O objetivo geral
[en] The current study focuses on the adoption of affirmative
action policies by the public sector higher education
system in Brazil, more specifically by the State
University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ). The overall purpose
of the research was to analyse the UERJ experience of
introducing affirmative action in 2003 by means of a quota
system, taking into consideration its genesis,
characteristics, implementation and initial results. The
study aimed in particular at investigating the experience
within the boundaries of a highly prestigious academic
space in this University - the Law School - focusing on
the stance adopted by the faculty with regard tothe
experience already being implemented in their classrooms.
We have opted for a qualitative approach in our research.
To this end, a review of the literature on the topic of
affirmative action, a survey of University official
documents and statistical data as well as semi-structured
interviews with Law School faculty members were carried
out. The 2003 experience proved the political and academic
viability of a more democratic access to courses of higher
social status. However, the issue of the permanence of
quota students in a context where University resources are
insufficient has generated tensions and challenges that
both the UERJ and the wider communities will inevitably
have to meet.

[en] THEORETICAL ELEMENTS ON LITERATURE TEACHING / [pt] ELEMENTOS TEÓRICOS PARA O ENSINO DA LITERATURACLAUDIO DE ASSUMPCAO GUIMARAES 16 October 2007 (has links)
Neste sentido, a
[en] The present M.A. thesis, Theoretical elements on
literature teaching, aims at
understanding the literary phenomenon which transcends its
textual configuration. It
keeps in sight the update of literature teaching in high
school (medium level). In order
to achieve such goal, this research analyses theoretical
tools developed by the Reception
Aesthetics and the so called Empiric Science of
Literature. It evaluates the opportunity
of transferring those models to the space of the school,
as an innovative pedagogical
strategy capable of renewing the act of teaching. In such
sense, this thesis intends to
offer ways to deal with a still present tradition and the
renewal proposals in the field of
didactics concerning the literary phenomenon and its
historiography.

[en] This dissertation, To get in is not difficult, the problem is how to hang in there…
The permanence of scholarship students in PUC-Rio is the result of an empirical
research, which includes the analysis of students, originating from Preparatory
Community Courses for the Admission Exam and ProUni, who earned
scholarships and were assisted by the Emergency Solidary Fund offered by
PUC-Rio (FESP). Besides the analysis of a quantitative data on the profile of the
assisted students, collected in 2007, semi-structured interviews were carried out
with 16 FESP students in order to understand their perceptions about the project.
In addition, strategies used by these students to persist at the university before
being included into this program were analyzed. Document and archive analyses
were conducted to present a brief overview of the history of FESP, including its
creation and development over the ten years of the project. Also included were
interviews with university teachers and staff members who participated in
implementing the FESP project. The findings of this study suggest the need for a
wider undergraduate student assistance program to guarantee the permanence
into private and public universities of students who financial support.

[en] FOR OTHER POSSIBLE HISTORIES: SEARCHING FOR CULTURAL DIALOGUES IN HISTORY TEXTBOOKS / [pt] POR OUTRAS HISTÓRIAS POSSÍVEIS: EM BUSCA DE DIÁLOGOS INTERCULTURAIS EM LIVROS DIDÁTICOS DE HISTÓRIASCINTHIA MONTEIRO DE ARAUJO 19 March 2013 (has links)
A pesquisa
[en] The analysis of curriculum policies for History Teaching in the last decades
shows the persistence of a linear and progressive time perspective in curricular
organization.Supported by Ivor Goodson, François Hartog and Reinhart
Kosseleck’s theories, this characteristic is understood as part of a disciplinary
tradition that remains stable since nineteenth century, when History had achieved
a status of school discipline. This tradition is here defined as a modern one since it
contains evidences of a modern regime of historicity. It had resulted in a specific
place for Brazilian History in historical narratives, related to an Eurocentric logic
that excludes or settles the Other in a secondary place in the process of History.
This thesis aims to criticize this perspective and to propose an alternative
approach based on the contributions of Boaventura de Sousa Santos. Santos
critics of modern western thinking indicate the possibility of overcome rational
monocultures through a sociology of absences, sociology of emergences and a
work of translation. Therefore, I argue that a critical view of the monoculture of
linear time in History teaching promotes the emergence of other possible histories.
The emphasis on temporal dimension of simultaneity favors contacts and
confrontations required for the establishment of intercultural dialogues in school
knowledge. Recognized in its epistemological specificity and cultural dimension,
the school knowledge is able to be and adequate space for the work of translation.
The research focuses two History textbooks collections approved in PNLD 2011
in order to find evidences of tradition and signs of alternative. It also seeks to
reveal assimetric modes of production which forge non-existences as well as to
symbolically enlarge the possibilities of historical narratives. Content analysis
investigates the place of Brazilian History in the general curricular organization of
textbooks and conceptions of time that are made explicit and mobilized in the
treatment of content. The different curricular organization of each textbook – chronological and thematic organization – establishes different limitations and
advantages to build intercultural contact areas. Nevertheless, the analyses
underline the potential development of a multiplicity of temporalities through the
historical notion of permanence.

