Corporate communications : a critical comparative study of the language of communication in the Zimbabwean banking sector

Mushore, Washington 04 1900 (has links)
The aim of this study was to critically analyse the visual and verbal language used on printed adverts by some selected banks in Zimbabwe. A semiotic theory was used to analyse the printed adverts. The study revealed that all the banks use stereotyped language in communicating their messages to potential customers. Some audiences identified with this stereotyped languages, though others were also critical of stereotyped adverts. This paradox is dependent on the uneven levels of social consciousness of the audiences. The study argues that communication between banks and the potential customers is a product of negotiation of meaning at the point of reception of the printed adverts. The study then recommended the use of gender, race and class neutral language in order to enhance the effectiveness of advertisements. Future research into the study of the language of advertisement should focus on the problem of copyright infringement in advertising. / African Languages / M.A. (African languages)

Hudba jako znak / Music As A Sign

JAROLÍMOVÁ, Jana January 2013 (has links)
The thesis is interested in the problem of musical sign. In which ways can we speak about musical sign and which elements of musical material can become signs? These are the basic questions which we are interested in. This thesis is divided into three parts. The first part attends to the common theory of sign. The historical survey with the main ideas of philosophers and thinkers will be helpful to find out basic terms and problems of semiotics. In the second part of thesis we look at the historical reflection of musical sign in order to find out in which way it was treated with music and musical sign in each historical period of European music. In the third part we focus on musical semiotics, but we will consider some problems of musical aesthetics and musical psychology, too. In the end we make recapitulation of answers to the aforesaid questions.

Tuhkunen, Simon January 2017 (has links)

Les Avatars et les métaphores de la figure humaine dans les spectacles contemporains de la marionnette / Avatars and metaphors of the form in contemporary works of puppetry

Bonnetier, Stanka 10 December 2011 (has links)
This thesis studies the problematics of avatars and metaphors of the human form and its manifoldstage representations; it questions contemporary ‘creation’ in the field of puppetry. The practice of puppetryand the place bestowed on the human form in staging devices are the starting point of the study. Located at theconvergence of animated figures and of computer graphics, contemporary staging devices that stem from newtechniques of sound and video have allowed us to surpass the traditional framework of the puppet. Halfwaybetween doll and refined figure, the puppet goes beyond its outline and opens the path towards new stagerepresentations; shadows and virtual doubles, CGI avatars, which can all be transformed and developed in realtime. All its representations beg the question of incarnation. Thus the face of the avatar is presented as apossible extension of the puppet. Technological tools allow new ways of devising and developing the face. Theyoffer infinite possibilities to divide the face, to multiply and replicate it. In this repetitive gesture, the facetends gradually to be effaced of its outlines. Far from the anthropomorphic figure, it symbolises here an ideamost often, a concept, a word that underscores the essence of the material and the visual arrangement of objectsand matter. As for the potential splitting of the performer achieved thanks to new technology in video andsound, the living boy in flesh and blood multiples as shadows, reflections and virtual doubles. The latterbecome a sign, an icon of our presence. Spatial and corporeal duplication of their iconic presence makes thenumerous subterfuges involved in a staging device sparkle. Because this new figure, built from simulatedreality games and digital lures, gradually erases the traditional contours of the human form by blurring thepaths to any tangible identification. These new forms are presented as staggered images and are a realinvitation to rethinking absence and presence, appearance and disappearance. The face/form is exposed tomultiple interpretations and offers a deferred vision by questioning the place of the human being in our society. Staging devices that shelter these forms become a true iconostasis for their demonstration. The face –the space belonging to the fiction of the gaze – incessantly makes and breaks its outlines by throwing up itsimage to those who watch him. The viewer is invited to undergo an ocular experience by transforming it into atrue act of seeing.

XVIe - XXIe siècles / MAGNUM SIGNUM MEXICANUM - "Revelations" around the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe. 16th - 21st centuries

Augier de Moussac, Nathalie 15 November 2017 (has links)
The miraculous image of the Mexican Virgin of Guadalupe is much more than a religious icon : It is a national symbol and a political object which has been at the heart of constant rivalities between the civil authorities and the Church since her "apparition" in the XVIth century. Without neglecting the intimate relationship most Mexicans have developed with her, we have been focusing on this aspect, too often forgotten from most scholar studies on the matter.

These fields encircle painting, sculpture and, in addition, furniture and special pieces designed for the indoor spaces. More specifically, this essay also builts and reports its reflections based on the contemporary christian artwork and architectural spaces, produced and projected by artist and vernacular architect Claudio Pastro. The analysis in this essay approaches Pastro's biography through his unique process of working and criating, as a painter, pictorial artist, architect and sacred art expert. The second chapter explores Pastro's conceptions between sacred art and religious art, which are indeed different: each conception is clearly refeared, explained, discussed, compared to the other ones, and looked over through the eyes of Mircea Eliade's and Rudolf Otto's fenomenology. Still in the field of the Teology of the Art, the thinking of Romano Guardini about the sacred and the religious is also shown. In the third chapter we have a timeline brief of the history of art and sacred architecture, the bases of Pastro's work; then, a comparative study between his conception about the modern project related to the architecture and the vanguard arts. We also comment some brazilian architects projects, wich he admire and influenced him. Furthermore we comment the II Council of the Vatican and its propositions of liturgical renewal, wich led to the renew of sacred architeture and art, home of Pastro's realm of inspiration and concepts. We end with the analysis and critical reviewing of nine of his chapels and churches already built. In the conclusion, we comment the repercussion of Claudio Pastro's works, and the importance of his figure within the brazilian artistic and architectural panorama, as well as the concerns and limits of his concepts. Alongside with these questions, we leave to open minds some other further questions to be treated, about the relationships between art and religion, and art and the sacred.

The Shades of Styles : A human search for words communicating all aspects of styles.

Hellerslien, Erlend January 2021 (has links)
This research is an investigative attempt on the concept of style´s development to potentially noticing our diverse human history on viewing the aspect of styles, starting (in the part one) by looking into the problem of the development of styles and its characteristic of representation in terms of its messages, realties, semiotics, and human collaboration. Leading towards the human search in seeing style more commonly neutral for a more meaningful dialog. The research shows then (in the part two) the potential to build a Digital Style Dictionary and A Digital Visual Compass: A Human-Centric Guide on The Aspect of Seeing Reality’s that can support identifying aspects of multiple realities (core reality, abstract reality, surreal reality and artificial reality) — where two cases (in the part three) of visual styles get analyzed, discussed, reframed, and presented (Transpace and Swisch). Fundamentally this paper looks to provoke a discussion on what we humans want the point to be in seeing styles. The complexity is as grand as our diversity, but still, this research highlights the hope to respectfully identify the distinctive shades of styles for the sake of a more significant human dialog and inclusion. The research´s grand ambition is knowingly bigger than what it itself can grasp to complete right now (2021) fully. It proposes an idea for the near future to shape a Digital Style Dictionary and a Digital Visual Compass that works for the common human aspect of seeing styles. This research is a first attempt towards shaping the fundamental frame towards a spectrum of the style´s, that we can respectfully continue to articulate for the sake to include better human communication on the aspect of seeing distinctiveness, not that style´s stands in a capital value program between something “high” or “low.” Instead, we can now start to collaborate in shaping and building these potential tools as A Digital Style Dictionary and A Digital Visual Compass in sharing a more human-centric spectrum of styles to push the human evolution of knowledge further.
