Wayfinding – för den som gått vilse : En studie om att finna sin väg i en likformig flervåningsbyggnad

This study is about the complexity that is present in wayfinding and wayshowing in a multilevel building where the floors are uniform and how this problem can be solved. Åva gymnasium is a municipal upper secondary school whose facilities span over multiple levels, many of which look the same. The uniformity of the building contributes to difficulty in navigating the building. It is this practical problem that is at the root of this study. The purpose of the study is to clarify the interior navigation at Åva gymnasium, thus facilitating for pupils and teachers in everyday life. In addition, the hope is that the work can provide a deeper understanding of how wayfinding theories can be applied in a complex multilevel building. The study connects several different aspects of wayfinding and wayshowing. By analysing theories of wayfinding and various aspects of this subject, such as signing, distinction and wayshowing the comprehension of what can be improved has been formed. An increased understanding of the space and the problem has been achieved through the following methods; observation, site analysis and notation analysis. The methods showed that there is a problem that is based on the fact that the floor plan in the building is uniform and little work has been done to change this The result of the study is visualized through a design proposal. With the help of clearer distinctions between the different levels of the building and simple but efficient signage, the environment may become more structured and easily understood. / Denna studie handlar om komplexiteten som finns i vägvisning och orienterbarhet i en likformig flervåningsbyggnad och hur detta problem kan åtgärdas. Åva gymnasium är en kommunal gymnasieskola vars lokaler är förlagd över flera våningsplan, flertalet av dem är likformiga. De likartade våningsplanen bidrar till att det är svårt att orientera sig i byggnaden. Det är detta praktiska problem som ligger till grund för studien. Syftet med studien är att förtydliga navigationen på Åva gymnasium och därmed underlätta för elever och lärare i vardagen. Utöver detta är förhoppningen att arbetet kan ge en djupare förståelse för hur wayfindingteorier kan tillämpas i en komplex flervångsbyggnad. I studien kopplas flera olika aspekter av vägvisning och orienterbarhet samman. Genom att undersöka teorier om wayfinding och olika aspekter inom detta ämne, så som skyltning, särskiljning och wayshowing har en bild av vad som går att förbättra bildats. En ökad förståelse för platsen och problematiken har getts genom metoderna observation, platsanalys och notationsanalys. Metoderna visade på att det är en problematik som grundar sig i att våningsplanen i byggnaden ser likadana ut och lite arbete har gjorts för att förändra detta. Resultatet av studien visualiseras genom ett designförslag där vägvisningen har förtydligats för att understödja orienterbarheten i miljön. Med hjälp av särskiljning av våningsplanen och enkel men effektiv skyltning blir miljön mer strukturerad och lättförstådd.

