Identifying Barriers to Sustainability of Dual Language Immersion Programs in Utah SchoolsRowley, Jennifer Leigh 31 May 2024 (has links) (PDF)
Dual Language Immersion (DLI) educational programming began in Utah in 2008. Within three short years, DLI programs in Utah schools had grown from 5 to 58 programs statewide. Presently, Utah now has over 301 DLI programs, including instruction in Spanish, Chinese, French, Portuguese, Russian, and German. DLI programs have many benefits and have attracted many student families. However, not much research has been done on program planning, implementation, and the sustainability of DLI programs within individual school cultures and climates. This study will examine the satisfaction level of faculty, staff, administrators, and parents at DLI schools (including how supported/understood each of these groups feels if issues arise), how the presence of a DLI program affects a school (e.g. culture, special needs, relationships), and if there are any barriers to sustainability of DLI programs in Utah schools. A survey of perceptions among parents and educators, including administrators, was offered state-wide. Quantitative results were analyzed in aggregate and analyzed according to descriptive statistics. Results were used to inform a better framework for program planning, implementation, and sustainability of DLI programs in Utah schools.

Spelgrafik : Grafikens effekt på immersion / Game graphics : The effects of graphics on immersionBeckman, Svante, Sandberg, Johannes January 2024 (has links)

Adaptiv musik i plattformsspel : En studie om vertikalt arrangerad adaptiv musik i Celeste / Adaptive music in platforming games : A study of vertically arranged adaptive music in CelestePersson, Alexander, Sokolova, Ossia January 2024 (has links)

Attitudes, Opinions, and Beliefs of Teachers Toward Dual Immersion Programs in Utah SchoolsHawks, Amy Lynn 30 May 2024 (has links) (PDF)
Dual language immersion programs have been on the rise in the United States as a proven effective form of bilingual education. As of the 2018–2019 academic year, Utah had 224 dual language immersion (DLI) programs; 113 Spanish, 65 Chinese, 30 French, 13 Portuguese, 2 German and 1 Russian. Roughly 34,000 students were enrolled in one of these programs. The DLI programs in Utah use a 50:50 model, which means half of the students' day is in the partner language model and half is in English. The purpose of my study was to research teachers’ attitudes, opinions, and beliefs within a DLI school environment and understand their experiences of the benefits and challenges on how the DLI program has impacted their career. In order to gain a better understanding of the DLI program and all that it entails regarding teacher attitudes, opinions, and beliefs, a qualitative study, using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA), was conducted. There were 12 participants, three of which were male and nine of which were female. They taught in DLI schools in Spanish, English, German, and Chinese. Findings from the interviews conducted identified six primary themes and seven secondary themes from teachers’ experiences working in a DLI program. The primary themes included cultural awareness, school environment, support, curriculum development, collaboration and training. Teachers wanted more training in order to be more prepared to teach dual immersion. They also needed materials and resources that are readily available to them for the target language being taught so they aren’t wasting their time and money creating resources that should be provided. Teachers felt that collaboration is a struggle because of the different schedules that the dual immersion programs require. These finding are based on how educators experienced the DLI program in their respective schools. Implications and recommendations for implementation of a successful dual immersion program are discussed.

