Settling Time Measurement Techniques Achieving High Precision at High Speeds

Settling time is very important for data acquisition systems because it is the primary factor that defines the data rate for a given error level. Therefore settling time measurement is a crucial test. The goal of the project was to design, test and compare different measurement techniques. Three methods were tested to the accuracies of 0.1% and 0.01%. Also simulations were conducted to explain the parameters that affect the settling behavior. Additionally bench measurements were correlated to simulation results. This report is intended as a guide for settling time measurements.

The data analysis was based in Tall and Vinner theory about image and definition concepts constituted in the formation of the student scientific thought. It was analyzed the knowledge of eight students of the Mathematics course, who study at Universidade do Estado do Pará, enrolled in the discipline Calculo I. The data, obtained by the application of a questionary and by carrying out some interventions, were compared with others of similar researches (national and international ones). It was indicated that there were elements compounding image and definition concepts of researched subjects about function concept, which were not coherently related to the formal concept and with some similarity with those of the subjects investigated in the other researches / O presente trabalho apresenta um estudo de caráter diagnóstico, cujo intuito foi investigar conhecimentos de estudantes universitários sobre o conceito de função. A análise dos dados norteou-se pela teoria de Tall e Vinner sobre conceitos imagem e definição constituídos na formação do pensamento científico do estudante. Foram analisados os conhecimentos de oito estudantes do curso de Licenciatura em Matemática de uma Universidade pública do Estado do Pará, que cursavam a disciplina Cálculo I. Os dados foram obtidos pela aplicação de um questionário e realização de intervenções e foram confrontados com os de pesquisas similares (nacionais e internacionais). Houve indicações de que havia elementos compondo os conceitos imagem e definição dos sujeitos pesquisados sobre o conceito de função, não coerentemente relacionados ao formal e, com alguma similaridade com os dos sujeitos investigados nas outras pesquisas

No. of bitstreams: 1 Felipe Gonçalves Fernandes.pdf: 1310151 bytes, checksum: 8e079d2206f6e0214dad7e675e4bc8b9 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-02-15 / The Brazilian State is governed by a democratic Constitution that enshrines several principles, which are spread through the Legal System and extend to all the branches of the Law, including administrative law, and as a consequence reach disciplinary law, a sub-division of the matter that will be specifically approached in this study. Among said long-standing principles is the principle of legal security, which, among other aspects, ensures citizens a minimum foreseeability when it comes to government conducts. Nevertheless, over history one has accepted (including a significant portion of legal scholars to date) that the formal legal definition of punishable conducts under the disciplinary law (a sub-system that provides for the sanctioning of civil servants) were to be distinct from that applied to criminal law, where one not only recognizes but also requires a clearly delineated legal concept as a means to afford citizens an individual guarantee, in order that the conduct defined as an offense in such system be necessarily described by the law in a clear and accurate manner, in that no generic or vague concepts be accepted. Accordingly, in this study one will analyze the requirements for enforcement of administrative sanctions, with a special focus on disciplinary sanctions, as opposed to the system of guarantees afforded to civil servants by the Brazilian Constitution of 1988 and the grounds underlying it. The analysis will be made from a historical and dogmatic study of the theories that have influenced (and that still influence, to a certain extent) the interference exercised by the Public Administration in those who engage in special relationships of power with it. Therefore, one shall scrutinize the issues concerning the definition of generic punishable conducts under the disciplinary law, historically justified by the so-called special relationships of subjection, in light of the guarantees established in our Constitutional State, particularly legal security, democracy and the fundamental right to a proper administration. The analysis will look into the need for an objective perception of punishable conducts, if not through legislative amendment (a task we are not undertaking here), then through the organization of the chaotic whole of legal rules, by setting out hermeneutical guidelines that will function as limits to public authorities and will thus contribute to an analysis of the matter that is more compatible with the values found in the Federal Constitution / O Estado Brasileiro vige sob a égide de uma Constituição democrática que consagra diversos princípios, os quais se irradiam pelo Ordenamento Jurídico para avançar sobre todas as áreas do Direito, inclusive sobre o direito administrativo, de maneira que também toca o direito disciplinar, sub-ramo daquela matéria que será especialmente tratado nesta pesquisa. Dentre os consagrados princípios, se encontra o princípio da segurança jurídica, o qual, além de outras facetas, garante aos administrados um mínimo de previsibilidade em relação às condutas estatais. Não obstante, foi aceito historicamente (hipótese admitida por parcela significativa da doutrina até os presentes dias) que a tipificação formal de condutas no direito disciplinar (subsistema que cuida do sancionamento de servidores públicos) seria distinta daquela estabelecida para o direito penal, onde não só se reconhece como se exige uma tipicidade fechada como garantia individual dos cidadãos, de modo a se fazer imprescindível nesse sistema que a conduta descritiva do delito seja posta de maneira clara e precisa no texto legal, de sorte que não são admitidos, como regra, conceitos genéricos ou indeterminados na descrição do tipo. Diante isso, analisamos na presente pesquisa os pressupostos para a aplicação das sanções administrativas, com ênfase nas sanções disciplinares, contrapondo-as ao regime de garantias dos servidores fixado pela Constituição da República de 1988 e os fundamentos que o justificam. Referida análise se deu a partir de estudo histórico e dogmático das teorias que influenciaram (e continuam a influenciar em determinada medida) a interferência da Administração Pública sobre aqueles que estabelecem com ela vínculos especiais de poder. Sendo assim, problematizamos o estabelecimento de tipos punitivos abertos no direito disciplinar, justificados historicamente pelas chamadas relações especiais de sujeição, à luz das garantias estabelecidas em nosso Estado Constitucional, especialmente a segurança jurídica, a democracia e o direito fundamental a uma boa administração. Essa análise incita a reflexão sobre a necessidade de objetivação dos tipos disciplinares, se não por meio de alterações legislativas (tarefa a que não nos propomos), pela ordenação do todo caótico representado pelas regras jurídicas por meio do estabelecimento de diretrizes hermenêuticas que representarão limites ao hierarca e se prestarão a contribuir para uma análise mais consentânea do tema com os valores da Constituição Federal

