Mostly known under the pseudonym Jean de La Hire, the French writer, editor and politician Adolphe d’Espie (1878-1956) might not be on many people’s minds nowadays. Yet, his works were very popular in his time, delighting a vast audience including young Jean-Paul Sartre, who names him as one of his favorite authors. And his baffling itinerary raises many questions. Beginning his literary career as a very elitist novelist, young d’Espie befriends figures such as Pierre Louÿs, José-Maria de Heredia, Colette and Willy, and dreams to become the new Balzac. He still ended up owing his fame to popular literature. His prolific production in the field covers many genre: romance novel, crime novel, adventure novels, and even science fiction. The paths he followed in politics puzzle as well. A long standing supporter of the “radical” movement, and elected mayor under this label, d’Espie became editor in chief of a political review sponsored by future Nobel Peace Prize-winning Léon Bourgeois and Ferdinand Buisson. In 1940, d’Espie however sides with the German occupying forces. He takes the helm of a publishing house confiscated to Jewish owners, and writes and publishes propaganda in favor of the Nazis. Ambition and opportunism seem in both cases the reason accounting for these flip-flops – d’Espie always going for the quickest way to success, disregarding both his ideals and a posterity that will not be able to forgive his mistakes.

The aim of this Doctoral Thesis has been the study of the amorous conceptions which are present in the spanish novel of the Restoration period (taking Benito Pérez Galdós works as a point of reference), especially regarding an idealistic point of view, and considering the following two aspects:1.The importance of amorous speech for the structural and thematic constitution of these works, since it is an essential component in the sentimental, moral, and intellectual configuration of their protagonists.2.The underlying ideologies which can be discovered through the exegesis and the analysis of the relevant texts in their relation to amorous conceptions of the authors of that time. We have focused on the influence of the most important schools of thought at the end of the XIX th. century (Idealism, Positivism, Pragmatism and Spirituality), and on their reflection and development in the Spanish novel in the Restoration period.

Narrating alternative histories : an exploration of Jamal Mahjoub's The carrier and Amitav Ghosh's In an antique landEberhard, Nicole Joanne 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)-- Stellenbosch University, 2014.
Jamal Mahjoub se The Carrier (1998) en Amitav Ghosh se In an Antique Land (1992).
Hierdie tesis sal uit Edward Said se
verbindingspunte in tyd.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis interrogates the relationship between the past and the present, as represented in
Jamal Mahjoub's The Carrier (1998) and Amitav Ghosh's In an Antique Land (1992). These
texts re-imagine history in order to think a different future. They narrate alternative histories
and in the process critique Western historiography and its representation of the East and
South. This thesis will draw on Edward Said’s Orientalism (1978) as a way of
conceptualising dominant Western attitudes towards the East, as well as the South,
represented by Africa, as the liminal characters in Mahjoub and Ghosh's texts move across
the Indian Ocean and Mediterranean worlds. Mahjoub and Ghosh both fracture their
narratives into a historical and a contemporary thread, interweaving these fragments in order
to comment on the dynamic relationship between the past and the present. This relationship
will be conceptualised drawing on Walter Benjamin's notion of a constellation connecting
points in time. The mapping of connection is enabled by the authors’ exploration of a history
of connection between diverse people in these regions. The alternative histories proposed
reveal precolonial Mediterranean and Indian Ocean trading networks built on exchange,
resulting in cosmopolitan societies emphasising connection rather than geopolitical binaries.
Conversations across differences — of culture, religion, and schools of thought — drive these
connections in the historical plotlines. By juxtaposing this past world with a more hostile
twentieth century world, Mahjoub and Ghosh seek to question whether reconceptualising the
past enables the re-imagining of the present and future, in terms of how people are able to
connect across boundaries of difference.