[en] SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY IN ADMINISTRATION´S EDUCATION: AN EXPLORATORY STUDY ABOUT THE VISION OF THE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS / [pt] RESPONSABILIDADE SOCIAL NO ENSINO EM ADMINISTRAÇÃO: UM ESTUDO EXPLORATÓRIO SOBRE A VISÃO DOS ESTUDANTES DE GRADUAÇÃORENATA CELI MOREIRA DA SILVA 24 July 2009 (has links)
[en] The topic of Corporate Social Responsibility has been largely discussed.
Thus, it is important to know how this issue is being discussed in undergraduate
classes of Business Administration. The purpose of this study was to explore the
student’s vision of CSR and their view about the teaching of CSR in
undergraduate courses. Thirty Administration students of Rio de Janeiro were
interviewed. The results showed that the respondents are concerned about this
issue, since they consider that it is important for the practice of Administration.
Some respondents said that the space given to CSR in the university is inadequate
and, thus, it should be greater. They also said that the approach could be
improved, since sometimes it is considered a superficial approach, although the
content is correct. Many respondents learned more about it out of university, such
as in magazines, newspapers, or at work. Many respondents had a more restricted
view about the definition of CSR. The majority addressed only a few dimensions
of it, showing little knowledge about it. Some respondents have doubts about
CSR, especially basic questions, concerning the concept of the theme. Others have
also showed doubts regarding the practice of CSR. Many respondents believe that
the university where they study is not able to train socially responsible managers,
since the theme is not much discussed. Moreover, it was observed that those who
had experience in the area were more secure during the interviews; however, there
were few respondents who had used CSR in practice.

[pt] REDAÇÕES DO ENSINO MÉDIO: UMA LEITURA POR VIAS FUNCIONAIS DE ENUNCIAÇÃO / [en] SECONDARY EDUCATION ESSAYS: A FUNCTIONAL READING OF ENUNCIATIONHENRIQUE CLAUDIO DOS REIS 29 October 2012 (has links)
[en] The aim of this study is to argue that the essays of students from secondary education can deserve a reading different from the one customarily made, supported by normative grammar. It includes teachers’ understanding that, to start with, the student’s text is a timely and possible expression of an individual who, through language (Bakhtin, 1979), is in an evident process of formation of his conscience as a citizen, whose greatest prerrogative is to be the owner of his destination. This reading can be done by multiple paths: the argument latent in words (Koch, 2002; Abreu Suarez, 2000) or in the instantiation by which they occur along with others. I highlight here the choice of verbs, by which processes are created, allowing growth of line of argument (Halliday AND Matthiessen, 2004), within principles of coherence and cohesion, and also promoters of argumentativity in plots that the text is working out (Koch, 2005; Favero, 2006). My corpus consists of my students’ essays, from a public school in Baixada Fluminense, who answered the question / theme posed by me: Is the favela a place of bandits? Based on functional-systemic linguistics, I analyze the texts in a non-grammaticalized way ( grammar in the traditional sense), in which the text stands on its functionalism, as an entity that validates its exterior, its semantics, context and resulting argumentative phraseology. This analysis indicates that some texts are more elaborate than others: some achieve greater cohesion than others, which present disconnected sentences. This itself deserves a discussion because they were produced by students who are about to graduate as elementary school teachers. I problematize the context of secondary education of public school, presented by some commentators and also by statistical data for measuring progress or setbacks in its development. I conclude by reaffirming the role of the Portuguese language teacher. If he/she deals with students’ essays as more than just a curricular activity, he/she can be the main agent of students’ identity
awareness-raising process. He/she can help them see that they are a voice to be unquestionably firmed.