Enhancing Seafood Quality and Safety by Reducing Reliance on Antibiotics: Applying a Novel Antibody in TilapiaGarry, Jordan Nicole 14 June 2018 (has links)
Disease outbreaks have overwhelmed the aquaculture industry as a whole and have been catastrophic for many single operations. To minimize disease outbreaks, efforts are underway to enhance animal health and disease resistance to pathogens without the use of antibiotics.
The overall purpose of this study was to explore a potential prophylactic, a novel antibody diet, for the bacterial pathogen, Aeromonas hydrophila, in tilapia.
The tilapia were on an anti-interleukin-10 antibody diet as a neutralization of interleukin-10 (IL-10), an anti-inflammatory cytokine. The anti-inflammatory function of IL-10 has been shown to allow persistence of gastrointestinal pathogens. Tilapia were fed the novel diet and were challenged via bath immersion or oral gavage with A. hydrophila. Four trials of challenge studies were conducted. Clinical signs of the disease and survival were monitored post-challenge of the bacteria. Out of the 4 trials, one bath immersion trial showed significantly lower survival in the group fed the novel antibody diet (p=0.044) compared to the control fed group, after challenged with A. hydrophila. The other trials tested showed no significant differences in survival between diets. Among the survival percentages collected as a whole, it cannot be determined from in vivo results whether this anti-IL-10 diet is effective in preventing mortality from A. hydrophila in tilapia. Therefore, an in vitro study using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to determine the neutralization capability of anti-IL-10 on IL-10 using tilapia splenocytes. Interferon-γ, a pro-inflammatory cytokine, was quantified in order to find a trend in expression of IL-10 in vitro in various tilapia cell treatments. The protocol for the ELISA study is under development being that the use of this antibody is novel and has never before been done in fish. / Master of Science in Life Sciences / Aquaculture is the fastest growing animal-production sector for food in the world. Health and safety issues are prevalent among aquatic animals during massive growth and production. Disease outbreaks within aquaculture facilities can cause losses worth billions of dollars. Antibiotics are currently in use in aquaculture as a therapeutant for treating disease. However, over time the use of antibiotics has brought up a new set of issues; antibiotic resistant bacteria/genes and transfer of these to the environment and to humans via consumption.
A novel antibody feed, containing an antibody to interleukin-10, with potential as a preventative disease measure was used to study disease development after exposure with a bacterial pathogen. Thus, tilapia were exposed to the bacteria, Aeromonas hydrophila, and signs of disease and survival were monitored to see if the novel antibody feed would prevent disease onset. Further research is necessary on the antibody before confirming effectiveness on disease prevention.

Ion implantation is a major process technology for manufacturing integrated circuits. However, silicon doping by ion implantation for photovoltaics is a relatively recent application, and its growth still faces high costs of integration into solar cell production lines. Plasma-immersion ion implantation (PIII) promises to meet the future industry requirements in terms of costs and productivity. This thesis work has led to the development of processes dedicated to silicon-based solar cell manufacturing using the plasma-immersion ion implanter – PULSION® – designed by IBS. First, we show that PIII enables the realization of various doping profiles for phosphorus-doped emitters which fit the requirements of high-efficiency solar cells. Emitters thus fabricated are chemically, physically and electrically characterized to demonstrate their excellent quality. Those emitters, implanted through plasma immersion and integrated into a low cost solar cell manufacturing line from INES on monocrystalline silicon, enable to raise the conversion efficiency, obtained with conventional POCl3-diffused solar cells, by more than 0.5% absolute to reach efficiencies above 19.3%.Fabrication of p-type boron implanted emitters is also studied in order to improve conversion efficiencies of p-type silicon based solar cells, but also in order to anticipate the technological shift from p-type to n-type silicon material. Thanks to this thesis work, the strength and potential of PIII for photovoltaic applications have been proven and this has convinced IBS to design a PULSION® equipment dedicated to solar cell manufacturing.

An Epic Combo of Theatre and Games : Entertainment and immersion in games designed after epic theatre principlesAlmlöf, Linnea, Jalonen, Matilda January 2019 (has links)
Some scientists claim that there's a connection between entertainment and immersion. The epic theatre wanted to distance the audience but at the same time encourage them to reflect and be entertained. The study intended to examine how entertaining and immersive the participants experienced a game designed after epic theatre principles. After playing such a game, the participants either answered a questionnaire or took part in an interview. In general, they experienced high or mid-high immersion and entertainment. However, there were large differences between different individuals. The experience might have been affected by an interest in the theme or similar games. Immersion and entertainment share some components that seem to make the concepts difficult to separate in practice. There's a value in further research to understand immersion, entertainment and reflection better, and also how these affect each other. This might lead to more critical thinking and knowledge amongst the population.

This dissertation distinguishes as a memorial of an empirical research, that belongs to the research field of theatrical creation processes. This research revolve around the notion of immersion in the contemporary scene. In this work is considered by recent contact with theater plays that makes uses of technology and bets in the experience of sensory flooding the spectators. From this perspective, i develop a research about the procedures that might produce this immersive theatrical experience. For achieving that I divide this work in two modules. The first module, a bibliographical study, that wishes to recognize conceptual tensions about the notion of immersion. Here I recognize the principles of provoking this immersion effect for then applying in the second module of the research. In the second module I devote to the empirical research by the means of arranging a theatrical experiment conducted by the immersion triggers found in the conceptual studies. These were discovered by linking technological devices and elements of theatre language: time, space, presence, real and fictional dimensions and sense manipulation. Having this as premise, I developed the theatrical experiment called “Insônia”. I analyze the creative processes and problematize the discoveries and scenic solutions found along the way.

