraduate students, trying to understand the relation between latent, unconsciousness and manifest, consciousness content of this choice from the theoretical framework of Melanie Klein. The research was carried out through two investigation tools: Picture 1 of TAT (Thematic Apperception Test), with the objective of comprehending the content of the answers at an unconscious level, through the projection mechanism, and the use of the Semi-directed Interview, which would have the student act more naturally. This would allow us to observe the students posture, reactions and the content of his/her answers at a conscious level. We have found that the student had varied perceptions in relation to Picture 1 stimulus and they presented several reparation combinations at an unconscious and conscious level. Based on the reparation suggested by Bohoslavsky, two other types of reparation were included for us: authentic/manic and manic/authentic, by means of clinical study, due to the functioning of mental dynamics, in which we have examined the elements mentioned in the stories, the content where these stories took place, how the account was given and the sort of suggestion offered. Through the analysis of the answers, we have verified that what was displayed at a conscious level regarding the psychologist career choice not always coincide with the unconscious level. This reveals the importance of taking the question of the unconscious content existing in that choice into consideration.

Validation of the Adams Influence Model (AIM)

Adams, Jeffrey Matthew January 2008 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Dorothy A. Jones / Understanding Chief Nurse Executive (CNE) influence is essential for the discipline of nursing. There are approximately 5000 CNEs in the United States, all are tasked with being the primary identifiable leader representing organizations in which they are employed and the nursing profession of which they are a part. In this capacity, the CNE is the gatekeeper for the advancement of the majority of the 2.4 million nurses practicing in the U.S. Literature suggests that early CNEs lacked influence and often were not recognized members of organizational executive teams. Today, after two decades of struggle, CNEs are identified as essential executive team members. However, they still self identify as being less influential than their C-suite counterparts, leaving us to question, "Having gotten to the table, now what?" This study was designed as an initial step toward answering this question through Validation of the Adams Influence Model (AIM). The AIM is a framework that can be used to understand the influence of the CNE in the acute care setting. The study exposed the AIM to a qualitative data set collected as part of an academic medical center's Survey of the Professional Practice Environment. Directed content analysis was used to categorize survey responses and identify influence content toward validation and refinement of the AIM's operational definitions. Study results validated AIM influence factors and influence attributes with some refinement. In addition to development of a refined AIM, study findings also helped identify continued research opportunities. These research potentials included the exploration of; influence instrument development, the influence process, differences between influence and power, and the relationship between CNE influence, practice/ work environments and patient outcomes. As a discipline, nursing must continue to understand the influence of the CNE. These individuals are leading the profession, at what pace and in what direction cannot be left to chance. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2008. / Submitted to: Boston College. Can television promote a more progressive definition of rape and help delegitimize it?: Rape in Law and Order: Special Victims Unit

Ramos Hernández, Isabel January 2016 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Lynda Lytle Holmstrom / Rape is a socially constructed behavior used in patriarchal societies to devalue women and ensure male supremacy. Being socially constructed means that the definition of rape can change. This thesis addresses the question of whether an established institution—television—can promote a more progressive definition of rape and help delegitimize it. It uses a feminist content analysis to examine the main themes on 14 episodes of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit (SVU) aired from 2012-2015. It is qualitative and inductive in nature, approached from a grounded theory perspective. The data demonstrate that SVU does, to some extent, present a more progressive view of rape instead of perpetuating the common stereotypes of rape. Essentially, SVU represents a new variety of definitions of rape that are reflective of white, privileged, heterosexual and young women's experiences in the United States. Race, class, sexual orientation and identity are barely taken into account even though many social inequalities based on them characterize American life. / Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2016. / Submitted to: Boston College. College of Arts and Sciences. / Discipline: Departmental Honors. / Discipline: Sociology.
