Fighting Stereotypes and Empowering Roma Youth through Participatory Film : A Case Study Based on a Participatory Film Project Conducted in the Roma Community in Glasgow, Scotland

The Roma community has long been subjected to negative stereotypes and misrepresentations in the public sphere, leading to discrimination and prejudice. Roma youth in Glasgow, Scotland, supported by the Roma-led organisation Romano Lav, have taken an active role in challenging these negative portrayals through a participatory film project. One of the aims of this research is to explore how young Roma filmmakers are utilising cinematic storytelling to challenge harmful stereotyping of their community. The other one is to investigate the impact of participatory video projects on the film creators and their community. The study fits within the field of Communication for Development by addressing the transformative and empowering aspect of a film project. It aims to fill a gap in knowledge regarding self-representations of Roma and the role of participatory video in their community accounting for cultural specificity. It also adds an insight into the Romani youth’s attitudes and values, contributing this way to a broader knowledge of Scottish Roma while suggesting solutions for social change. By employing qualitative research methodologies, critical visual analysis and interviews, the study seeks to understand the experiences, perspectives, and motivations of the teenagers involved in the project. It is grounded in Paolo Freire’s theories linking participation and empowerment and Stuart Hall’s constructivist approach to representation. The analysis finds that the Roma youth use personal narratives, cultural traditions, and everyday experiences to construct new representations that challenge stereotypes. Moreover, it highlights the transformative impact of participatory video on the empowerment of the participants, its influence on strengthening communal identity and social bonds, and the film’s educational role in building a more equitable society. This study found that participatory video harnesses great potential for Roma self-representation and empowerment.