The suppressed goddess of Beowulf : A feminist reading of Grendel’s mother as a representation of Norse goddess Gefion in a changing world order

The aim of this study has been to investigate in feminist terms whether or not the character Grendel’s mother symbolizes early matrilineal tribes in the form of the Norse goddess Gefion, also claimed to be the Earth goddess. The claim has been brought forward in an article by Frank Battaglia on the grounds that the chthonic deity is mentioned on several occasions in Beowulf. However, Grendel’s mother’s possible connection to the goddess has not been treated extensively in a feminist context, despite the apparent link between feminism and matrilineal tribes in a patriarchal hierarchy. The modern translations of her character as a monster stand in stark contrast to the original manuscript where she is depicted as an aglӕcwif, “female warrior”. The subject has given rise to a number of feminist researches on the theme of the so called “woman-as-monster” stereotype. These argue that Grendel’s mother has fallen victim to enforced marginalization due to etymological faults as well as sexist stereotypes in Anglo-Saxon literary culture. On the background of Moi’s definition of a woman and Kristeva’s concept of the abject, results demonstrate that Grendel’s mother may very well symbolize the female Other in a new social order, embodied or represented as the Earth goddess.

L’objectif de ce travail est de montrer — à partir d’un corpus d’entretiens télévisés filmés à deux périodes différentes, 1967-1972 et 2007-2012 — comment se manifestent, en français parlé, les phénomènes de redondance prédicative, c’est-à-dire de reprise du sens d’une prédication (l’énoncé-source) par une autre prédication (l’énoncé reformulé). Le cadre théorique choisi pour mener à bien cette recherche est celui du Lexique-Grammaire élaboré par Maurice Gross et son équipe du LADL, ainsi que la théorie de la reformulation élaborée par Claire Martinot à partir de 1994. Cette reprise, qui suppose la préservation du sens d’origine, peut être strictement littérale (répétition), porter sur des processus uniquement syntaxiques(transformation), consister en une clarification du sens de l’énoncé-source (paraphrase définitoire) ou instaurer une équivalence de sens sans fondement syntaxique (paraphrases sémantiques sensibles ou non à l’influence du contexte). L’hypothèse de départ de ce travail est que mettre en relation milieux sociaux, époques d’enregistrement et types de reformulation doit révéler quels paramètres expliquent le mieux l’usage préférentiel de tel ou tel type de redondance par telle ou telle catégorie de locuteurs. / The purpose of this research project is to show, from a corpus of televised interviews shot in two different periods, 1967-1972 and 2007-2012, how predicative redundancy phenomena occur in spoken French, that is, how a source phrase can be taken over by another phrase. The theoretical frame adopted to lead this research is the Lexicon-Grammar developed by Maurice Gross and his LADL team, as well as the reformulation theory Claire Martinot has been developing since 1994. This rewording, which assumes the preservation of the semantic data of the original phrase, may be strictly literal (repetition), concern only syntactic processes (transformation), consist of a clarification of the meaning of the source phrase (in that case, a form of definition) or institute a semantic equivalence between the phrases without any syntactic corollation, this last type of redundancy proving to be either context-free or context-sensitive. The initial hypothesis of this research project is that making connections between social environments, dates of recording, and types of rewording must be possible and must reveal explanations about the preferential use of specific types of redundancy by specific categories of speakers.

