Práticas socioespaciais e espaços públicos em Guarapuava-PR /

Loboda, Carlos Roberto January 2008 (has links)
When society demands its right to the city, we have sought to emphasize which locales in urban space may contribute to develop a public space concept as a place for urban sociability. This investigation, held in Guarapuava, a city in Paraná State, had its focus on the process which produces urban space, taking into account its dynamic and relation to public spaces, by means of its intrinsic social-spatial practices. On the theoretic-conceptual point of view, we have tried to clarify the idea of public spaces, since this concept generalization has not helped to understand the real meaning of urban public spaces, considering the current circumstances. Based on this premise we have analyzed some public spaces perspectives and acceptations, considering theoretic-conceptual distinctions which permit classify certain city locales by attributing them the status of public space. This research aims also to contribute to city and urban studies, giving emphasis to the role of social-spatial practices as mediators of the multiple ways public spaces are used and appropriated, in other words, the elements responsible for the city constitution as a complex space with many locales and identities. After having performed field work (empirical procedure), related to theoretic-methodological reference, focused on analytic dimensions based on the ideas of centrality and accessibility, as well as on different social individuals' opinions, and trying to articulate dialectically all these procedures, we have sought to understand the way public spaces appear in city constitution processes by studying the expression of different social-spatial practices. Starting with these assumptions, public spaces have been analyzed as socially generated places, considering their general dynamic... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Doutor

Aspectos da formação do espaço urbano em Campinas: a região do Pólo 2 de Alta Tecnologia / Aspects of the formation of urban space in Campinas: the region of the High Technology Pole II

André Pinotti 29 May 2009 (has links)
Urban transformations take place in a fast and aggressive way, by the integration of historical processes like the formation of a global economy and the adoption, totally accepted by society, of a new informational way of economic production and management. The industrial metropolis, as locus of production, does not respond, to contemporary spatial demands. The new urban space requires completely new conceptual bases, related, fundamentally, to quality and efficiency of its infrastructures (both physically and digitally) and of its urban pieces. They form not only an architectural interrelated system, but also a network of cities thoroughly interconnected. This present study is about these contemporary urban manifestations, which begin to take shape in a specific piece of the urban space in the northeast axis of the city of Campinas. The High-tech Polis presents some characteristics of a new regional centrality, which justifies this work. The main objective is to verify the existence of a new pattern of urbanization, according to the contemporary theories.

A função estratégica do assistencialismo na produção do espaço na metrópole / The strategic function of Social Assistance in the production of space in the Metropolis

Cardoso, Danilo Lopes 18 December 2014 (has links)
The urban space is an increasingly central element in the reproduction of capitalist accumulation, because, besides its production is currently set as the preferred time of completion of the accumulation of financial capital, it generates the forms and structures needed to promote or even generate an economy and is also architected to induce behaviors and practices in order to close itself everyday, scheduling it. Thus, the production of space is surrounded by numerous strategies to occur. In this paper we analyze one of them, welfarism, that in a very small way, and play a key role in the processes of spatial restructuring, can still play the role of organizing the sociability of new urban space produced.

On site : art, performance and the urban social housing estate in contemporary governance and the cultural economy

