Línguas ventantes : uma cartografia da expressão sonora / Winding meaning: a mapping of sound expression

Vargas, Felipe Nunes January 2011 (has links)
Trying to explore the semiotic potential that sound and music bring to mental health attention, this research intent to follow closely the sound experience on that clinical context. Taking the concept of “body” through Spinoza and Deleuze´s philosophy, we build a connection between aesthetic experience and human cognition, decomposing the process that makes sound affect and develop through the conscious body. As a method, a few sound experiences are fictionally presented as the “Imaginary Diary”, where some expressions between sound and sense are created to express the aesthetic complexity between sound and the cognitive body. Trying to reach the closest approach, the thinking and writing make a poetical effort to express the feelings and sensorial waves that sound experience evocates.

Quadros, Marta Campos de January 2011 (has links)
This thesis – Tá Ligado?! Práticas de Escuta de Jovens Urbanos Contemporâneos e Panoramas Sonoros na Metrópole, uma Pauta para a Educação – aims to show and to understand the productivity of the contemporary uban youth listening practices from portable sound devices i te construction of youth identities and cultures. In this sense I seek to characterize the listening practices in this research, rather than the physical act of listening from such portable sound devices, practiced by boys and girls moving through the Porto Alegre city spaces, I characterize the listening practices as social practice, practice of signification, therefore, a cultural practice. The theoretical support of this study is found in the field of Cultural Studies, adopting the postmodern ethnography and photoethnography as theoretical and methodological tools. It had been operacionalized through field observation and conversations records, field notes, photographic narratives, and monitoring of media products in circulation during th period of the research production. The field observation had taken place in Porto Alegre (RS) from July 2007 to July 2011. I had also conducted ethnographic interviews with eight boys and girls who stayed throughout the research process as more constant collaborators, considering the plurality of the universe investigated. The analyzes show the productivity of the listening practices from portable sound devices on certain youth identities and cultures, and e production of a lifestyle that has connectivity as he strongest characteristic.

Efektivita zjednodušené četby při výuce slovní zásoby: Kombinace dvou přístupů / The Efficiency of Graded Readers for Teaching Vocabulary: A Combination of Two Approaches

Sedláček, Martin January 2018 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with the relationship between graded readers and teaching vocabulary. We examine whether extensive reading leads to vocabulary acquisition on the basis of context provided by graded readers. In addition, we focus on the frequency of occurrence of individual lexical items and we interpret it as an important variable in teaching lexis. These two factors are compared using test data from two groups of experiment participants. The first group (the reading group) was asked to read the text at their own pace, while the second group was asked to read the text while listening to it being narrated by an English native speaker. Based on hitherto research, the listening group is expected to outperform the reading group. After introducing the topic in chapter 1, we attempt to define extensive reading in chapter 2. Graded readers are based on providing sufficient amount of context for understanding unknown vocabulary. In this chapter we contrast practical application of extensive reading with theoretical foundation in secondary literature. Chapter 3 delineates the methodology used in the present thesis. It is based on replicating a study by Waring and Takaki (2003), and also on research into audio- assisted reading. This methodology is used to measure the efficiency of reading and...

Gespreksontleding in die Maatskaplikewerkonderhoud: 'n kwalitatiewe studie

Rauch, Barend Venter 30 June 2007 (has links)
The purpose of the research is to explore social workers' listening skills pertaining to listening as communication skill during an experimental social work interview. The research methodology comprised unique application of a social work interview. A sample of five participating social workers was invited to listen to a video recording of a social work interview requesting them to identify information presented by the client through observation and listening by applying a set of predetermined theoretical conversation elements. The participation and involvement of participating social workers during the listening experiment was video recorded for subsequent evaluation. The conclusion reached from research findings indicates that the unique approach adopted by participating social workers' achieved mixed results towards hypothetic assistance offered to the experimental client. The researcher recommends that social workers be developed and trained in the art of maintaining effective listening skills during social work interviews to improve assistance to clients. / Social Work / M. An investigation of listening as a learning outcome of the literacy programme in grade one

