But when you Break Gender Norms, Something Collapses in Peoples Collective Minds” : A Qualitative Study about Trans- and Nonbinary People’s Experiences of their Time in SchoolSparr Holinkova, Katerina January 2023 (has links)
Background: Mental illness among people who identify as trans and non-binary and the role schools play to prevent this has been a hotly debated issue in recent years. Based on the Swedish context, we know that the schools' responsibility according to law is to work inclusively and normcritically, with a focus on preventing discrimination. Reports regarding how schools work with these issues varies, yet studies indicate that there are significant shortcomings in schools’ work with inclusion and anti-discrimination regarding trans and non-binary pupils.Aim: By adopting a queerphenomenological theoretical approach this study investigates trans and non-binary people’s experiences of their time in school, with a focus on experiences of treatment, inclusion and school environment.Method: This phenomenological study is based on qualitative interviews with 7 young adults aged 18-30, all of whom identified under the umbrellaterms trans and non-binary. When the data was collected, it was analysed using a reflexive thematic analysis. Results: The result was presented in four main themes that were consistent with my interviews. The themes were, navigating in the binary norm, safety, unsafety and othering, the queer artistic room and the queer queerness.Discussion: My results were largely consistent with previous research regarding the informants experience of the school as a normative arena. The results point to a lack of knowledge among teachers and schoolstaff on LGBTQ issues and how which influenced lessons and the non inclusive language used by the staff. The results further indicate that identity navigation in school among informants included the interaction between various identity categories such as gender identity, ethnicity, sexuality and disability and the importance of an intersectional perspective, when working in a school enviroment. Lastly, an important result was the importance of engaging in various aesthetic forms of expression and queer identity among the informants. The artistic theme could inform future approaches to preventive work in schools regar

Analyzing character portrayals in picture books is a well-researched area in the humanities, not least in literature and gender studies. It fulfills an important function as these depictions can be seen as confirming or challenging hegemonic notions of gender and age. Specifically, this study concerns the picture book character Mamma Mu. She has been a subject of interest for academic studies before this one. However, there are no studies centered around her age and how this affects whether her actions can be considered intelligible or not. Placed in the intersection of gender, literature and girlhood studies, and from a skew theory perspective as presented mainly by Maria Margareta Österholm (2012), the aim of this thesis is to study how Mamma Mu as an adult feminine subject exhibits different age-related expressions of femininity, and how she relates to notions of accepted behavior in relation to adulthood. Based on the extremes of expected as well as adult and skewed as well as childish femininity, this thesis thus argues that Mamma Mu exhibits an oscillating movement between these extremes.

Den förs”könande” läroplanen : Sexualitet, samtycke och relationer i svenska läroplaner / The engendering curriculum : Sexuality, consent and relationships in Swedish curriculumsDören, Håkan January 2023 (has links)

Aktiva flickor : En kritisk diskursanalys av modern barnlitteraturSäfström Aadde, Elin, Jakobsson, Evelina January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine representations, discourses and constructions of gender in modern children'sliterature aimed at both girls and boys. By using Faircloughs critical discourse as method two discourses was identified, feminist discourse and queer discourse. By using theories by Yvonne Hirdman, Judith Butler and Norman Fairclough the study shows that despite the fact that children's literature contains feminist and queer discourse, prevailing dominant gender discourses are also made visible. This through stereotypical perceptions of gender and what is male or female. Furthermore, the study shows that there is an ambition to include more identities in modern children's literature which can be seen as a sign of a weakening of the dominant gender discourses. Finally, this study can contribute to increasing knowledge about prevailing discourses in children's literature.

