The Experience of Health Care Providers Who Care for the Refugee PopulationMacDonald, Ashley Patricia 01 January 2016 (has links)
Refugees resettling in the United States face many challenges; especially within the health care setting. The purpose of this research was to add to the increasing body of knowledge about improving health care for the refugee population through investigating providers' lived experience caring for them. This study utilized qualitative research methods with a descriptive phenomenological approach. Five healthcare providers, one Nurse Practitioner, three Pediatricians and one Family Medicine Attending, were interviewed face to face through semi-structured interviews, utilizing twelve questions about their lived experience caring for the refugee population. The data from the five participants interviewed revealed three themes that described their experience: Facing Challenges; Experiencing Satisfaction; and Reframing the System. Although each provider found satisfaction within his or her current positions, there is a critical need for improved allocation of resources for housing, social support, and increased funding to help support refugee families that arrive in the United States.

Background: Mental illness is a public health problem in Sweden as well as in other countries around the world. This has not only individual consequences, but also consequences for the community which puts pressure on the mental health care and their staff. Research reports that patients’ experiences from mental health care are both positive and negative. Studies also indicate the value of patients’ experiences for further improvement of mental health care. The aim of this study was to gather knowledge about psychiatric inpatients experiences regarding their meeting with the nurses. Method: A literature review that included studies with qualitative method was analyzed using content analysis. Results: Six categories were identified which consisted of: Patient-nurse relationship, communication, information, the desire to be seen as an individual, control and the lack of nurses and their time. Conclusion: Patients described that the meeting with nurses was important for their satisfaction with mental health care. Patients described both positive and negative experiences in meeting with nurses. However, the majority of the experiences were described as negative.

However, internal and external job markets are increasingly characterized by high mobility of experienced professionals, who have extensive social networks rooted in their past collaborations and shared work experiences. Organizations rely more frequently on project teams and project-based organizing to perform interdependent tasks, so employees transition more often across project teams - and firms - in their boundary-less careers. These changes call for a better understanding of whether the reactivation of past social ties is likely to help or hinder the job performance of new employees, especially those engaged in highly interdependent tasks. The object of this study is to theorize and empirically test the mechanisms by which the reactivation of a particular social tie - shared work experience - may impact new members' performance. Thesis advisor: David M. Rasmussen* / Thesis advisor: Oliva Blanchette / The French philosopher Gabriel Marcel (1889-1973) was deeply influenced by the classical tradition of American philosophy. Marcel's first essays focused upon the philosophy of Josiah Royce (1855-1916). Royce impressed Marcel due to his ability to engage in bold, imaginative construction and yet remain "faithful to the empirical tradition, which he deepened and enriched...." Marcel was also deeply influenced by William Ernest Hocking's (1873-1966) major work, The Meaning of God in Human Experience which, for Marcel, not only reaffirmed the religious dimension of human experience but also served as "an advance in the direction of that metaphysical realism toward which I resolutely tended." Lastly, Marcel conducted a sustained personal and philosophical relationship with Henry G. Bugbee Jr. (1915-1999) of the University of Montana. Marcel first met Bugbee at Harvard University while delivering the William James Lectures in 1961. Willard Van Orman Quine described Bugbee as "the ultimate exemplar of the examined life" and Calvin Schrag described him as "one of the more marginalized philosophers in America." Part I consists of a comprehensive examination of Marcel's philosophy, focusing upon the manner in which his thought exhibits a strong sense of "ontological continuity" - establishing a fundamental relationship between human being and the ontological. According to Marcel "Finite thought is continually attracted by a beyond, by Another, which eternally escapes it." Part I will be followed by three sections (Parts II-IV) devoted to the relationship between Marcel and the thought of Royce, Hocking, and Bugbee respectively. The relationship between Marcel and these philosophers is based largely upon their mutual critique of abstract thinking and a shared belief in the existence of a decisive connection between human being and Being. The thesis will conclude with Part V, entitled "The Religious Dimension of Experience," which depicts the manner in which a select cadre of American philosophers has been successful in drawing out the philosophical implications of Marcel's project. Thank you. / Quality management has become a key competitive factor (Garvin, 1988). Product design quality requires incorporating the wants and needs of the customer base into new product development, and product conformance quality relies upon identifying and resolving flaws found in the products. Collecting this feedback requires that the boundary between the customer and the firm be spanned, and applying the feedback requires that it be communicated to the functional group that can effect product improvement. Through its constant interaction with customers, the customer support group is well positioned to sense this customer feedback and communicate it to the product development group.
This dissertation examined the strategic role of the customer support organization within software companies as a quality assurance agent. While traditionally viewed as a rectifier of external quality failures, the research model proposed that customer support could also serve appraisal and preventive quality assurance roles through its boundary spanning activities. A small sample, comparative case study tested hypotheses about customer support's boundary spanning and provided for grounded theory building.
The research revealed three primary findings. First, service delivery designs that included higher levels of customer contact allowed the service agents to sense a broader range of customer issues. Second, product quality increased when the customer data were collected in a detailed format structured to meet the practices of the development group. Third, product quality also increased when the customer support group had more involvement in product management decisions throughout the product development cycle. Through grounded theory-building, the research identified contextual factors that fostered a preventative quality assurance role for customer support. / 2031-01-01

Experiences of families of children with autism spectrum disorder visiting a science museumBoris, Allison January 2015 (has links)
Little is known about the experience of families of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in community settings. The purpose of this research is to learn about the family experience when visiting a science museum, focusing on the motivations of the family, environmental features of the museum, strategies used by family members, and definitions of a successful visit to the museum. Data were collected through semistructured interviews and observations of four families that included a child with ASD.
The families in this study appear to want the same community experiences for their children as families with typically developing children. Both the motivations for the visit and features of the environment appeared to influence the family’s approach and
strategies they employed for a successful visit. Strategies included those completed before the visit (visitor planning strategies), as well as during the visit (strategies at the museum). The strategies enabled families to enjoy and experience success within the
museum environment. The information learned in this study may help families with a child with ASD prepare for and use features of the museum to enjoy successful museum visits. Recommendations are provided for museums seeking to create inclusive
opportunities for all families.