Shaik, Naseema 03 1900 (has links)
This study investigates how listening, as part of the literacy learning programme is planned for and taught in the grade one class. The data was produced through semi-structured interviews of five participants, who were grade one educators in the urban area of Durban, Kwa Zulu Natal. Findings suggested the many factors that accounted for why some children in the grade one class do not listen and that educators need to plan for the teaching of listening. The researcher examines the use of multiple strategies, such as teaching responsively, including stimulating tasks, reading aloud, creating a purpose for listening, setting the stage for listening and modeling as strategies to teach listening. The study ends with recommendations for the Department of Education to present workshops to educators on the teaching of listening and for module courses at colleges and universities to offer specialized courses on the teaching of listening. The aim of this research which was conducted in the urban area of Durban, Kwa Zulu Natal, was to investigate how grade one educators were planning for and teaching listening. During this study, data was produced through semi-structured interviews of five participants, who were grade one educators. Findings of this study suggest that there were many factors that accounted for why some children in the grade one class do not listen. Findings also indicated that educators need to plan for the teaching of listening. / Ed. (Didactics))

Towards hypertextual music : digital audio, deconstruction and computer music creation

Britton, Sam January 2017 (has links)
This is a study of the way in which digital audio and a number of key associated technologies that rely on it as a framework have changed the creation, production and dissemination of music, as witnessed by my own creative practice. The study is built on my own work as an electronic musician and composer and draws from numerous collaborations with not only other musicians but also researchers and artists, as documented through commissions, performances, academic papers and commercial releases over an 9 year period from 2007 to 2016. I begin by contextualising my own musical practice and outlining some prominent themes associated with the democratisation of computing that the work of this thesis interrogates as a critical framework for the production of musical works. I go on to assess how works using various techniques afforded by digital audio may be interpreted as progressively instantiating a digital ontology of music. In the context of this digital ontology of music I propose a method of analysis and criticism of works explicitly concerned with audio analysis and algorithmic processes based on my interpretation of the concept of `hypertext', wherein the ability for computers to analyse, index and create multi-dimensional, non-linear links between segments of digital audio is best described as hypertextual. In light of this, I contextualise the merits of this reading of music created using these affordances of digital audio through a reading of several key works of 20th century music from a hypertextual perspective, emphasising the role information theory and semiotics have to play in analyses of these works. I proffer this as the beginnings of a useful model for musical composition in the domain of digital audio which I seek to explore through my own practice. I then describe and analyse, both individually and in parallel numerous works I have undertaken that seek to interrogate the intricacies of what it means to work in the domain of digital audio with audio analysis, machine listening, algorithmic and generative computational processes and consider the ways in which aspects of this work might be seen as contributing useful and novel insights into music creation by harnessing properties intrinsic to digital audio as a medium. Finally, I emphasise, based on the music and research presented in the thesis, the extent to which digital audio and the harnessing of increasingly complex computational systems for the production and dissemination of music has changed the ontology of music production, a situation which I interpret as creating both substantial challenges, but also great possibilities for the future of music.

A Comparison of the Effectiveness of Three Oral Language Systems in Improving the Receptive Language of Kindergarten Children

Francis, Patricia Sue Bryant 05 1900 (has links)
This study investigates the differences in receptive language of kindergarten children who are taught by different language systems. This study compares the effectiveness of the three most widely adopted oral language systems in the state of Texas. The systems used were (A) Alpha Time, (B) Beginning Readiness Kit; Beginning to Read, Write, and Listen Kits I and II, and (c) McMillan Series R, Bank Street, Threshold K. S. Analysis of variance techniques were used to analyze statistically pretest and posttest scores derived from the sample. The .05 level of significance was used throughout the statistical analyses for rejection or retention of the null hypotheses. Preliminary analysis of data determined no systematic bias for teacher variability or for within group variability. Hypotheses 1, 2, 3, and 5 were tested using a 2 x 3 analysis of covariance. The pretest was used as the covariant in this analysis. No statistically significant differences in the classroom mean scores were determined between teaching methods, teaching methods with only girls as subjects, teaching methods with only boys as subjects, and boys and girls. Hypothesis 4, concerning the pretest differences between boys and girls, was tested using a t-test for independent samples. No statistically significant differences were found. From the findings several conclusions can be drawn. The receptive language of kindergarten children can be expected to improve when taught by any of the three selected oral language systems. Boys do not need different oral language experiences from girls; therefore the sex of the children need not be a major consideration when an oral language system is selected. Other factors which need not be major considerations in the selection of an oral language system are the race and socioeconomic level of the children.
