[en] DISCOURSE GENRES IN ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE COURSE BOOKS: REPRESENTATIONS AND PEDAGOGICAL IMPLICATIONS / [pt] OS GÊNEROS DISCURSIVOS EM LIVROS DIDÁTICOS DE INGLÊS COMO LÍNGUA ESTRANGEIRA: REPRESENTAÇÕES E IMPLICAÇÕES PEDAGÓGICAS

SOLIMAR PATRIOTA SILVA 06 October 2006 (has links)
[en] The purpose of this study is to identify discourse genres (Johns, 1997; 2002) in English course books for elementary students and to analyze their representation in these materials. Based on the assumption that communication is only possible through discourse genres (Bakhtin, 2000; Kress, 1993; Meurer, 2000), in this dissertation we consider that foreign language teaching should also take the development of genre competence as an essential point (National Curriculum Parameters - PCN, 1996). In order to investigate these issues, this research analyzes three English course books for elementary students which were selected according to variety of English, target audience, adoption in Rio de Janeiro language schools, publishers and date of publication. Written discourse genre identification and frequency analysis were performed in reading and writing activities which were considered as probable sites for genre presentation in English teaching course books. Results of this research indicate that there are few written genres represented in the analyzed elementary books, with a higher frequency of text types (Marcuschi, 2002). In these representations, however, genre format and linguistic conventions are many times not in accordance with actual genre use. Concerning the presentation of genres in reading and writing activities, the analysis has shown that they are more frequent in the former, and used as grammar reinforcement in the latter. In addition, texts observed in these activities were characterized as compatible with the knowledge telling model of the writing process (Bereiter & Scardamalia, 1987), being short and simple, not requiring any knowledge transforming. These results point towards the conclusion that students´ previous knowledge of genre use in their native language is scarcely taken into consideration in the teaching of a foreign language and that the teaching of English for beginners is not yet focusing on discourse genres. Pedagogical implications of this research indicate the need to reflect upon the role of the course book in teaching, once it is the channel that enables multiple genres to be taken into classrooms. The need for teachers´ critical and reflective attitude towards the use of English course books in the teaching of genres is also discussed.

[en] WRITING IN ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE FROM A GENRE-BASED APPROACH: A CASE STUDY / [pt] A PRODUÇÃO ESCRITA EM INGLÊS COMO LÍNGUA ESTRANGEIRA PELA ABORDAGEM DOS GÊNEROS DISCURSIVOS: O ESTUDO DE UM CASO

ISABELA GOMES BUSTAMANTE 04 September 2007 (has links)
[en] This study analyzes the writing of Brazilian students from one class in a language course as well as their responses to a questionnaire and an interview, in order to investigate genre characteristics in their written work and also their perceptions concerning the genres they produce. The analysis is based on the five characteristics of genres presented by Swales (1990:58): communicative purpose, structure, style, content and audience. This qualitative study used 28 compositions written by 16 students in one advanced-level class in a language course; two genres and one text type were analyzed. The data include 10 advice letters, 10 film reviews, and 8 narratives. After all the students answered the questionnaire, five from the same class were interviewed so that their perceptions could be considered in the genre analysis (Swales 1990, 2001). The analysis of the data showed that the students have some awareness of the communicative purpose and content of the genres they produced; however, they demonstrate a lack of control of genre structure when there is no given model for the writing. This structural variation does not hinder the students success as learners, though, considering their overall performance in the course. There is also variation in the students perception of audience, since either they envision an imaginary reader or they write for the teacher. Both the interviews and the texts showed that further lexical learning and review of grammatical structures would help them write more fluently and confidently. The results indicate that, although the students have some genre awareness about their writing, they need to acquire greater learner autonomy in order to be able to investigate their own difficulties and revise and consolidate the content on their own. The study suggests an approach to teaching that will encourage learners to gain more confidence and fluency in their writing and to produce genres with autonomy, so that they may be enabled to participate actively in discourse practices in their social, professional and academic life.

