Högläsningens betydelse för barns utveckling av literacy / The importance of reading aloud for children´s literacy development

Hällström, Johanna January 2018 (has links)

Literature presents a deep relevance to a person‟s whole formation. Rethinking and modifying the manner of reading a literary text and proposing reading activities which lead to the literary literacy contribute to the person‟s social and cognitive life, leading them to develop their capacity of criticizing and argumentation and, besides, make possible for them to understand the world in which they live and feel part of it. This way, literary literacy comprehends the literary reading practices as a social function and something useful to develop an independent reader. It‟s possible to find many researches that reinforce the reading practice; nevertheless, only few studies really provide an effective orientation for the application of literary literacy at school, through the reading of classic literary texts, clarifying how to read them, what to do and how to deal with them. Thus, this work discusses the importance of literary literacy as a goal to be achieved by literature teaching. From this perspective, this text aims to highlight the benefits which literary literacy, if managed adequately, can provide for the student‟s social and intellectual formation. This research presents, yet, the concept of literacy, so that we can make clear the meaning of literary literacy, because it‟s necessary to begin from the basic concepts in order to move forward with the literary literacy management at school. Considering the wonderings about literacy, we propose a set of activities, according to the principles of Cosson for literary literacy, applied to 7th grade of a federal public middle school in Recife, having as basis the book The Little Prince, by Saint Exupéry. We have mainly focused our bibliographic research on Paulino (1998) Paulino e Pinheiro (2004), Lajolo (2000), Kleiman (1995, 2005), Soares (2003, 2005), Colomer (2007), Dalvi e Jover-Faleiros (2013), Cosson (2014), among others. Therefore, this study originated from the need for more studies around the topic, objecting the student‟s literary literacy formation and the broadening of considerations about literature teaching at school.

The school that works : the literacy practices of a Brazilian municipal school

Batista, Luana Cristina de Moraes 16 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Sylvia Bueno Terzi / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Estudos da Linguagem / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-16T23:56:36Z (GMT). The aim of this research is to identify, based on the analysis of the practices of reading and writing, the model of literacy sanctioned by a public school in Brazil, situated in a rural area in the city of Matão (SP), the IDEB of which in the Prova Brasil (key instrument for measuring education quality) of 2005 was 7.3 - when the Brazilian average is 3.8 (on a scale from 0 to 10) -, besides verifying if the positive result achieved by the school was related to this model and/or to other contextual elements present in the community. For such, interviews with the professionals involved in the development of these practices were held, as well as with students from the school. Also observations were made, lessons were recorded and an analysis of documents related to the literacy practices of students in grade 4 of Elementary School was made, since Prova Brasil o is aimed at these students' performance. All of the data collected was analyzed based on the principles sanctioned by the New Studies on Literacy, which allow us to verify if the practices of reading and writing developed by/with the students both in the micro-context (school/classroom) and in the macro-context (community) are predominantly based on the conceptions defended by the Ideological Model of Literacy. The analysis of the data also revealed that these conceptions are also shared by other literacy agents in the community - like the family and government agencies in the municipal district -, showing the convergence between the dominant and dominated classes concerning the literacy practices developed in the community. The conclusions showed that the ideological approach adopted by the school and the values shared between the social instances of the community are directly related to the positive results obtained by the students in grade 4 in the Prova Brasil of 2005 / Mestrado / Lingua Materna / Mestre em Linguística Aplicada

E-skills and employability : a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) curriculum perspective