Bell, Charlotte Sophie Louise January 2014 (has links)
This thesis questions how sub-disciplines in theatre and performance negotiate ‘sitespecificity’ as an aesthetic practice and tool of urban governance that ‘sees’ and ‘performs’ social housing estates. As a practice that, predominantly, takes place beyond conventional performance spaces, applied theatre might be a paradigmatic form of socially engaged sitespecific activity. However, scholarship on the ‘social turn’ more readily cites Bourriaud’s ‘relational aesthetics’, or Bishop and Jackson’s critiques of ‘social practice’, which emerged in gallery and visual arts contexts. The ‘social turn’ poses problems for scholarly relations between ‘social practice’, ‘applied theatre’, the cultural economy and urban governance. I draw on socio-legal scholar Valverde’s ‘seeing like a city’, theatre scholar McKinnie’s ‘performing like a city’ and cultural economy as a theoretical framework, developing McKinnie’s concerns with ‘cultural equity’, and Harvey’s use of ‘fixed capital’ and ‘consumption fund’ in my analysis of relations between cultural and social realms. Consequently, this project hopes to contribute to an emerging area of research between socio-legal urbanism and performance studies, complicating ‘site-specificity’ as a descriptive category. Over five chapters I analyse site-specific works about estates staged in Lambeth and Southwark (inner-city London boroughs) since 2008. First, I examine relations between site-specificity and estate regeneration: the representations of overhead walkways in Delahay’s The Westbridge (2011) and Cotterrell’s Slipstream (2011) and the estate as ‘ruin’ in two Artangel interventions, Seizure (2008) and Pyramid (n.d.). I then shift to issues raised by legal and social boundaries in governance; I examine SLG’s partnerships with a neighbouring estate and ‘issue-based’ plays in two examples of theatre for young people. The final chapter draws out the project’s wider thematic concerns: the aesthetic implications of pedagogy and funding bodies on imaginings of site. This project calls attention to the complex cultural, socio-legal and economic structures that shape our cities, and the degrees to which they might be repurposed or re-imagined.

O lugar dos pobres na cidade de Campinas-SP: questões a partir da urbanização da ocupação do Parque Oziel, Jardim Monte Cristo e Gleba B / The place of poor people in the city of Campinas-SP: issues about the urbanization process generated by the occupation of Parque Oziel, Jardim Monte Cristo and Gleba B

Ghilardi, Flávio Henrique 30 May 2012 (has links)
This dissertation proposes a discussion about the formation processes of the place of poor people in the city of Campinas - SP, by analyzing the formation, consolidation and urbanization of the following urban occupations: Parque Oziel, Jardim Monte Cristo and Gleba B. The current area that comprises such quarters was consolidated by the occupation, in early 1997, of an empty area on the margins of highway Santos Dumont (kilometer 76), located in the southwestern area of Campinas city. In recent years, the Municipality of Campinas started the urbanization process of this area, by taking measures of tenure regularization, provision of infrastructure services and urban improvements. Therefore, based on the formation and consolidation of such an illegal and irregular area, the dissertation raises issues about the formation processes of the place of poor people in the city of Campinas. Our theoretical framework takes as analytical perspective references about the struggle to right to the city, the political project of the urban reform and the (re)configuration of the urban issue in the contemporary Brazilian cities.

Imagining Brussels : memory, mobility and space in Francophone diasporic writing

Arens, Sarah January 2017 (has links)
This thesis examines literary representations of the city of Brussels in Francophone diasporic writing. Drawing on and exploring the usefulness of memory and trauma studies, postcolonial theory, and spatial studies in a Belgian context, this thesis reads six novels, spanning a contemporary period from 1985 to 2011, by Francophone writers, who themselves or whose parents originate from countries with a history of Belgian and French colonialism: Leïla Houari’s Zeida de nulle part (1985), Pie Tshibanda’s Un fou noir au pays des Blancs (1999), Saber Assal’s A l’ombre des gouttes (2000), José Tshisungu wa Tshisungu’s La Flamande de la gare du Nord (2001), Mina Oualdlhadj’s Ti t’appelles Aїcha, pas Jouzifine (2008) and Patrick François’s La dernière larme du lac Kivu (2011). In doing so, this thesis investigates the multiple ways in which these writers imagine and construct the urban space of Brussels through intersecting transnational trajectories and histories of violence. By analysing how they ‘write’ Brussels, the very architecture and landscape of which are clearly marked by colonialism and labour migration, this thesis offers a critical exploration of how experiences and memories of displacement and exile shape the perception of the urban space in these texts. I argue in particular that these writers either recode certain urban spaces or create new ones in order to construct narratives of marginalisation and belonging. Finally, this thesis aims to join the emerging discussion of ethnic-minority writing in Belgium by providing an understanding of the ambiguous role of Brussels as a postcolonial metropolis and post-war destination for labour migration, while seemingly remaining a peripheral location for Francophone literary production in a cultural sphere that still gravitates towards Paris.

