Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) approach has highlighted as an important business concept that supports the managing of all processes related to products, from the initial conception to disposal. The efficiency and effectiveness of these processes are crucial to ensure the business survival. Thus, the adoption of a performance measurement system (PMS) should help to control and improve these processes, but the development of a PMS for PLM is a difficult task, mainly due to the unstructured and non-repetitive nature of the processes that compose the PLM approach. The problem that motivates the development of this project is the difficulty in developing a PMS and on performance measurement for PLM. Seeking to fill this gap, this research proposes to develop a framework to support the development of a performance measurement system for product lifecycle management. This framework consist of a method for developing a PMS, a compilation of recommendations for such development oriented to PLM approach, and a list of performance indicators and their attributes needed to define their application. To conduct the study were used two approaches: i) systematic literature review, and ii) multiple case studies. It is hoped that this research can contribute to companies wishing to develop a PMS for PLM and thus overcome the inherent difficulties of performance measurement for product lifecycle management.

Desempenho e competitividade em pequenas e médias empresas: estudo do setor hoteleiro da região central do Estado de São Paulo / Performance and competitiveness in small and medium sized enterprises: study of the hotel sector of the central region of São Paulo StateRicci, Gysele Lima 08 February 2010 (has links)
The general aim of this research is to evaluate the existence of an orientation of the organizational control utilized in small and medium sized hotels and its adequacy for the key competitivity factors of the sector. The research was conducted in the central region of São Paulo State comprising the Paulista Circuits of Chapada Guarani and Ecocaipira, based on the vacuum that exists between the strategic and operational visions in the entrepreneural management, i. e., the lack of integration between the strategic guidelines and the operation of the enterprises. The performance measurement is an activity that aims to gradually improve the action of enterprises, so that they keep themselves competitive, which is the basis in the strategic process. The field work was divided into three stages, of which the first and the second focused on the quantitative approach. In the first phase the aim was the identification and quantification of hotels in the central region of São Paulo state, considering the mapping of the research group of GEOPE at São Carlos Engineering School - USP. In the second phase, the concern about the performance control and measurement of the organization was characterized. Finally, the third phase focused on the qualitative approach, in which a case study was conducted in order to verify the indicators utilized by the enterprises and check that they are oriented towards competitiveness. As a main result, it was possible to observe that the performance control mechanisms are adequate for the characteristics of the social context of each organization and, therefore, related to the enterprise strategy. The performance indicators of large and small hotels are similar, differing only in their formalization.

Pathways in context: Background characteristics and demographics in student progression through higher educationRobinson, Rosalie Ann January 2006 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy(PhD) / This research develops a theory to explain the pathways taken by students through higher education in Australia. From a socio-ecological perspective, pathways are conceptualised as a diverse series of choices within learning contexts. In relation to Australian higher education, the model of pathways through undergraduate courses emphasises contexts in which personal and social factors contribute to the choices students make over time. A new method identifies and documents longitudinal pathways of progression through university degree courses. Higher education population data was examined over time to test the Pathways Theory of student progression. This unique detailed longitudinal approach documented all the pathway choices made by a cohort of students as they progressed in and out of their courses over time. Pathways were documented to the point of departure from a course and beyond, to include the extended pathways of students who returned to their courses following stop-outs and transfers. The results highlight the importance of a longitudinal approach in explaining pathways through specific course contexts. This research underlines the importance of considering context and diversity in student behaviours when using indicators of performance, retention and completion. Understanding the relationship between the personal and social characteristics of students and their specific learning contexts contributed to an understanding of the choice behaviour of students as they negotiated pathways through courses within the broader context of higher education. Challenges and the use of performance measurements in humanitarian supply chainsWillner, Daniel, Zafeiridis, Stavros January 2013 (has links)
The field of humanitarian logistics and supply chain management is increasingly the subject of research. Even though there has been some research in the field in the past, the necessity for more research related to the measurement of the effectiveness of humanitarian supply chains is required. Humanitarian supply chain management deals not only with natural disasters but also with man-made disasters. Thus, different types of disasters create different challenges for humanitarian aid. Moreover, the different stages of the disasters require different courses of action. The lack of extended research in the field of humanitarian supply chain and logistics, the increase of the impact of disasters as well as the differences between the commercial and the humanitarian supply chains, make it clear that the sector should find ways to improve its efficiency. Tools and metrics can be used to measure and improve the efficiency of the supply chains. According to literature there are no sophisticated measures of effectiveness for humanitarian logi stics and supply chains. The purpose of this thesis is to identify the main challenges in humanitarian supply chains and what is the role of performance measurements in humanitarian operations. Moreover, the thesis aims to identify an appropriate model for measuring and thus, enhancing performance in the humanitarian supply chains. The research strategy chosen for this study is a holistic multiple case study. The empirical data is collected through interviews. For this research in total 3 organisations’ representatives and 2 volunteers were interviewed. The collected data have been analysed by combining theories and previous studies in the literature. The main findings from analysing the empirical data revealed that, depending on the disaster phase, humanitarian organisations face different challenges in their supply chains. By implementing appropriate performance measurements, the humanitarian organisations can limit the impact of the challenges in the supply chain operations, gain more relevant and precise information regarding the humanitarian operations, and enhance supply chain coordination among different stakeholders. As an outcome, by implementing appropriate performance measurement systems, the humanitarian organisations can overcome some of these challenges in their supply chains, and therefore enhance the overall supply chain performance.

