Den prestigefyllda bildens skådespel : En historisk jämförelse av World Press Photo of the YearZetterberg, Emil, Petersson, Emil January 2016 (has links)
The aim of our study was to examine which news images the media industry choose to reward. The World Press Photo Awards is an anual competition in which a jury of professional photo journalists appoints a winner among over 90 000 contributions. We have studied twelve pictures that have won World Press Photo of the Year over the time span of six decades to explore the characteristics of the winning pictures, but also to give a perspective over time. For the purpose of our study, we took a closer look at the roles of the people in the pictures, as well as the attributes and contexts related to them. Our findings indicate that myths seem to play a central part in the telling and retelling of stories. The tradgedy of human lives is a reoccurring element, and the people are in most cases depicted in a negative context. The story of the victim, for example, was common in the winning pictures. We could see that civilians frequently appears in photographs, especially suffering children who often stands as a symbol of weakness. As connected to the mishap of people, our research found similarities to other studies focusing on how news stories speak to our compassion and emotions.

On the run the the land of border controls : A study of Dagens Nyheter and Sydsvenskan’s portrayal of refugeesAlm, Agnethe, Ronnebäck, Tove January 2017 (has links)
In the autumn of 2015 a huge amount of refugees were on the run to Sweden. The news media described the situation as a refugee crisis and border controls were initiated. The aim of this study was to examine how two Swedish newspapers, one national and one local, portrayed refugees at the time when the border controls were initiated in Sweden. The questions examined were: How are the refugees portrayed, what are the similarities and differences between Dagens Nyheter and Sydsvenskan’s portrayal of the refugees? To approach this we made two different analysis of reports from each newspaper, three from Dagens Nyheter and two from Sydsvenskan. We did a framing analysis on the text and a semiotic analysis on the pictures. Findings show that the portrayal of refugees are very similar in both newspapers. The refugees are described as inferior, but at the same time brave, well-educated and hopeful. We also found that refugees often are portrayed as “the others” and the citizens of Sweden are portrayed as “we”. Although the similarities outweighs, we found some interesting differences in the newspapers portrayal of the refugees. For example, in Dagens Nyheter the hopefulness is combined with a positive and joyful approach, while Sydsvenskan describes the hope with an uncertainty and concern about the future.

Srovnávací sémiotická analýza vybraných protektorátních a raně socialistických agitačních plakátů vyskytujících se na území někdejšího Československa / Comparative semotic analysis of selected propagandistic poster from Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia and early socialist era in former CzechoslovakiaBaláková, Zuzana January 2017 (has links)
The diploma thesis focuses on the analysis of the selected protectorate and socialist propaganda posters from the forties and early fifties of the 20th century. The analyzed period ends with year 1953. This particular piece of work strives to set the whole subject in a larger theoretical framework. Furthermore the characteristic features of the given ideologies, the theory of semiotics and a brief description of the given historical period is also encompassed. Within the theory of semiotics the main inspiration is drawn from the works of Ferdinand de Saussure, Charles Sanders Peirce and Charles Morris. The most crucial source for the semiotic analysis is the book Mythology from Roland Barthes, especially its second theoretical part of Myth today, from which the methodological approach was gathered. The semiotic analysis allows one to uncover and expose the hidden meanings of texts. Ten posters were chosen in total for the analysis, five from the protectorate era and five from the late forties and early fifties. This was carried out in order to juxtapose pairs of images which portray the same motif or theme. The aim of this thesis is to analyze the applied semiotic components of the individual posters and then to compare the respective motifs and elements within the two ideologies and the extent to...

The construction of women and men in a fashion magazine : A qualitative study from a gender perspectiveMöllervärn, Elin January 2019 (has links)
The aim of this study was to examine how men and women were portrayed in a fashion magazine through time. Magazines convey pictures of gender through both text and image, which subconsciously affects us in the daily life. The study examines a total of 17 reportages from the year 2008 and 2018. A critical discourse analysis constitutes the study’s methodological framework, combined with a semiotic analysis. After I separately examined men and women in the fashion magazine Damernas värld, I compared them to get a result of how the magazine portrayed the genders in different ways. The differences were relatively big in how the magazine portrayed women in 2008 and 2018. There were also a noticeable difference in how the magazine portrayed men in the different periods. The results show that the way women were portrayed in 2008, were similar to how the magazine portrayed men in 2018. There were also similarities in the portrayal of men in 2008 to women in 2018. The result indicates that the magazine followed existing cultural gender norms in 2008, but has taken a different path in 2018.

