Beyond Suzie Wong? An Analysis of Sandra Oh’s Portrayal in Grey’s Anatomy

Jones, Norma 08 1900 (has links)
In my study, I examine if and how Sandra Oh’s portrayal of Dr. Cristina Yang in Grey’s Anatomy, a primetime network drama, reifies or resists U.S. mediated stereotypes of Asian American females. I situate my intercultural study in an interpretive paradigm because I am want to explore how the evolving characteristics of existing the Asian American female mediated stereotype as they influence Asian American female identity. Additionally, I trace the historical development of Asian and Asian American stereotypes yellow peril to the model minority; and from Dragon Lady, Lotus Blossom, Geisha, and Suzie Wong. From my textual analysis, I suggest that when portrayals simultaneously reify and resist characteristics of existing Asian American stereotypes, they may help to breakdown perceived binaries of existing Asian and Asian American stereotypes.

The purpose of this dissertation is to identify different forms of female sexuality representation in contemporary Brazilian magazines aimed at female audiences. The specific aim is to verify how much these representations get close or far from long-standing feminine stereotypes built in Western civilization. The research corpus is composed of three publications by some traditional Brazilian printing houses: the Nova and Lola magazines (the last one already extinct) by Editora Abril and Marie Claire by Editora Globo, collected along six months – from January through June 2013. Theoretical fundamentals used in this work include results of research about feminism, the history of women in the Western world, identity as a narrative construction, social interactions and communication. Categorical content analysis, as a proposal by Laurence Bardin was the methodology used to analyze the selected material. A research work about the reception of this product has also been conducted. The overall conclusion suggests the existence of an idea of “modernizing in order not to transform” a characteristic that has been found in magazines and seems to have been highlighted in the last decades.

Karsten, Rikke January 2018 (has links)
En del omslag ställer sig dock utanför den diskurs som används och visar på att det över tid sker ett skifte i hur män och kvinnor representeras, där skillnaderna mellan hur könen porträtteras i media blir allt färre.Sökord: Genus, Representation, Diskursanalys, Media, Stereotyper, Makt, Veckans Affärer / AbstractThe aim of the research has been to investigate how women and men are represented in the industry magazine Veckans Affärer, and if there are any differences in gender representation, which ones. The study's focus has in the representation of both sexes during the period 2011and 2017. The question to be answered is: How are women and men depicted in the trade magazine Veckans Affärer between 2011 and 2017? Are there any differences and / or similarities in how women and men are presented on the cover of Veckans Affärer over time? Representation theory together with discourse analysis forms the basis for the visual analysis on which the study is based, along with gender related research in media and semiotics. It has been those elements that included the analysis of the 34 newspaper coverings that show that men and women over time are represented differently. Some covers, however, is not part of the used discourse, indicating that over time there has been a shift in how men and women are represented, where the differences between the gender portrayal in the media are becoming less obvious. Keywords: Gender, Representation, Discoure analysis, Media, Stereotype, Power

Reprezentace Vietnamců v českém tisku / Representation of Vietnamese in the Czech newspapers

Bartůňková, Tereza January 2009 (has links)
Diploma thesis "Representation of Vietnamese in the czech newspapers" deals with representation of this ethnic minority living in the Czech Republic in some czech newspapers. Vietnamese are the third biggest group of foreigners in the Czech Republic. They started coming to our republic in 50's by agreements between Czechoslovakia and the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. Some of them stayed here after 1989 but most of immigrants after 1989 are the new incomers, mostly they come even with families. The reasons of their arrivals are most often better economic situation or better education. The vietnamese community living here is quite reserved so the media are often the only opportunity how to gain some information about this group. But the studies show that Vietnamese living in the Czech Republic get into the media above all in context of criminality. The aim of the survey, done by means of quantitative content analysis, is to chart the representation of the Vietnamese - in what way and contexts the chosen media write about them, eventually find out the fixed ways of presenting the Vietnamese or their stereotypes.

Traditional and Non-traditional Gender Role Stereotypes in Children’s Animated Films

Davidson, Rachael 01 December 2021 (has links)
As gender stereotypes could lead to adherence to rape myths later in life, it is important to study the potential development of gender role stereotypes. Based on the theoretical approach of Bandura’s social learning, this mixed methods study sought to expand the literature on children observing gender stereotypes through film viewing. A content analysis of verbal and body language of the highest grossing animated films between 2017-2019 was conducted. The results indicated that most main characters displayed both traditional and non-traditional gender role stereotypes, which is indicative of gender role flexibility. This shows promise that there could be a moderating affect with gender role flexibility, but further research is needed. However, the results found that there was no significant difference between the amount of gender role stereotypes across all the films. It was concluded that there is still a concern for children to be indoctrinated with traditional gender role stereotypes.