[pt] EDUCAÇÃO DE JOVENS E ADULTOS E PLURALIDADE CULTURAL: A REALIDADE DE UM COLÉGIO SUPLETIVO DE ENSINO MÉDIO / [en] YOUTH AND ADULTS EDUCATION AND CULTURAL PLURALITY: THE REALITY OF A SUPPLEMENTARY HIGH SCHOOLDIANA SAYÃO VIEIRA 26 August 2011 (has links)
documental e a entrevista semiestruturada.
[en] This work is a study about the Adults and Youth Education (Educação de
Jovens e Adultos –EJA) in an evening high school equivalency program. We have
chosen one school that is part of this kind of program and we have tried to
understand its functioning under a critic multiculturalism perspective in an
interculturallity vision. Starting with this premise, a qualitative research was
carried out, in fact a case study, in a public school of the state of Rio de Janeiro,
named Colégio Arpoador. The methodological strategies included, besides the
bibliography review, three data collection techniques: observation, documental
analyses and semi-structured interview. The main objectives were to analyze if
Colégio Arpoador’s teachers recognize and work with the heterogeneous reality of
its students, considering their pedagogical practices, the curriculum and the
identity construction, besides identifying the contributions of an intercultural
education for this kind of equivalency program. The results obtained from the
teacher testimonies indicate that they recognize the existence of a great cultural
diversity among students, although this reality seems not to constitute a reference
to their pedagogical practices and the curriculum subject selection. It seems that
teachers don’t experience the intercultural education as a practice, but there is an
effort to understand how it works and how it can be stimulated in daily school.
From the results, the research tried to show the difficulties found in high school
EJA, and also tried to suggest ways to renovate the pedagogical practices, starting
from the principle that intercultural education is a very productive way of giving
multiples benefits for that reality.

[pt] QUALIDADE DE ENSINO EM DUAS ESCOLAS DA REDE MUNICIPAL DO RIO DE JANEIRO: O QUE PRODUZ A DIFERENÇA? / [en] TEACHING QUALITY IN TWO PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN THE CITY OF RIO DE JANEIRO: WHAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE?ANDRÉIA MARTINS DE OLIVEIRA SANTO 06 October 2011 (has links)
A análise do material empírico
[en] The research is part of the investigation Institutional Contexts and the
Construction of Quality Teaching in Basic Education organized by SOCED –
Group Research in Sociology Sociology of Education of PUC - Rio that aims at
making a comparative study between two public schools in the city of Rio de
Janeiro, one of them showed results above the Municipal average of the standard
grade on the Prova Brasil of 2005 and 2007, done by 9th-grade students and the
other showed results below that average. The analysis of the empirical material
(SOCED Survey) made up of questionaires answered by students’ parents,
students and teachers from both schools; field records and interviews with
members of the school administrations enabled us to observe some organizational
and sociopedagogical features of the two schools which could point out pertinent
elements for the understanding of the difference in the students’ performances on
their official evaluations in both schools. In order to understand the possible
causes of that difference, the investigation could draw up each school’s profile,
considering the organizational structure of the school regarding the teachers and
the school’s administration; draw up the socialdemographic profiles of the
educational agents; besides locating the schools in the organizational structure of
public schools in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The pedagogical practice of each
school, the family-school relationship and the relationship established with the
political power were also elements that arose from the analysis, considering the
geographical location of the two schools, both located in northern zone of Rio de
Janeiro; however, one located in a slum area, Complexo da Maré, and the other
located in Bonsucesso, an important commercial borough of the city.