Previous issue date: 2013-12-02 / This dissertation aims to conduct a semiotic analysis of six government posters about the risks of HIV and AIDS. Directed at the female public, the referred pieces instigate discussion about sexuality in women of different age groups and marital status - they have common topics such as the use of condoms, the necessity of going through medical exams for early diagnosis and the possible adherence to the correct clinical treatment. The corpus of this research is made up of six 50cm X 40cm posters, displayed in public places like hospitals, medical centers, NGOs and others. We selected posters that follow this calendar: World AIDS Day Campaign in 2010; Carnival Campaign in 2011; World AIDS Day Campaign in 2004; World AIDS Day Campaign for pregnant women in 2004; International Women's Day Campaign in 2013 and Carnival Campaign in 2009. This analysis is based on theories of greimasian plastic semiotics, more specifically the use of Greimas's semiotic square, and textual discourse studies. The relevance of this research is linked to the importance of public health politics / Esta dissertação tem por objetivo fazer uma análise semiótica de seis cartazes publicitários governamentais sobre o risco do HIV e da Aids.
Lado B lado A - uma crônica social: análise semiótica do CD do Rappa / Side A Side B - a social chronicle: semiotic analysis of Rappa\'s CDSilva, Maria Rita Aredes da 07 August 2009 (has links)
Rappa, in spite of being a pop rock band, has an important profile in the hip hop scene, and its 1999, Side B Side A, touches on an extremely important theme to the literary society as well as our society in general: the urban violence. This CD exposes the laws imposed by the drug lords to the shanty town people from the hills of Rio de Janeiro, who have to live with them, like the law of silence, for example. This creates a whole set of problems. On one side, the police, representing the government, who drives through the hills on armored cars (caveirão), has proven to be ineffective, in spite of its ostentatious methods, which leave a bloody trail of deaths. On the other side, there is the organized and undercover militia, which demands bribes from the inhabitants in exchange for security. This band brings these cries from the streets to the stage, and the lyrics on this CD, almost all written by Marcelo Yuka (who left the band in 2002), accomplished their mission. With a strong political appeal, the songs denounce the social inequality and portray the life of societys outcasts. All songs from Side B Side A will be scrutinized to show the evidence of the writing strategies employed to unify this work. We will look, through the composers eyes, how the relationships between the inhabitants, the police and the traffickers are established in the shanty towns in Rio, and more specifically, in the Engenho Novo community. It is mandatory to show that urban violence is not an isolated scenario. Regardless of the fact that it seems confined to the ghettos, it actually affects the whole fabric of the society. Side B Side A unveils the hidden back stage events guarded by AR15 guns and sentry boys on the hills. Moreover, it is an important document not only of the Brazilian outcasts but also of the research on the musical production of the 90s. The methodology to be used will be the analysis in semiotics, based on the tools used by Algirdas Julien Greimas. And the theory of songwriting analysis, developed by Luiz Tatit, will also be used.

"Jag får vara tjock, smal, hela registret. Det är jag som bestämmer." : En kritisk diskursanalys om hur kampen mot kroppshets synliggörs på Instagram. / “I can be thick, slim, the whole registry. I am the one who decides.” : A critical discourse analysis on how the fight against body anxiety is made visible on Instagram.Lundin, Caroline, Lindberg, Matilda January 2018 (has links)
In today’s medialized society we are fed with a constant flow of advertisements, no matter where we are. In these advertisements we see skinny and retouched ideal bodies, especially female bodies. The images shown in the media are the reference frameworks for the human body and in many cases, a conservative social order is propagated where women must exhibit an attractive exterior. This is a social problem for many women all around the world, and the work to counteract these tight ideals is called body activism. This study aims to investigate which different discourses prevail over the fight against body anxiety between different users on Instagram in order to broaden the understanding of how body anxiety is counteracted. The theoretical framework begins with theory and previous research on postmodern feminism and continues with studies related to digital feminism. Subsequently studies on female bodies and their ideals are presented, as well as the shame that is often linked to the norm-breaking body. Finally, the objectification and observation of the female body is presented. The critical discourse analysis is used in combination with a semiotic analysis to examine both image and the text that is linked to it. We have used Faircloughs three-dimensional framework for studying discourse as well as semiotic analytical tools such as connotations and mythologies. In conclusion of this study, we have interpreted these discourses about the struggle of body anxiety as a way of eventually changing the social norms and structures that prevail today. This has been done in different ways by different people, but with similar focus and goals. These people have shared their own experiences in the hope of spreading a body-positive mindset to their readers.