Orientação espacial e características urbanas

Essa pesquisa investiga a influência das variáveis físico-espaciais associadas à orientação nos espaços urbanos, a partir da percepção de grupos que diferem quanto ao gênero e grau de familiaridade com o espaço. O objetivo central é fornecer subsídios teóricos que possam auxiliar nas diretrizes de desenho urbano, de modo a garantir a maior facilidade na orientação espacial nos espaços urbanos, além de contribuir para um ambiente urbano de maior qualidade. Adotase a cidade de Santa Maria (RS) como objeto de estudo por constituir, principalmente, uma área onde a concentração de indivíduos com diferentes níveis de familiaridade com o espaço é significativa. Da mesma forma, por possuir espaços heterogêneos em termos das variáveis associadas aos aspectos físico-espaciais que tornam pertinente a comparação entre eles. Os métodos de coleta e análise de dados fazem parte dos utilizados na área de pesquisa Ambiente e Comportamento. Os dados foram obtidos a partir de duas etapas: (1) levantamento de arquivo, entrevistas e mapas mentais, e (2) levantamento físico, questionário e mapas mentais, sendo esta etapa precedida de uma tarefa envolvendo orientação espacial isto é, a realização de um percurso no Centro da cidade. Os resultados dessa investigação demonstram que existem relações evidentes entre os níveis de facilidade de orientação e as variáveis físico-espaciais associadas às características urbanas dos espaços. Primeiramente, fica evidente que a presença de marcos referenciais contribui positivamente para facilitar a orientação espacial. Para determinados espaços, a presença de sinalização, também tende a explicar os níveis de facilidade de orientação. Ademais, os resultados revelam que as medidas sintáticas, tais como, níveis de integração, Relativa Assimetria Real e inteligibilidade são consideradas importantes para as análises sobre navegação no espaço urbano. Espera-se que os dados encontrados despertem o interesse pelo desenvolvimento de outros estudos sobre a relação entre orientação espacial e características urbanas. / This research investigates the influence of the physic-spatial variables associated to orientation in urban spaces, from the perception of groups that differ in gender and degree of familiarity to the space. The central purpose is to provide theoretic knowledge that can suppose urban design guidelines, thus guaranteeing greater easiness at wayfinding in urban spaces, as well as contributing for a higher quality urban atmosphere. It is adopted as study object the city of Santa Maria (RS) for constituting, mainly, an area where the individuals' concentration with different levels of familiarity with the space is significant. Likewise, for containing heterogeneous spaces in terms of the variables associated to the physic-spatial aspects that render the comparison among them pertinent. The collecting methods and analyses of data are part of those used in the field of the research of the Environment and Behavior. The data were obtained through two stages: (1) field survey, interviews and mental maps, and (2) physical survey, questionnaire and mental maps, preceded by a task involving wayfinding, which means the accomplishment of a course Downtown. The results of this investigation show that there are quite evident relations between the easiness of orientation levels and the physic-spatial variables associated to the urban features of the spaces. Initially, it is evident that the presence of marks contributes positively to facilitate the spatial orientation. For certain spaces, the presence of signage also tends to explain the levels of orientation easiness. Moreover, the results reveal that the syntactic measures, such as integration levels, Relative Asymmetry, Real Relative Asymmetry and intelligibility, are considered important for the analyses of navigation in the urban space. It is expected that the found data rouse the interest on the development of other studies about the relationship between spatial orientation and urban characteristics.

Det finns olika variationer av vägledningshjälpmedel som hjälper spelaren att navigera sig i en 3D-omgivning. I denna kvalitativa studie kommer det undersökas hur spår, ljud och markeringar som vägledningshjälpmedel kan stödja en spelare i en 3D-labyrint. Genom att undersöka de tre vägledningshjälpmedlen skapades en prototyp där de tre vägledningshjälpmedlen separerades i tre olika labyrinter. Respondenterna som deltog i studien spelade igenom de tre labyrinterna med och utan vägledningshjälpmedel för att kunna undersöka hur de stödjer respondenterna under spelsessionen. Data samlades in med hjälp av stimulated recall metoden och semi-strukturerade intervjuer. Insamlad data analyserades med hjälp av Empirisk fenomenologisk psykologi (EPP) metoden. Resultatet som uppstod från analysen presenterade respondenternas individuella upplevelse samt de fyra övergripande teman som sammanställdes från data. Sammanfattningsvis indikerade resultaten att spåret var den optimalaste vägledningshjälpmedlet, däremot delade både ljud och markeringar samma egenskaper som vägledningsshjälpmedel. Dessutom bildade respondenterna spatialt minne med hjälp av unika landmärken, samt utgick respondenterna från egna vägledningsstrategier när de tre hjälpmedlen inte var tillgängliga. / There are different types of wayfinding aids that help the player navigate through a 3D environment. This qualitative study investigates how breadcrumb trails, sounds, and markers as wayfinding aids can support a player in a 3D maze. First, the researchers created a prototype to examine the three wayfinding aids and placed them into three different mazes. Then, the respondents who participated in the study played through those three mazes with and without wayfinding aids to investigate how they supported the respondents during the game session. Next, data were collected using the stimulated recall method and semi-structured interviews. Finally, the collected data were analyzed using the Empirical phenomenological psychology (EPP) method. The results that occurred from the analysis showed the respondent's individual experiences and the four overall themes that emerged from the data. In summary, the results indicated that breadcrumb trails were the most optimal wayfinding aid. However, both sound and markers shared the same characteristics as wayfinding aids. In addition, the respondents developed spatial memory with the help of unique landmarks and used other wayfinding strategies when the wayfinding aids were unavailable.

Is it important that a player can navigate easily through a level? To get the answer ten participants were tested during a short play-session of a game made for the study. By looking at prior research, themes could be found that were all common. To learn the player to recognize what a goal looks like, to get the player to understand what the goal is. That the player can navigate to the goal and that the level should have flow is also important. This study shows that what earlier research suggests seems to have merit. Of all participants that played the game, almost everyone that played where navigational techniques were implemented spoke of how they felt certain in where to go.
