From Consciousness to Life: Phenomenology and the Religious Phenomenon in Husserl, Heidegger, and Kierkegaard

Floyd, Gregory P. January 2016 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Jeffrey Bloechl / In my dissertation I aim to reconstruct the basic principles of Heidegger’s fledgling attempt at a phenomenology of religion in his 1920 and 1921 courses on St. Paul and St. Augustine. In order to understand the parameters and the stakes of that project I consider it light of Husserlian phenomenology as well as broader German trends in “scientific” [Wissenschaftliche] philosophy, theology, and history of religions. The measure of Heidegger’s success is his account of “formal indication,” which endeavors to provide a reflective (i.e. philosophical) articulation of life without privileging a particular theoretical standpoint. This attempt leads him to reconceive phenomenology as a hermeneutics of factical life and to shift his emphasis from a phenomenology of religious consciousness to a phenomenology of religious life. What distinguishes this account is its focus on the “motivated” or “enacted” nature of meaning from out of life. After reconstructing and elaborating Heidegger’s account I note a problematic tendency toward over-formalization that focuses exclusively on the enactment sense (Vollzugsinn) at the expense of the content sense (Gehaltsinn). I enlist the aid of Kierkegaard, whom Heidegger is reading carefully at this point in time, to show why a focus on the appropriative nature of meaning does not require one to ignore its content. I conclude by suggesting some ways that a modified version of Heidegger’s formally indicative philosophy of religion still may prove useful to us today. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2016. / Submitted to: Boston College.

Zelada Pierrend, Manuel Andrés 07 April 2016 (has links)

Pereira, Eduardo da Silva 20 December 2005 (has links)

Da genialidade sensível ao amor à norma: existência e consciência em Kierkegaard / From the sensitive geniality to love the standard: existence and consciousness in Kierkegaard

Myriam Moreira Protasio 07 February 2011 (has links)
Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Rio de Janeiro / The intention of this thesis is to dwell on three small, specific texts in the work Either/Or from Danish Soren Aybe Kierkegaard (1813-1855). The first two texts are The erotic immediate states and Seducer's Diary, and are among the texts of the first part of the aforementioned book. The third text entitled The balance between the esthetical and the ethical in shaping the personality and belongs to the second part of the same book. The basis of a detailed explanation of the contents of these texts intends to consider the issue of Kierkegaardian stages (aesthetic, ethical and religious) and how they relate to the existence and consciousness. Within the concrete existence, the question of consciousness appears to the Danish philosopher from the explanation of these three existential dimensions, which are constituted in line with affective provisions and also with material modes of living and acting closely described by the daily existence of character. Bereft, initially, of any determination, the conscience will be materializing itself stemming from its sensitive existence, which keeps different moments and possibilities of its own. The basic thesis being discussed in this context is that these existential moments cannot be considered an evolutionary process, but must be taken as possibilities or ways of life, with its positivity and its risks. This study aims to show how the current readings of Kierkegaard's philosophy tend to value the ethical and moral development of stadiums and ignore the dimension of being more original, the immediate dimension which, when neglected, creates a gap between man and himself.

The sanctification of friendship: reconciling preferential and non-preferential loves in Søren Kierkegaard's Works of love

Haman, John Patrick 01 May 2011 (has links)
In Works of Love (Kjerlighedens Gjerninger) Søren Kierkegaard contrasts two seemingly opposing forms of love. One, "preferential" love, primarily includes the love found in friendships and romances. The other, "non-preferential" or "neighbor love," is associated with Christian agape love. Some interpreters believe Kierkegaard's clear support of neighbor love as the "higher" form of love reveals an incompatibility between preferential relationships, like friendship, and universal Christian love. This reading imagines an "either/or" in which a person is forced to choose between Christian faith on one hand, and friendship/erotic love on the other. The objective of this paper is to argue against such an interpretation and to demonstrate that preferential love understood in the context of neighbor love is endorsed by Kierkegaard himself. A comparison of his thought to that of Robert O. Johann and an analysis both the social and religious context in which Works of Love was written will shed light on the rhetorical strategies at work and reveal the nature of the love that Kierkegaard promotes.
