The sacred and profane symbolism of space in classical Greek architecture: the temple complex of Apollo at Delphi and the Athenian Acropolis

Under consideration are the temple layouts at Delphi and the Athenian Acropolis which were shaped in completely different ways. What they have in common, however, is that both represent an architecture on two hierarchic levels: the upper or sacred level as symbolised by the eternal principle expressed in both elevated Doric temples, which are placed in dramatic juxtaposition with features in their natural settings (earth, horizon, sky); and the lower, human level which is represented by the auxiliary buildings of the approach areas of these temple complexes. The latter buildings are smaller than the main temples and are marked by complexity and ambiguity in that they are imperfect, of varied design and not oriented to a geometric axis, which is in complete contrast to the serenity of the fully articulated superior Doric order exemplified by the Temple of Apollo at Delphi and the Parthenon on the Athenian Acropolis. In both cases the focus will be on the perceptual totality of the group designs.

Disseminating Knowledge with Dance

The Delphi method was used to investigate the use of dance and movement in knowledge dissemination by systematically accessing and synthesizing the knowledge of researchers and dancers who have used this particular artistic method. The expert panel included three researchers (two also identifying as dancers) who had used dance as a tool to disseminate research findings in formal research. Two rounds of online Delphi questionnaires were used to generate data. The study’s findings included several categories of consensus reached amongst participants: (a) using dance for the purposes of knowledge dissemination is complex, time-consuming, and requires expertise, (b) dance is a useful and valid means for disseminating research findings both in qualitative and quantitative projects, (c) movement and dance are common to all humans, provide a common base or means for interaction, and provide a legitimate way of knowing, expressing knowledge and concepts either differently or sometimes better than language, (d) dance is not appropriate to use in all research projects and there is no singular procedure, (e) dance evokes emotional, visceral, and embodied responses that cannot be predicted, and (f) researchers ethical care and responsibility exceeds typical considerations and extends to others members such as the dancers and audience members. Differences of opinion arose about researchers’ ethical responsibilities associated with level of care for audience members when using dance as a knowledge dissemination strategy. The current study’s findings extend knowledge and understanding about the use of dance in research dissemination, and have implications for future research and research practice.

Where the quality is concerned we find out a new method like an educational falsification . What does it mean ? There is a lack of scientific research about the phenomenon ‘s content, and the influence to society. Object. The phenomenon of educational falsification . Aim. To analyse the concept and situation of educational falsification . Goals. To investigate educational documents and scientific literature sources, reveal the concept and teachers ‘outlook to educational falsification. Methodology .With the intention of gathering new educational data there is a provision that old problems become irrelevant meanwhile the new attitude is of greater importance. The research was conducted in two stages. The first stage included an expert survey and was fulfilled in December, 2005/ February,2006. The group was made of the following experts : educationists, representatives from educational department, high schools and the Seimas. The competence is the main criteria. The Freight on Transit Delphi Study was conducted to explore the concept of freight on transit – using public transit vehicles and infrastructure for transporting things other than people. Three rounds of web based surveys were conducted with a panel of 34 transportation experts to explore the main issues related to freight and transit integration and to build and evaluate potential freight on transit operations. Survey results were consistent with previous investigations and suggest that organizational disputes are a larger barrier to implementation than technical challenges. Traditional Delphi questions were used to determine the most important positive impacts, negative impacts, and challenges of moving freight on transit networks while survey responses combined with scenario building techniques were used to build and evaluate five potential freight on transit operating strategies using public transit networks in the GTHA.

Perceptions of sports managers and academics of the importance of competencies, and their relationship with sports management curriculum in Taiwan

This thesis comprises three studies that empirically evaluate the perceptions of sports managers and academics of the importance of competencies for sports managers in Taiwan. First, a systematic review technique is conducted to review the literature on competency-based studies in sports management and this is followed by three empirical studies. Study I is designed to develop an appropriate research instrument for the evaluation of the perceptions of the importance of competencies to the successful conducting of a sports manager's job in Taiwan. Study II analyzes the underlying features in these competencies and provides a comparison of the perceptions of the two populations. Study III identifies and evaluates the process of curriculum construction in three leading academic institutions and its relationship to competency-based education. The thesis concludes that although there are many globaUshared phenomena in the development of sports management, the perceptions of important competencies of sports managers may vary in different local contexts and thus locally based analysis is necessary to identify culturally specific features.

Research Doctorate - Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / Identification of the victims of a mass fatality incident is considered a basic human right.Forensic odontology frequently makes a significant contribution to the identification process following major disasters, and is considered a primary identifier in the Interpol Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) Guidelines. Many authors have indicated that to achieve identification with dignity and respect requires practical guidelines and standard operating procedures. No internationally accepted guidelines currently exist for the practice of forensic odontology in DVI situations. This report documents the development of a comprehensive practice guide for use by Australian forensic odontologists in a mass fatality incident. To understand the value of this document in a professional context the project also looked at the development and application of forensic odontology in multiple fatality incidents in Australia. This evolution has seen forensic odontology grow from a spasmodically used ad-hoc service to the consistent professional service delivered by practitioners today. The research question addressed in this project was “Is the Delphi technique is an appropriate tool to assist the Australian Society of Forensic Odontology to develop a set of guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures for Disaster Victim Identification practices”? Thirty one members of the Australian Society of Forensic Odontology and four members of various Australian police services and the private disaster management sector participated in the project. The participants set the level of consensus against which they wished to work and took 4 rounds to reach agreement on the contents of the document. The resultant document, the “Disaster Victim Identification Forensic Odontology Guide” is comprehensive in coverage, meets many of the criteria established to define quality and places the Australian Society of Forensic Odontology at the vanguard of professionalism in the forensic odontology community, and confirms the Delphi technique was an appropriate tool to assist in the development of a set of guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures for Disaster Victim Identification practices.