However, unlike the standard proofs of incompleteness, the proof of TDR, by virtue of restricted signature, uses essentially the power of second-order logic.

Cette recherche vise à étudier la problématique d’harmonisation des concepts, des termes et des objets en Union européenne élargie et dans les pays arabes. Elle se focalise sur trois domaines : économie, administration et finance. Avec 23 langues officielles et 27 pays, en attendant peut-être un autre élargissement dans le futur, l’Europe a besoin d’harmoniser les concepts afin de surpasser les mauvaises interprétations et les compréhensions faussées. Chaque pays a son système administratif et économique qui lui est propre, qui convient à sa société et à sa culture ; et c’est souvent là que les problèmes de compréhension des concepts surgissent.Les pays arabes longtemps focalisés sur l’arabisation des emprunts sont également confrontés à ce problème, sans oublier la zone euro-méditerranée, appelée aujourd’hui Union pour la méditerranée (UPM). C’est donc d’une recherche focalisée sur l’étude des concepts et des définitions dans des domaines bien déterminés dont il s’agit dans notre thèse. Nous nous sommes appuyés sur les normes ISO en matière de terminologie pour essayer d’apporter des réponses sur la question d’harmonisation des concepts et des termes dans l’Union européenne et dans les pays arabes. / This research aims to study the problem of harmonization of concepts, terms and objects in the enlarged European Union and the Arab countries. It focuses on three subject fields: economy, finance and administration.With 23 official languages and 27 countries pending a further enlargement in thefuture, Europe needs to harmonize the concepts to surpass the misinterpretations and distorted understandings. Every country has its administrative and economic systemon its own and that suits his society and its culture, and it is often, in this case ,that the understanding of the concepts problems arises.The Arab countries which focused on the Arabization of borrowings also face this problem, without forgetting the Euro- Mediterranean zone, today called Union for the Mediterranean (UPM).It is therefore a research focused on the study of the concepts and terms in the subject fields well determined. We have relied on ISO standards of terminology to help us tofind solutions to the harmonization problem of harmonization of concepts, terms in the enlarged European Union and the Arab countries.

Japanese Vocabulary Learning Through an Interactive Video Platform: Comparative Effects of L1 Versus L2 Definitions and Kana Versus Kanji Presentation

Advances in digital technology have recently allowed for richer text annotation in combination with authentic second language video media. As a result, many educational researchers are focusing increased attention on the effect this application of technology can have on second language acquisition. This study examines the comparative effectiveness of target vocabulary treatments with either native language (L1) definitions or target language (L2) definitions when target vocabulary is presented in either kana or kanji as a part of the subtitles of an L2 film based on participant performance on vocabulary assessments. This study also examines the participants' perceived levels of helpfulness of the varying word treatments. The results of the study suggest that providing annotations for target words in the L2 increases learning of that word more than L1 annotations for intermediate learners of Japanese. On the other hand, learners rated access to definitions in L1 as more helpful than L2 definitions, and they expressed their preference for understanding the story more than learning the target vocabulary.