Passar jag in? : Nyanlända ungdomars möte med idrottsundervisning

The present study deals with newly arrived young people’s perceptions of Physical Education and Health (PEH). Many in this group are not familiar with the culturally specific elements of Swedish PEH. The study highlights the meanings they attach to participation in PEH and the consequences on their participation in PEH. The study is based on qualitative interviews with six young immigrants in a medium sized city in Sweden. They have come from different countries, have different religions and are of different genders. The results have been interpreted using Dewey’s pragmatic transactional approach. Some results from the study are that school PEH is an important activity for the interviewees offering opportunities, new contacts, improvement of language and other skills. Their narratives indicate that their physical health does not constitute a limitation but rather an opportunity to participate in PEH. On the other hand, certain aspects of their psychological and social health may sometimes constitute limitations to their participation in PEH. The girls are affected both by the market forces norm that tells that they should be nice and sweet and of their own cultural norm that tells that they should not be too physically active. It is easier for the boys than the girls in the study to participate in sports both in school and during leisure time. On the basis of the results of the study and of previous research, the discussion suggests ways of facilitating this group’s participation in PEH, the important point being that they should be treated as individuals. / Andelen nyanlända ungdomar i Sverige ökar och prognoser visar att andelen kommer att öka framgent. Skolan är en viktig plats för dessa ungdomar och av betydelse för dem att inkluderas i det svenska samhället. Ungdomarnas inkludering i samhället är viktig att förhålla sig till där undervisningen är en viktig del. Undervisningen i Idrott och Hälsa har tillsammans med övrig skolverksamhet ett ansvar att välkomna denna grupp. Fysisk aktivitet i olika former har en stor möjlighet att göra det på ett positivt sätt då rörelse och idrott är en global företeelse där språket är av mindre betydelse. Fysisk aktivitet är ett globalt språk som om det presenteras på ett tillgängligt sätt kan vara en brygga för denna grupp att inkluderas i samhället. När jag inom ramen för Forskarskolan Idrott och hälsas didaktik fick chansen att skriva en licentiatuppsats blev valet naturligt. Jag har arbetat 40 år som idrottslärare och har under de senaste åren undervisat nyanlända ungdomar i åldern 16-20 år. Jag har under den tid jag undervisat gruppen funderat över hur jag ska planera och genomföra undervisningen för att underlätta gruppens möte med ämnet. Därför kändes det relevant att göra en praktiknära studie som belyser nyanländas möte med idrottsundervisningen. Jag har intervjuat sex stycken nyanlända ungdomar i åldern 17-19 år gamla som har skilda uppväxtförhållanden. Deras berättelser tar upp tiden i hemlandet, deras flykt och mötet med det nya landet, skolan och idrottsundervisningen. Jag har analyserat och tolkat deras berättelser som har fokus på deras tidigare och nuvarande relation till fysisk aktivitet och undersöker på det sättet deras möte med idrottsundervisningen här i Sverige som är studiens huvudsyfte. Då det är ofrånkomligt att ungdomarna även berättar generellt hur det är att komma som nyanländ, redovisas även det i studien. Resultatet från studien visar att det finns några aktiviteter i ämnet som ungdomarna har svårare att förhålla sig till.  Det är framförallt friluftsaktiviteter, vinteraktiviteter, simning dans samt att förstå begreppet hälsa. Bollspel, lekar och styrketräning innebär sällan några begränsningar vad gäller deras deltagande. Flickorna ser en begränsning i att delta tillsammans med pojkarna vid vissa aktiviteter men vill ändå idrotta tillsammans med dem. Men med förbehållet att pojkarna ska viss större förståelse och att aktiviteterna ska organiseras så att alla känner sig trygga. Ungdomarna har inga fysiska begränsningar att delta men det finns psykiska och sociala faktorer som gör att det ibland kan vara svårt för dem att delta. Samtidigt ser ungdomarna en mängd möjligheter i sitt deltagande. En möjlighet till sociala kontakter, träna sitt språk, lära sig nya kroppsliga färdigheter, att sköta sin hälsa att få leva för ”stunden” och att få ett betyg som tillsammans med andra betyg kan rendera till möjligheter för vidare studier.    Praktiska konsekvenser av slutsatser. Utifrån slutsatserna kopplat till rådande kursplaner ger jag exempel på hur idrottsundervisningen för denna grupp kan organiseras och planeras för att om möjligt inkludera denna grupp av elever på ett ”välkomnande” sätt. Detta för att inte bara hantera begränsningarna utan också stärka möjligheterna. Konsekvenser i ett större perspektiv. Det finns olikhetar att ta hänsyn till men också likheter oavsett uppväxtmiljö som är väl värda att lyfta vid möten. Det är lätt att se problem när människor med olika bakgrund och kultur möts men nog så viktigt att se det tillskott det innebär att lyssna till andras ”röster”.

The purpose of this study is to investigate how unaccompanied children have contributed to or affected Swedish society, and how society's reception has affected these children in 2015. This study investigates the situation of unaccompanied children in Sweden in 2015, a year marked by an increased flow of asylum seekers and concerns that came with receiving and integrating these children. The project aims to shed light on the complicated variations in reception of unaccompanied children as well as their impact and contribution on Swedish society. The study conducts interviews with unaccompanied children and representatives from Swedish society using qualitative semi-structured interviews.   The result showed that unaccompanied children in 2015 have influenced and contributed to Swedish society. By working, paying taxes and also participating in society's various social systems. It turned out that society has influenced the children both positively and negatively. Freedom affected them positively and authorities such as the Swedish Migration Agency have affected them negatively. Unaccompanied children have shown gratitude to Swedish society despite several shortcomings that existed since their arrival in 2015. The children had been given great opportunities for development such as education, freedom and a safe life.

The purpose of this study has been to describe and analyze the significance of cooperation among qualified personnel in School, Social services, Police and Leisure services (SSPF) in addressing substance use problems among children and young people at risk, along with potential challenges. The study explores two primary questions: 1. How do professionals engaged in SSPF-collaboration perceive their work with children and young people at risk of substance use problems? 2. What opportunities and challenges do these professionals identify in collaboration? Furthermore, qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight SSPF professionals within two different municipalities. The study draws upon Ecological systems theory by Urie Bronfenbrenner, the Dynamic Cooperation Model for the welfare system, and critical perspectives on cooperation by Chris Huxham. Finding suggest that the SSPF-work often varies depending on municipality size, with individual professional presence and commitment significantly influencing collaboration’s effectiveness. Furthermore, the results show disparities in working methods, interpretive frameworks, and responsibilities among the different SSPF professions that can lead to dilemmas and tensions in the collaboration process.