Desenho urbano e criminalidade: uma análise para as regiões do Largo da Batata e Largo Nossa Senhora do Ó - São Paulo, SP / Urban drawing and criminality: an analysis for the regions of Largo da Batata and Largo Nossa Senhora do Ó - São Paulo, SP

Souza Neto, Cyro de 04 February 2019 (has links)
Brazilian society has experienced a process of accelerated urban growth. Allied to this, and given their respective local realities, it was possible to verify the emergence of various social, economic and environmental problems in the agglomerations in the country. In particular, the issues of urban security stand out. According to contributions from different research areas, regions with high crime rates are not distributed randomly in the city. Thus, it is possible to argue that some of the characteristics that define the urban area can influence the occurrence of the criminal act. The argument is that urban design as well as social and demographic composition is relevant factors to study crime. In this sense, this dissertation analyze the dynamics of crime and its relation to the characteristics of urban areas of the Largo da Batata and Largo Nossa Senhora do Ó, São Paulo- SP, and then carry out a comparative study of urban conditions, which includes the socioeconomic. Thus, we try to understand the crime with another perspective, taking a local and specific approach. With regard to methodology, it is proposed to carry out an empirical study, based on in loco visits, trying to identify how the existence of urban crime relates to urban issues. This study will also have as a foundation historical, geographical, social and economic analyzes. The justification for studying these regions is due to their urban characteristics, relevance to the city of São Paulo and peculiarities, such as the characteristics of the buildings, land use and movement of the regions.

Disturbances in the Metropolis: The Crowd in Modernist London, 1848-1900

McKean, Matthew 20 July 2009 (has links)
Thesis (Ph.D, History) -- Queen's University, 2009-07-20 14:36:15.104 / The thesis is an interdisciplinary history of the crowd in late-Victorian London. It examines the crowd using novels, newspapers, and periodicals, Home Office, Metropolitan Police, and Parliamentary records, and the personal papers of politicians and city officials. The thesis focuses on riots, demonstrations, and processions beginning in 1848 through to the Trafalgar Square mle in 1887 as well as the way novelists imagined the crowd at the fin de sicle. In the process, it re-evaluates the urban environment that gave rise to the crowd and it explores the crowds influence on space, geography, and movement. The thesis rethinks crowd activity after mid century as the coming together of crowds and new concerns with modernity. It brings together the Marxist tradition of interpreting the crowd with writing on cultural and intellectual history as well as sociological and geographical theory in order to assess the crowds experience at street level. It aims to expand the traditional crowd model to include the spatial attitudes and practices that shaped the crowds relationship to the city and the citys relationship to the crowd. The thesis shows that the crowd, through its struggle for space, was not only a condition of the city, but one of the compelling features of urban modernity after mid century. The thesis traces the crowd in London in six chapters. An introductory chapter first locates the crowd historiographically. Chapter two focuses on the extent to which Londons improvement project mobilized the crowd. Chapter three describes the crowds battle for private space, after huge swathes of the urban population were dis-housed, and the challenges this posed to spatial ordering. Chapter four examines the battle for public space in the form of the radical political crowds occupation and production of space, between 1848-1868, as well as the states heavy-handed response. Chapter five describes the culmination of earlier issues in Trafalgar Square in 1887. Finally, chapter six explores the way novelists imagined the crowd in late-Victorian slum fiction. / Ph.D

Memory travels : death, belonging and architecture

Jassal, Lakhbir 11 1900 (has links)
This thesis examines the tension and cooperation between politics of conformity and difference that are embedded in urban spaces, such as burials and mosques in Britain and beyond. It examines the social, political and cultural ideologies and complexities of the historical past and present by focusing on death, belonging and architecture. It will show that the past has become re-imagined and embedded into the postcolonial concrete present. Thereby, carving out new national traditions and memories that travel through time and space. The study suggests that urban space, although often ignored is important not only for our everyday consciousness and social realities, but is pivotal to examine and study especially in relation to national policies, such as “multiculturalism”.