Sexuellt Självskadebeteende - Definitioner ur ett queerperspektivPerder, Elin, Söder, Alexandra January 2014 (has links)
This thesis discusses the relatively new concept of sexual self-harm. The study presents earlier research that relate to self-harm in general and risk behavior among youth. Six interviews were conducted with both specialists in sexological problems and with counselors. The study aimed to look closely at the definitions of sexual self-harm, and the values surrounding gender and good versus destructive sexuality that they convey. The material was thematized and analyzed using queer theory and sexological theory. In our results we identified eight potential criteria for sexual self-harm, some of which highlighted the function of using sex in order to handle anxiety and as degradation of oneself. Our informants conveyed a certain ambivalence regarding how good versus destructive sexuality is expressed. The study could also identify an invisibility of boys' vulnerability regarding selling sexual services. The results further showed that what makes sexual self-harm unique is that the individual hands over power over him-or-herself to other people, and that the individual in the treatment context shouldn’t be encouraged to abstain completely from sex. The conclusion marks the importance of allowing the young person to formulate his or her problem. More research in this area is needed and discussions should be held on how the field of social work can best support young people in their sexual development.

Queer representation in digital games : A textual analysis of of The Last of Us Part IINordin, Josefin January 2022 (has links)
As a fairly new form of media that is currently increasing its number of LGBTQ characters, digital games and their queer representation is an interesting research are, in equal parts in order to see what potential stereotypes and tropes may be in play aswell as to compare it to what has been done before in other forms of storytelling. The question at hand for this thesis is regarding Queer representation in the commercial game The Last of Us Part II, released in 2020. The game was analyzed through the use of a textual analysis. The main, queer, characters were analyzed through their dialogue, their backstory, their progression as well as the way they were presented and received by the rest of the game-world inhabitants. In order to fully understand the characters, the research includes media representation in film and tv that may have contributed to the way their storylines as well as characterization was created, ranging from the horror-genre itself to LGBTQ representation in both film, tv and games. The research provided interpretations of the main characters and the ways theirq ueerness can be interpreted. The characters and their narrative was deemed to contain both positive and negative portrayals, while similarities to real-life experiences of LGBTQ individuals could be seen as mirrored in this post-apocalyptic game-worldfilled with zombies.

The aim of the study is to examine which present conceptions of sexuality there are in treatment of substance abuse for men. The intention is to examine how staff members in these environments perceive clients’ sex and sexuality as well as studying if and in that case how they work with sexuality in treatment. A qualitative method formed the methodological approach and semistructured interviews were carried out for the collection of data. Four staff members from two different treatment institutions for substance abuse were interviewed. To analyse the material constructionist theory and queer theory were used in relation to heteronormativity, sexuality and sex/gender. The analysis shows that sexuality was perceived as being in relation to addiction and problems which affects how the work with sexuality was carried out in the institutions. Among the staff members there are insecurity in how to work with and approach sexuality. However, preventing relationships was described as the main objective when working with sexuality. The clients’ sexuality was constructed based on sex and substance abuse. Furthermore heterosexuality was described by the staff as a homogeneus and normative group while homosexuality was described and perceived as problematic. Finally, homosexuality was regarded as a sexual identity while heterosexuality was not, which as a consequence maintains heterosexuality as the norm and starting point in treatments of substance abuse.

"Man pratar ju inte om äldres sexualitet". Hur äldreomsorgen belyser HBTQ-frågorEdqvist, Susanne, Lind, Karin January 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate how various professionals in eldercare are working with LGBT issues. The study is based on qualitative interviews and includes five informants with different tasks in eldercare. Interview results were analyzed based on various themes in an interview guide, using queer theory. The results show that LGBT issues are not illuminated as individual issues, but could if necessary be discussed in diversity and equality issues. The informants described the importance of good treatment, no matter what sexual orientation the patient had. All informants had noticed a desexualization of older individuals. They also described an assumption that people born in the 1940´s will be a generation with higher requirements to be able to be open with their sexual orientation. The study also shows that all professions are experiencing that, in the future, there will be a need to lift the LGBT issue and to implement it in education programs.

Queering Translation StudiesMazzei, Cristiano A 01 January 2007 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis focuses on the intricate representations of gay men in Brazilian Portuguese and English, and the complexities translators face when encountering such specificities. It also addresses the issue of translating out of one's native tongue and how not belonging to the receiving culture’s norms enables minority texts not to be so easily assimilated and appropriated by the dominant target language, English.