Объект исследования: психологическое благополучие и смысложизненные ориентации. Предметом исследования стала взаимосвязь смысложизненных ориентаций и психологического благополучия молодежи в возрасте 27-30 лет. Магистерская диссертация состоит из введения, двух глав, заключения, списка литературы (82 источника) и приложения, включающего в себя бланки применявшихся методик и подробные расчеты. Объем магистерской диссертации 121 страница, на которых размещены 38 рисунков и 42 таблицы. Во введении раскрывается актуальность проблемы исследования, степень изученности, ставятся цель и задачи исследования, определяются объект и предмет исследования, формулируются гипотезы, указываются методы и эмпирическая база, а также практическая значимость работы. В первой главе рассмотрен феномен смысложизненных ориентаций в гуманитарных науках, работах отечественных и зарубежных психологов, раскрыто понятие психологического благополучия и проанализированы психологические особенности молодежи. Выводы по первой главе представляют собой итоги по изучению теоретического материала. Во второй главе описаны методы и ход эмпирического исследования смысложизненных ориентаций и психологического благополучия молодых людей, представлено описание организации и методов проведенного исследования и результатов, полученных по всем использованным методикам: «Тесту смысложизненных ориентаций» Д.А. Леонтьева, опроснику «Шкала психологического благополучия» К. Рифф, шкале «Удовлетворенность жизнью» Э. Динера. Приведены и проанализированы результаты исследования и представлен корреляционный и сравнительный анализ полученных данных. Выводы по главе 2 включают в себя основные результаты эмпирического исследования. В заключении в обобщенном виде изложены результаты теоретической и эмпирической частей работы, а также выводы по выдвинутым гипотезам, обоснована практическая значимость исследования и описаны возможные перспективы дальнейшей разработки данной проблематики. / Object of the study: psychological well-being and meaning-life orientations. The subject of the study was the relationship between meaning-life orientations and psychological well-being of young people aged 27-30 years old. The master's thesis consists of an introduction, two chapters, a conclusion, a list of literature (82 sources) and an appendix, including forms of applied methods and detailed calculations. The volume of the master's thesis is 121 pages with 38 figures and 42 tables. The introduction reveals the relevance of the research problem, the degree of study, sets the goal and objectives of the study, defines the object and subject of the study, formulates hypotheses, specifies methods and empirical basis, as well as the practical significance of the work. The first chapter considers the phenomenon of meaning-life orientations in the humanities, works of domestic and foreign psychologists, reveals the concept of psychological well-being and analyzes the psychological characteristics of young people. The conclusions of the first chapter represent the results of the study of theoretical material. The second chapter describes the methods and course of the empirical study of meaning-life orientations and psychological well-being of young people, presents a description of the organization and methods of the conducted research and the results obtained by all the methods used: "Test of meaning-life orientations" by D.A. Leontyev, questionnaire "Scale of psychological well-being" by K. Ryff, scale "Satisfaction with life" by E. Diener. The results of the study are presented and analyzed and the correlation and comparative analysis of the obtained data is presented. Conclusions on Chapter 2 include the main results of the empirical study. The conclusion summarizes the results of the theoretical and empirical parts of the work, as well as conclusions on the hypotheses, substantiates the practical significance of the study and describes possible prospects for further development of this issue.