[en] THE UNIVERSITY COMPOSITION ENTRANCE EXAMINATION AS A GENRE: TEXTUAL CONFIGURATION AND SOCIAL PROCESS / [pt] A REDAÇÃO DE VESTIBULAR COMO GÊNERO: CONFIGURAÇÃO TEXTUAL E PROCESSO SOCIAL

JOSYELE RIBEIRO CALDEIRA 11 September 2006 (has links)
[en] The objective of this research is to study university composition entrance examinations as a discourse genre, in order to characterize its textual structure and to examine it as a social process in the pedagogic context. Theoretical aspects of systemic-functional linguistics (Halliday, 1994, Martin, 1989), genre studies (Marchuschi, 2002) and argumentation principles (Perelman, 1993, Breton, 1998) were applied to a corpus of 135 assignments. The texts, selected according to a range of grade variation, were written in Portuguese by applicants for courses of several areas from three universities located in different Brazilian states, two public institutions and a private one. As part of the analysis, textual configuration parameters were observed through the identification of the use of text types and argumentative structures found in the compositions. The analysis also aimed at the characterization of that particular genre in terms of academic discourse, leading it beyond its materialization in texts into the wider perspective of its relationship with the academic context. Research results show that applicants use different text types in their assignments, as well as several kinds of arguments, narratives being frequent as well as arguments with some emotional appeal. These characteristics, as well as the recurrent use of an oversimplified argumentative scheme and constant context explicitation (Biber, 1988, Oliveira, 2002) and with the constant use of nominalizations that refer to abstract ideas rather than processes, expressed through verbal forms that refer to actions (Halliday, 1994), point towards academic discourse. seem to contribute towards the characterization of these texts as not totally fitting academic discourse, thus frustrating examiners´ expectations and being evaluated by the committees as inadequate, due to lack of efficiency. On the other hand, the use of creative and humorous arguments, which are considered efficient, with reduced use of subjectivity marks also demonstrate that the texts analyzed are in accordance with the requirements of the academic context. Therefore, this research leads into the conclusion that university composition entrance examinations show both constitutive aspects inherent to academic discourse and also some dissonant characteristics typical of nonacademic texts. These results reinforce the need for the discursive characterization of this genre and its study as a social process in the Brazilian pedagogic context.

[en] TELEVISIN ADVERTISEMENTS AS A DISCOURSE GENRE: VERBAL INTERACTIONS UNDER BAKHTIN`S PERSPECTIVE / [pt] O GÊNERO DISCURSIVO PROPAGANDA TELEVISIVA: INTERAÇÕES VERBAIS NA PERSPECTIVA BAKHTINIANA

AMANDA FERRAZ DE OLIVEIRA E SILVA 15 September 2005 (has links)
[en] The purpose of this research is to study the genre television advertisements and verbal interactions under Bakhtin`s perspective. The main corpus of the study is composed of data from TV ads, having been recorded and transcribed 11 samples of Brazilian car advertisements of FIAT Automobile Company, produced from 2000 to 2003. The analysis of the ads was based on theoretical concepts extracted from Bakhtin`s language theory (1981, 1992 and 1997), considering genre, verbal interaction, dialogism, discursive voices, intertextuality and irony. Based on the results of the analysis, the classification of television advertisements as a complex intersemiotic genre is proposed. Data analysis also led into the characterization of TV ads as a fusion of the advertisement genre itself together with its supporting medium, the television. The analysis of verbal interactions indicates that this genre reflects socio-historical aspects, values and stereotypes of a particular period of time through ideological voices, which are intertwined in discourse. This research confirms that language is a social, historical and ideological phenomenon and that context is very important for the understanding of what is said or of what one wants to say in a television advertisement, which is itself a social utterance (Bakhtin, 1981, 124).

[en] THE CONSTRUCTION OF AUTHORIAL POSITIONING IN SECONDARY SCHOOL WRITTEN PRODUCTION: AN ANALYSIS OF APPRAISAL RESOURCES AS ARGUMENT STRATEGIES / [pt] A CONSTRUÇÃO DO POSICIONAMENTO DO AUTOR NA PRODUÇÃO TEXTUAL DE ALUNOS DO ENSINO MÉDIO: UMA ANÁLISE DOS RECURSOS DA AVALIATIVIDADE COMO ESTRATÉGIAS ARGUMENTATIVAS