Forecasting System at IKEA JönköpingDugic, Mahir, Zaulich, Daniel January 2011 (has links)
This thesis has been performed at IKEA Jönköping. The purpose was to identify what kind of forecasting system IKEA Jönköping is using and analyze its problems. The data collection was based on interviews with a total of 6 people working at IKEA Jönköping, IKEA of Sweden (IOS) in Älmhult and observation at the Sales Supply Support division (SSS). From the empirical study several problems were identified linked with the performance of the forecasting. Problems with understanding the initial forecast from IOS were identified and this was because of lack of information about demand. SSS also wanted to know their local market in a better way this to be able to make more accurate forecast. Finally all the departments at IKEA Jönköping which were working with forecasting wanted a closer collaboration between SSS, sales and the logistics department also wanted to have better information exchange. The result from this thesis explain what kind of forecasting system IKEA Jönköping is using and gives suggestions to solve the problems mentioned above. We have highlighted the importance of having a closer collaboration between IOS and IKEA Jönköping and between the different departments working with forecasting. Furthermore we have explained the importance of creating guidelines and routines regarding the forecasts and the flow of information. By considering our solutions presented in this thesis we think that the problems addressed above could be managed and hopefully lead towards a better forecasting performance at IKEA Jönköping.

How implementation differs between industries in SwedenBennis, Isabel, Mattila-Markus, Kajsa January 2015 (has links)
Background and problem - Negative environmental impacts are increasing due to various global development trends and sustainability reporting is growing among companies. To get a comparability between companies' sustainability work GRI can be used which publishes guidelines for what and how companies should report. Previous research shows that there are differences between sectors in what they choose to report.Purpose - The study aims to examine how sustainability reporting differs between industries in Sweden and what these differences are caused by. Delimitation - The study has been limited to analysing major Swedish listed companies' sustainability reports, published in 2014, which applies the Global Reporting Initiative guidelines. Only companies' work on environmental and social responsibility have been studied. Method - In the study a quantitative survey approach has been used to make it easier to measure and compile the collected empirical data. Information has been gathered from companies' annual and sustainability reports, as well as their web pages. Data has through content analysis been reworked to facilitate the information management. Results and conclusions - The study shows that there are differences between the analysed industries since some of them reported a greater extent than others. The material industry is the sector that accounts for most information while the health industry reports the least. Greenhouse effect, energy usage and information about employees are those indicators that are reported most frequently among all companies. Proposal for further research - In continued research, a similar survey can be done but where interviews are conducted to gain a deeper understanding of the corporates sustainability work. A comparison between the public and private sectors as well as examining sustainability reporting over time are also suggestions for further research.

Definitions of performance indicators in real-time and lapsed-time analysis in performance analysis of sportsChoi, Hyongjun January 2008 (has links)
Performance analysis is an objective method of gathering the data of performance, and generally transforms these observations into numerical data. Performance indicators, as well as a selection or elements of sucessful outcome, have often been used in order to feedback augmented information in performance analysis systems, but they have rarely been considered within the classification of performance analysis systems based on timing of analysis and feedback. The main aim of this study is to investigate performance indicators used within real-time and lapsed time systems so that the definitions of the performance indicators, the effectiveness of the performance indicators, their reliability and validity within real time analysis systems can be analyzed.

Performance measurement in African semi-autonomous revenue authorities : the case of Kenya, South Africa and Tanzania : how can performance measures in African semi-autonomous revenue authorities (ARAs) be strategic, efficient and effective?Kariuki, Elizabeth Judy Nyawira January 2012 (has links)
Semi-autonomous revenue authorities (ARAs) have been established all over the world as a distinctive institutional model outside the traditional public service aimed at enhancing tax administration, and thereby raising tax revenues. In order to boost the robustness of their operations, substantial expenditures have gone towards modernising ARAs. Expenditures have been guided by medium-term corporate-wide plans, and the results monitored, assessed and reported using performance measures. Performance measurement has proved challenging for ARAs to implement and sustain in practice. Some of the challenges evolve around weak capacity, implementation costs, issues to do with quantification, competing demands from a wide range of constituents, the inappropriate selection of measures and a bias towards performance measures that focus on finances. As a means for enhancing performance measurement, there are practices, lessons and theoretical perspectives that can be discerned from the broadspectrum of literature on performance measurement in the public sector and ARAs from around the world. This thesis explores how performance measurement in African ARAs can be more strategic, efficient and effective by ascertaining which key factors shape its adoption. The research focuses on the in depth study of three ARAs in Sub Saharan Africa, involving a combination of structured interviews with internal and external stakeholders, the administration of a survey instrument and review of ARA documents. The final chapters of the thesis deploy fuzzy set logic techniques to identify and test the significance of various causal conditions in the adoption of performance measurement in ARAs, as a plausible answer to the research question.