”En plats för att samla kraft” : En kvalitativ intervjustudie om separatistiska mötesplatser för unga HBTQ-personer / ”A place to gather strength” : A qualitative interview study on separatist meeting points for LGBTQ youth

Syftet med denna studie är att bidra till en ökad medvetenhet och förståelse inom socialt arbete för unga HBTQ-personer som samt HBTQ-separatistiska mötesplatser. Studien bygger på nio kvalitativa, semistrukturerade intervjuer med arrangörer av och deltagare från sex separatistiska mötesplatser i Stockholm, Göteborg och Malmö. Materialet har bearbetats genom tematisk analys och analyserats med hjälp av kritisk och feministisk teoribildning med ett intersektionellt perspektiv. Studien visar att separatistiska mötesplatser har stor betydelse för deltagarnas psykosociala utveckling. Många har erfarenheter utav diskriminering och exkludering på offentliga platser. Flera upplever att minoritetsstress påverkar deras vardag och mentala hälsa samt styr vilka platser de väljer att vistas på. Mötesplatsen beskrivs av respondenterna som en resurs för återhämtning, social stimulans, gemenskap och identitetsskapande. En utmaning är att mötesplatser kan missa att nå vissa ungdomar beroende på faktorer som geografisk placering, rummets tydliga inriktning och den mångfald som finns representerad i rummet. De flesta respondenter var överens om att trygghet inte kan garanteras och menar på att skapandet av trygghet kräver ett kontinuerligt arbete för att förbättra förutsättningarna. / The purpose of this study is to contribute to increased awareness and understanding of young LGBTQ individuals and LGBTQ-separatist activities within the field of social work. The study is based on nine qualitative, semi-structured interviews with participants and organizers from six LGBTQ-separatist meeting points for young people located in Stockholm, Malmö and Gothenburg. The material has been processed through thematic analysis and examined using critical and feminist theory with an intersectional perspective. The findings indicate that separatist meeting points and activities are of great importance for the psychosocial development of the participants. The majority of the participants expressed experiences of discrimination and exclusion in public spaces. Several participants reported that minority stress impacts their daily lives and mental health and influencing their choices of places to frequent. Respondents described the meetings points as resources for social interaction, community building, identity formation and recovery. A challenge identified is that these meeting points may not reach all LGBTQ youth in need due to factors such as geographical location, the specific label of the space and the diversity represented in the space. Most respondents concurred that ensuring safety cannot be guaranteed; it requires ongoing efforts to create the best possible conditions for safety.

Sweden is often seen as a welfare state where children can grow up in safe circumstances. However, social support for children who are at risk of social exclusion has been shown to be lacking. Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) is an alternative intervention within the field of social work, though it is still in its infancy. Existing research evidence suggests that AAT can generate positive results, especially for individuals who have low engagement in other types of treatment. This study examines how AAT is used within the field of social work with children and young people. Seven professionals who employ AAT in their work with children and young people were interviewed. The interviews were interpreted through Antonovsky’s theory Sense of Coherence (SOC). Results show that the animal is seen to increase motivation for the child to partake in the treatment. The therapeutic alliance that is created through the presence of the animal can be helpful in increasing the child’s SOC and the surrounding environment can also play a significant part.

Att vara eller inte vara, socialsekreterare : En studie av personalomsättningens orsaker och konsekvenser inom socialtjänstens barn-och ungdomsenheter / To be or not to be, social secretary : A study on the causes and consequences ofstaff turnover in social services' child and youth units