The mediating effect of gender on negotiated settlements

Dougherty, Deborah Sue 01 January 1992 (has links)
This study sought to update the literature on gender and negotiations, generate new information on settlements in negotiations, and provide information on gender and competitive negotiations. The negotiation section of the CAMCO competition was used to determine the influence of gender on negotiated settlement. Settlements did not differ based on the gender of the negotiators, except in scenario two in which it was found that male/male dyads negotiate a less distributive outcome than female/female or mixedsex dyads. In all scenarios, male/male dyads did not settle with an impasse more often than women, and male negotiators in a mixedsex dyad did not negotiate a more winning settlement than women negotiators. The results of the study imply that businesses can feel free to hire men and women negotiators based on their individual qualifications instead of based on their gender. The results also raise some concerns about the perception of differences between men and women based on outdated stereotypes.

Impact de l'ostracisme au sein d'un groupe d'individus de même sexe ou de sexe opposé sur les performances à plusieurs tâches stéréotypées selon le genre / Impact of ostracism in a same-sex vs. opposite-sex group on performances to several gender stereotyped tasks

Cursan, Anthony 08 December 2014 (has links)
With this research, we study the impact of ostracism (the feeling of social exclusion) onperformance on several stereotyped tasks, depending on the sex of the ostracism's source. Many researches showed that ostracism could lead to cognitive performance decrease(Baumeister, Twenge & Nuss, 2002). Some studies also pointed out that executing a task atthe same time as members of the opposite sex may cause a decrease in performance, if thetask is negatively stereotyped toward the targeted person (Inzlicht & Ben-Zeev, 2000).According to those studies, we were expecting ostracism would lead to performance decrease, and also that this effect (for a negatively stereotyped task) would be more pronounced, coming from members of the opposite sex. We tested this hypothesis with 4 experiments: 3 onfemale samples (using numeric task) and one on male sample (using an affective task). Wealso proposed a cumulated analysis of experiments conducted on female samples. Eventually,we didn't validate our hypothesis. On the contrary, we observed that only ostracism fromsame-sex persons led to performance decrease on a negatively stereotyped task. We proposeda number of leads to interpret the result we repeatedly highlighted.

An Exploration of Leadership Experiences and Challenges of Junior Female Managers in a Rural Hospital Environment, Vhembe District, Limpopo Province, South Africa

Machevele, Kulani Precious 21 September 2018 (has links)
MGS / Instittute of Gender and Youth Studies / In spite of the golden age of women which was ushered in by the Berlin Conference of 1995, women continue to be disadvantaged when it comes to public participation, both in the public and private sectors of the society. On a global scale even when they are well-qualified and in spite of the mainstreaming of more women into public life, women remain discriminated against in terms of accessing leadership positions. Despite their positive contribution, women continue to be significantly underrepresented in leadership positions. The aim of this study was to explore on the experiences and challenges of junior female managers at Tshilidzini Hospital in Vhembe District in Limpopo Province, South Africa. Qualitative method was used because it enabled the researcher to gain in-depth information about the challenges and experiences of junior female managers at Tshilidzini Hospital. This study is exploratory in nature. The population of this study consisted of junior female managers. Non-probability purposive sampling technique was used to select the research participants for this study. Ethical principles were considered, to ensure maximum protection of the research participants in this study. Face to face interviews were used to solicit information on the experiences and challenges of junior female managers at Tshilidzini Hospital. Thematic data analysis method was used in this study. The study found that gender discrimination is still widespread in South Africa, despite of the availability of many gender equality policies. The study recommends that policy makers, various government departments and law enforcement agencies makers should strengthen the gender machinery, to ensure that women are not denied an opportunity to take up leadership positions. / NRF

Quand les stéréotypes nous handicapent : étude de l'impact de l'intériorisation du stéréotype et de la conscience de la stigmatisation en fonction de la source de la menace / Detrimental effects of stereotypes : function of stereotype endorsement and stigma consciousness in the context of different sources of the threat

Anegmar, Souad 11 December 2015 (has links)
The main goal of this doctoral dissertation was to contribute to the understanding of the stereotype threat phenomenon. We analyzed the function of stereotype endorsement, stereotype internalization, and stigma consciousness in the context of different sources of the threat. Our aim was to test whether the impact of those three variables on the threat perception and participants’ performance is affected by the source of the threat. We run six experimental studies using multi-threat approach. First, we hypothesized that the stereotype endorsement and stereotype internalization are involved only in the context of self-as-source stereotype threats. The results of two experimental studies seem to confirm this prediction. Second, we hypothesized that stigma consciousness is involved only in the other-as-source stereotype threats context. Four experimental studies only partially confirmed this postulate. The studies reported in this doctoral dissertation enable to better understand the moderators variables involved in the stereotype threat phenomenon while using multi-threat approach.