Mata, Songezo January 2015 (has links)
Magister Commercii (Information Management) - MCom(IM) / The high rate of youth unemployment is a global phenomenon and a worrying factor. This contradicted the opportunity presented by the ICT sector, which requires e-skills, particularly e-literacy/or digital literacy skills in the entire sectors of the economy, not only ICT. Ala-Mutka (2011) defines e-literacy skills as the "basic technical use of computers and the internet". ICT skills are viewed as essential in the modern day world in order to improve individual’s chances of securing and keeping employment. Various initiatives to improve youth employability in South Africa, particularly those that are studying TVET colleges or those have already graduated. Various approaches have been adopted such envisaged by the White Paper for Post-School Education and Training of 2013 i.e. preparation for workplace, self-employment through close cooperation of TVET colleges and industry (DHET, 2013). Employers assume that graduates are familiar with computer and Internet usage. Thus, the study set the following objectives: • To understand the theoretical and contextual background of promoting employability; • To explore existing employability frameworks that might be relevant for promoting employability; • To identify and categorize the factors that are relevant for promoting employability obtained from pertinent literature; • To validate these factors by interviewing key TVET stakeholders and ICT experts; • To propose an employability framework customized for the South African context; and • To explain the use of these factors within the proposed employability framework. The objectives were realised by reviewing pertinent literature, which led to the development of an employability conceptual research framework for South Africa. A conceptual research framework that consists of five factors from the e-skills national curriculum competency framework: (i) e-skills for service delivery; (ii) e-skills for new jobs; (iii) e-skills for existing jobs; (iv) self-employment; and (v) ICT practitioner skills. In-terms of e-skills levels i.e. ICT user skills, e-business skills and ICT practitioner skills. The first three sets of e-skills are associated with ICT user skill, e-skills for self-employment are associated with e-business skills and then ICT practitioner skills. This conceptual research framework was subsequently empirically verified using an interpretive approach by interviewing key TVET stakeholders and an ICT expert. The empirical findings affirmed the validity of the above-mentioned employability factors but also uncovered two additional factors: (iv) practical experience and infrastructure. These factors were subsequently incorporated into the final employability framework for South Africa. The main contribution of this study is the fact that it brings a new employability framework for TVET colleges for the South African context, with the hope that it can be applicable in similar environments in the developing context. There are some limitations in the present study due to a small research sample that was caused by the unavailability of employed graduates. However, it is believed that this limitation did not deem the results and the academic and practical contribution of the study invalid.

Professional development and literacy coaching: a case study of kindergarten, first, and second grade balanced literacy instruction

DeWeese, Christy Suzanne Puckett January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Curriculum and Instruction / Marjorie R. Hancock / To become lifelong readers, young children require instruction from teachers who integrate their knowledge of the reading process and expert instructional skills to support students' progress in reading and writing. These teachers are entitled to support from professional development to assist their implementing instructional approaches, which lead to student achievement. The purpose of this qualitative case study is to describe the impact of a year long balanced literacy professional development on 13 K-2 teachers and their students. The study focuses on the potential impact of ongoing professional development and literacy coaching. Participants engaged in study sessions to expand their understanding of literacy learning processes, to read recent reading research, and to implement guided reading instruction. Three of the participants allowed me to act as their literacy coach in their K-2 classrooms. Results of this study suggest that participating teachers made changes in instructional practices, which aligned with balanced literacy practices. The three teachers who worked with me as their literacy coach expressed positive impacts from the opportunities to collaborate in their classrooms with a coach. Results of the study reflect differences in teachers' responses to professional development and to literacy coaching. Even with trusting relationships, not all teachers became reflective or analytical. The findings of this study confirm and support the literature and research that show the literacy goals of all children can be met through a balanced literacy approach to instruction which is designed and guided by focused and sustained professional development to deepen teachers' understandings.

Infusing information and communication technologies (ICTs) into the teaching and learning of mathematical literacy

Minty, Rehana 07 June 2012 (has links)
M.Ed. / Infusing Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) into the teaching and learning of Mathematical Literacy Located in the qualitative research paradigm, this study was conducted in eight Gauteng Department of Education schools in the Ekurhuleni North District 6, in Gauteng South Africa and aimed to investigate the use of ICTs in the teaching and learning of Mathematical Literacy. This study focused on how Mathematical Literacy teachers use ICTs to enhance their teaching and learning. In addition, teachers’ attitude, ICT competency as well as the challenges that they face in using ICTs to enhance the teaching and learning of Mathematical Literacy was investigated. Not only is knowledge of ICTs important but the competence of ICT users, namely teachers and learners requirements need to be illuminated through extensive and intensive research. For this reason, this study could, despite its limitations, pave the way for far more elaborate studies to be conducted. This study will contribute towards an understanding of teachers’ experiences of the use of ICTs in South African classrooms. The need exists for teachers to be trained in computer literacy skills and technology skills as well as for school management and the Department of Education (DoE) to provide the necessary support that is deemed essential for the successful use of ICTs in the teaching and learning of Mathematical Literacy. The findings of this study suggests that unless school management and the DoE providethe necessary training and support for teachers, the likelihood of attaining the goal of all learners being ICT literate by 2013, may not be realised.