For many years, it has been reported that the turnover rate among staff in the child and youth services units of social services has been very high. Increased documentation requirements and an imbalance between time and resources create stress and anxiety, which has resulted in many social workers taking sick leave or choosing to resign from their positions. The persistence of these issues within the organization is confirmed by requests from professionals in southern Sweden, indicating that this topic requires further study. By understanding and identifying the positive and negative factors affecting staff turnover in child and youth services units, the current study aims to provide insights that can guide development and contribute to a more attractive work environment. The study was conducted using a qualitative research method, and nine semi-structured interviews with social workers from four municipalities in southern Sweden provided the empirical material upon which the results are based. Three main themes were identified and analyzed using Herzberg's two-factor theory and Hochschild's emotion theory. The results indicate that organizational factors, such as reorganizations, often lead to an imbalance between demands and resources, which can lead to social workers choosing to leave their position. Interpersonal interactions are another significant factor affecting social workers' job-related well-being. This includes both the motivation they derive from interacting with clients and the collegial support needed to perform an emotionally demanding job. The individual emotional labor performed by social workers is essential for maintaining a desired distance between work and personal life. It is obvious that these individuals have chosen to dedicate their professional lives to supporting and helping other people. However, the study's findings show that professional experience, mental resilience, and collegial support are necessary to prevent the cost from becoming too high. / Under många år har det rapporterats om att personalomsättningen inom socialtjänstens barn- och ungdomsenheter varit mycket hög. Ökade dokumentationskrav samt obalans mellan tid och resurser skapar stress och oro, vilket i sin tur resulterat i att många socialsekreterare blivit sjukskrivna eller valt att avsluta sin tjänst. Att problematiken inom organisationen kvarstår bekräftas genom det önskemål som inkommit från verksamhetsfältet i södra Sverige om att ämnet bör studeras ytterligare. Genom att skapa förståelse för-och identifiera vilka positiva och negativa faktorer som påverkar personalomsättningen inom socialtjänstens barn- och ungdomsenheter, syftar den aktuella studien till att bidra med insikter som kan vägleda utvecklingen och bidra till en mer attraktiv arbetsmiljö. Studien har genomförts med kvalitativ forskningsmetod, och nio stycken semistrukturerade intervjuer med socialsekreterare från fyra kommuner i södra Sverige har gett det empiriska material som resultatet bygger på. Tre huvudteman har identifierats och analyserats med grund i Herzbergs tvåfaktorsteori och Hochschilds emotionsteori. Resultatet visar på att organisatoriska faktorer som omorganiseringar ofta leder till obalans mellan krav och resurser, vilket i förlängningen kan få socialsekreterarna att avsluta sin tjänst. De mellanmänskliga mötena har visat sig ha stor betydelse för socialsekreterarnas yrkesrelaterade välbefinnande. Det handlar både om den drivkraft som de finner i mötet med klienter men även det betydande kollegiala stöd som krävs för att utföra ett emotionellt krävande yrke. Att socialsekreterarna dessutom utför ett individuellt emotionellt arbete är av stor vikt för att hålla önskvärd distans mellan arbete och privatliv. Det är tydligt att det här är människor som har valt att viga sina yrkesliv åt att stötta och hjälpa andra, dock visar studiens resultat att det krävs yrkeserfarenhet, mental styrka och kollegialt stöd för att  priset inte ska bli för högt.

The thesis focuses on the ways of making the Bible accessible und understandable to young people. It deals with the methods and techniques which could be used for this purpose. The possible application of music, as one of the approaches to the Bible study, is explained in more detail. In the first part the author presents the theoretical concepts, which make obvious, why it is so important to meet with young for the purpose of reading and studying the Bible. Furthermore, the basic set of information necessary for the organization of such a meeting is introduced. In the second part the author offers theoretical instructions how to use the particular methods and techniques for the Bible meeting. Subsequently the practical application of these particular methods and techniques is described. In the third part the musical theory and particular musical methods and techniques in relation to the Bible meeting are dealt with.

The use of mobile phones by Generation Y students at two universities in the city of Johannesburg

The main purpose of this study was to examine the use of mobile phones by Generation Y students in the city of Johannesburg in order to increase understanding of this segment's consumer behaviour. Generation Y is an important market segment in that it is making more independent purchase-related decisions and has a large amount of disposable income. The primary data for this study is based on focus group interviews and a quantitative study of a sample of 200 Generation Y tertiary students. Some of the findings are as follows: * Generation Y's use of mobile phones: Generation Y respondents have owned a mobile phone for between three to five years; the majority own Nokia mobile phones, are on prepaid packages and are not big spenders on airtime; furthermore, SMS is seen as the most cost-effective way to communicate. * Competition in the mobile phone market: The perceptions of this segment are that Vodacom is the "cool" operator, MTN is the most "expensive" network operator and Cell C is "cheap and youthful". * Mobile phone brand awareness: Nokia was the most cited brand of mobile phone and was found to be the first choice of many of the respondents. Samsung was reported as the second most cited brand with Motorola, Siemens and Sony Ericsson following. The results have implications for network providers, handset manufacturers and marketers alike as they will ultimately improve these stakeholder's chances of marketing effectively to this dynamic youth market. / Business Management / M.