ANA PAULA GUIDA TAVARES 26 March 2015 (has links)
[en] The purpose of this study is to investigate the construction of authorial positioning in written argumentative texts produced by 12th grade students, regarding this discursive practice as a social semiotic space for creating strategies of argumentation and meaning negotiation. Considering writing as a conscious, planned and carefully thought activity, this research is theoretically supported by: the language perspective proposed by Systemic Functional-Linguistics (Halliday e Hassan, 1989; Halliday e Matthiessen, 1999; Eggins, 2004; Gouveia, 2009); the Appraisal System (Martin e White, 2005; Vian Jr, 2002); Genres Studies (Martin, 1992; Bakhtin, 1992; Miller, 1994) and theories of Argumentation (Breton, 1999; Abreu, 2003). Argumentative texts written by 12th grade students, which simulate compositions proposed in university entrance exams, were selected in order to investigate the construction of authorial positioning. Results indicate that Appraisal resources enhance the argumentative potential in the construction of authorial positioning, acting as possible strategies in the argumentation process. Considering the theoretical contribution, data analysis suggests a close relationship between language meaning potential and text argumentative potential, which are realized through semantic and lexical choices and are related to strategies of argumentation that result in argumentative meaning potentials. Therefore, according to this study, it is possible to create a parallel between the language perspective proposed by Systemic Functional-Linguistics and studies of argumentation. Implications of the study point to the latent necessity of using the Systemic-Functional and Appraisal frameworks in the classroom, in the teaching-learning of Portuguese Language, mainly in relation to the Written Production.

[en] BUILDING A THEORETICAL AND ANALYTICAL MODEL OF THE ARGUMENTATIVE DISCOURSE IN THE EARLY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL GRADES: A SOCIOCOGNITIVE AND SOCIODISCURSIVE APPROACH OF OPINION ESSAY / [pt] CONSTRUINDO UM MODELO TEÓRICO E ANALÍTICO DO DISCURSO ARGUMENTATIVO NAS PRIMEIRAS SÉRIES DO ENSINO FUNDAMENTAL: UMA ABORDAGEM SOCIOCOGNITIVA E SOCIODISCURSIVA DO TEXTO DE OPINIÃO.

TEREZINHA MARIA BARROSO SANTOS 31 March 2006 (has links)
[en] In the field of Psychology and Didactics of Language many researches on the acquisition and learning process of argumentative discourse among elementary school students have led us to approach this discursive competence based on the parameters of adult mode of writing arguments. As a result, studies on the subject matter tend to conceive the children`s essays in terms of inadequacy and lack of proficiency; and as consequence of its complex cognitive demands the teaching of argument has been belated to the end of elementary school curriculum (14-15years old). The implicit hypothesis behind this procedure is that there is a graduation-succession for the learning of discursive genres in a way that narrative and descriptive genres should precede systematic teaching of argumentation. The prime goal of the present research is to determine to what extent 8-11 year-old pupils have represented for themselves the argumentative schema when they are asked to write an opinion essay as a school task. The second one is to identify how this textual schema is carried out by the learning children and textualized into written mode of language, considering (1) children`s cognitive development level to deal with the dialogic dimensions of written discourse; (2) the turn-take conversation influences on their writing, and (3) children`s lack of formal learning of argumentative genres in school curriculum. For this purpose we took as our basis on the sociocognitive hypothesis of language acquisition and on socionteracionist approach of language. The research analyses a longitudinal corpus composed of 145 essays produced by the same elementary school students from 2nd grade up to the beginning of 5th in a public school. The students were asked to write five different opinion essays. The analysis is split into two main focuses: the first one highlights the way the learning children build their written opinion in terms of textual configuration through both articulation and coordination of textual sequences; the second focus highlights the nature of arguments chosen by the learning children in terms of epistemological attitude and evidenciality. The research confirms that in the genre of argument and expressions of opinion, most of the children displays a particular knowledge to categorize communicative events of language in use, although the cognitive model triggered to convince and persuade the addressee could not necessarily suit the adult prototype schema and school expectations. At the same time, it also shows that a simple argumentative disposal does not determine beforehand the textual schema triggered by the children to frame their argumentation; contextual and sociocognitve features also determine the pragmatic, discursive and argumentative dimension of the text. Due to the features shown in the present research, and as far as pedagogy and didactic of language is concerned we defend that systematical and progressive teaching of argumentation should begin as early as possible in school context.
