Development of flexible automotive measurement adaptors for the PQ25 VWSA platformPretorius, Shaun January 2009 (has links)
The following work describes all knowledge required in the creation of new automotive optical Photogrammetrical adaptors, which allow the user thereof to measure a fully assembled vehicle in its natural position, i.e. on its wheels for the PQ25 platform at Volkswagen of South Africa. The system is the only method available to the manufacturing plant to measure a fully assembled vehicle in this manner. The FlexMess system allows for a quick portable measurement of a vehicle at all stages of Vehicle manufacturing, aligned via the Volkswagen RPS standards. In the first part of the work, the problem of establishing a system capable of measuring the PQ25 platform is achieved by redesigning the PQ24 platform (previous generation Polo) to the new PQ25 vehicle platform. Once the system was redesigned a prototype adaptor system was created. In the second part of the work, the redesigned adaptor system is checked for its accuracy and repeatability. In a statistical analysis of the adaptors ability to measure the reference points needed for alignment of a vehicle, the system is compared to a CMM and verified that the limits fall within the limits of the original FlexMesśs certified accuracy limits. The last part of the work looks at addressing some of the problems of the FlexMess system by creating concepts for an ideal future FlexMess adaptor system.

Optical absorption and photoconductivity in magnesium oxide crystalsPeria, William Thomas January 1957 (has links)
The purpose of this investigation was the determination of the nature of certain imperfections in magnesium oxide crystals. Optical absorption and photoconductivity spectra of specimens cleaved from a number of larger pieces were measured. The effects of vacuum heating, of non-stoichiometry and of ultraviolet and X-ray irradiation were investigated. The nature of the imperfections could not be inferred from the experimental results but an energy level diagram consistent with all the data has been deduced. A comparison of the present work with pertinent data from the literature is presented and a basic error in previous photoconductivity measurements is pointed out. A method for the determination of the sign of the charge carriers excited during photoconductivity measurements is described. / Science, Faculty of / Physics and Astronomy, Department of / Graduate

Visualization of nodes, antinodes and lateral displacements in vibrating platesNiven, Robert D. January 1967 (has links)
The use of optical techniques for the study of vibrating surfaces has thus far been limited to measuring small amplitudes on the order of a few hundred microinches. To extend the measuring range to much larger amplitudes a completely new technique is sought. In this thesis optical vibration methods are presented that allow amplitudes of .001" and up to be investigated, the upper limit being determined solely by the prohibitive size and cost of the equipment. The study is based on a combination of the shadow moire deflection measuring method and the Salet-Ikeda slope measuring method which, as far as the author knows, have been applied only to the study of static situations. It is shown how these two methods may be applied to the dynamic case to permit the direct visualization of nodal and antinodal locations and displacements in vibrating plates. Three specimens are studied: a cantilever beam, a square cantilever plate and a circular free plate. Complete photographic results along with theoretical or experimental solutions are given for each specimen. / Applied Science, Faculty of / Mechanical Engineering, Department of / Graduate