[en] ENGLISH TEACHING COURSE BOOKS IN A SOCIODISCURSIVE PERSPECTIVE: CULTURES, IDENTITIES AND POST MODERNITY / [pt] O LIVRO DIDÁTICO DE INGLÊS EM UMA ABORDAGEM SÓCIO-DISCURSIVA: CULTURAS, IDENTIDADES E PÓS-MODERNIDADEROGÉRIO TILIO 16 August 2006 (has links)
oportunidades de voz aos alunos;
aprendizagem
e uma abordagem
crítica de discurso e de cultura. A partir de uma visão
não-essencialista das
identidades e considerando a sociedade inserida na pós-
modernidade, este
trabalho analisa doze livros de ensino de inglês, de
seis
interpessoal); e a
organização estrutural do material (metafunção textual)
doze livros,
americanizada e europeizada, sendo o status e a
visibilidade determinantes de sucesso, tal como na
sociedade pós-moderna. A organização dos livros
didáticos,
muitas vezes tematizando o componente gramatical, mostra
no mundo.
[en] The purpose of this research is to investigate the
discourse of English as
foreign language coursebooks and its relation to students´
construction of social
identities. In order to observe socio-discursively how
these books represent the
world and the cultural contexts related to the English
language; to investigate the
extent to which they offer voice opportunities to
students; and to identify the
beliefs they reflect concerning the teaching and learning
of English, this thesis
adopts a systemic-functional approach to language, a socio-
interactionist view of
teaching and learning and a critical perspective of
discourse and culture. Adopting
a non-essentialist view of social identities and
considering the insertion of society
in post modernity, this research analyzes twelve English
coursebooks, from six
different series, at beginner and intermediate levels.
Books were selected
according to variation parameters involving communicative
objectives, target
audience, both place and date of publication, and consumer
market. Topics and
cultural contexts were investigated to identify the world
view expressed in each
book (ideational metafunction); exercises and activities
were both related to the
social roles imagined for projected book users and to
students´ voice opportunities
(interpersonal metafunction); finally, the structural
organization of the materials
(textual metafunction) was studied to identify authors´
beliefs concerning the
teaching and learning of English as a foreign language.
The analysis showed that
the choice of topics and cultural contexts provides a
world view that may lead
students to adopt certain identities which are presented
as the right ones, socially
acceptable and legitimated in several books. Results also
indicate, in eight out of
the twelve books analyzed, the representation of an
American and European world
view, where status and visibility are crucial to success,
in accordance with post
modern society. The organization of the materials, which
generally thematize
grammar, shows that most authors understand the teaching
and learning process as a set of formal rules to be
apprehended and reproduced, rather than a way of
acting in the world. The analysis of the exercises and
activities showed that there
is little space for learners´ cultures and few
opportunities for them to show their
voice and perform their identities freely. Results of this
research point to the
importance of discussing these issues and making students,
teachers and
researchers who deal with coursebooks aware of the social
and discursive force
inherent to the materials, which can interfere with the
construction of identities,
worlds and beliefs.

[en] THE INTERACTIVE WHITEBOARD AS A MULTIMODAL-MEDIATING TOOL IN THE TEACHING OF ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE / [pt] O QUADRO BRANCO INTERATIVO COMO FERRAMENTA MULTIMODAL NO ENSINO DE INGLÊS COMO LÍNGUA ESTRANGEIRAFELLIPE FERNANDES CAVALLERO DA SILVA 19 October 2012 (has links)
[en] This research consists of an investigation on the multimodal aspects of the Interactive Whiteboard (IWB) as a mediating tool in the teaching of English as a foreign language (TEFL). Initially, the theoretical background offered by Activity Theory was used with a view to contextualizing the technological artifact in question in the field of teaching activities, from the process of elaborating a lesson to the moment of executing it. The concepts of mediation, teaching activity, set of genres and genre systems constitute the basis for systematizing and contextualizing, whether individually or collectively, the array of actions and operations referring to the classroom environment where the IWB is present. Since the study was delimited to the matter of teaching, an online questionnaire was developed in order to check the perspectives of a group of teachers from a renowned private institution, with excellence in the TEFL through the use of state-of-the-art technologies, which also include the IWB. The main purpose of this questionnaire was to obtain a better understanding of the teaching activities mediated by the IWB, by searching for facilitators or delimiters throughout the process, besides comparing these results with more traditional tools, such as blackboards, whiteboards, transparencies and slides/presentations. The results favor the use of the IWB due to its multiplicity and availability of resources; nevertheless, it is argued that it should not be the main focus in any of the teaching activities mentioned above.