This thesis aims at presenting and describing the teaching practices related to language comparison in the immersive French-Occitan schools “Calandretas”. Activities focusing on the comparative observation of the functioning of different languages have been widely researched for a number of decades. They are of great interest to applied linguists who consider them as new ways of approaching language teaching, as much of foreign languages, as of the mother tongue or the language of schooling. The implementation of these activities very clearly questions the role and place attributed to languages in the language training of pupils; it addresses the languages of their language biography, of the curriculum or even languages unknown to them. Current trends lean towards disciplinary decompartmentalization and the setting up of links between languages, whether for the purpose of learning a particular target language or the wider perspective of language education. Therefore, I wanted to explore what took place in the very specific context of bilingual education, more specifically in the context of immersive teaching of the regional language. Do the teachers in the Occitan Calandretas schools compare the two languages of schooling (Occitan and French), and / or other languages? If so, how and why? Based on a study of reported and observed practices of teachers of Key Stage 3, our thesis offers to report not only on the way in which the situations of comparative observation of Occitan and French and / or other languages functioning are set up, but also to study the linguistic contents covered by the comparison. Situated at the interface between linguistics and the didactics of multilingualism, this work also seeks, to clarify the place of the comparison of languages in the plural approaches of languages and cultures from the epistemological point of view and to clarify what it means to compare languages.

Hydrostatic and thermal influences on intravascular volume determination during immersion: quantification of the f-cell ratioGordon, Christopher, res.cand@acu.edu.au January 2001 (has links)
Previous data have shown that the most prevalent, indirect plasma volume (PV) measurement technique, which utilises changes in haematocrit (Hct) and haemoglobin concentration ([Hb]), underestimates actual PV changes during immersion, when compared to a direct tracer-dilution method. An increase in the F-cell ratio (whole-body haematocrit (Hctw) to large-vessel haematocrit (Hctv) ratio) has been purported as a possible explanation, probably due to hydrostatic and thermally-mediated changes during water immersion. Previous investigators have not quantified the F-cell ratio during immersion. Therefore, this study sought to determine the effect of the F-cell ratio on the indirect method during both, thermoneutral and cold-water immersions. Seven healthy males were tested three times, seated upright in air (control: 21.2°C SD ±1.1), and during thermoneutral (34.5oC SD ±0.2) and cold-water immersion (18.6oC SD ±0.2), immersed to the third intercostal space for 60 min. Measurements during the immersion tests included PV (Evans blue dye column elution, Evans blue dye computer programme, and Hct [Hb]), red cell volume (RCV; sodium radiochromate), cardiac frequency (fc) and rectal temperature (Tre). Plasma volume during the control trial remained stable, and equivalent across the three tests. There was a hydrostatically-induced increase in PV during thermoneutral immersion, when determined by the Evans blue dye method (16.2%). However, the Hct/[Hb] calculation did not adequately reflect this change, and underestimated the relative PV change by 43%. In contrast, PV decreased during cold immersion when determined using the Evans blue dye method by 17.9% and the Hct/[Hb] calculation by 8.0%, respectively, representing a 52% underestimation by the latter method. There was a non-significant decline in RCV during both immersions. Furthermore, an increase (8.6%) and decrease (-14.4%) in blood volume (BV) was observed during thermoneutral and cold-water immersions, respectively. The decline in RCV during thermoneutral immersion attenuated the BV expansion. Despite the disparity between the PV methods, there was no increase in the F-cell ratio during either immersion. In contrast, there was a significant decline in the F-cell ratio during the control: air and thermoneutral immersion, which may indicate that other, undefined variables may impact on the stability of the red cell compartment. The current study is the first to show that the Hct/[Hb] method clearly underestimates PV changes during both thermoneutral and cold-water immersion. Furthermore, RCV was shown, for the first time, to decline during both immersions. However, the changes in the F-cell ratio during this study, did not account for the underestimation of PV change using the Hct/[Hb] method.
