Effective construction of data aggregation services in JavaAndersson, Fredrik, Cedergren Malmqvist, Simon January 2015 (has links)
Large quantities of data are generated daily by the end users of various services. This data is often provided by different providers, which creates a fragmented market where the end users have to utilize multiple applications in order to access all of their data. This can be counteracted by the development of aggregation services that gather data from multiple services to a combined endpoint. The development of these kinds of services does however run the risk of becoming costly and time-consuming since new code is written for several projects even though large portions of the functionality is similar. To avoid this, established technologies and frameworks can be utilized, thereby reusing the more general components. Which of the technologies are the best suited, and thereby can be considered the most effective from a development perspective, can however be difficult to determine. This essay is therefore based on what can be considered an academic consensus through analysis of literature regarding earlier reasearch on the subject. Before the writing of the essay began a Java-based data aggregation service was developed, based on requirements from the company ÅF in Malmö. The purpose of this experimental implementation is to gather data from two separate services, and make them accessible on a unified endpoint. After the implementation was finished, work on the essay began. This consists of a literature review to investigate what technologies and frameworks that has been found best suited for this area of application by academic research. The results from this study are also used to analyze the extent of the correlation between the results and the requirements presented by ÅF regarding the experimental implementation. The literature review shows that the choices made by the company largely correlates with the technologies that the academic research has found best suited for this area of application. This includes OAuth 2.0 for authentication, JSON as a serialization format and REST for communications architecture. The literature review also indicates a possible gap within the available academic literature since searches regarding specific pieces of software related to the subject only results in a small amount of articles.

Reducing substances in the blood of normal and alloxan treated fish / Fish blood reducing substancesMoule, Margaret Laura 05 1900 (has links)
Blood sugar levels were determined in toadfish and catfish by the Folin reducing procedure and a specific enzymatic glucose procedure. The difference between the two values was considered to be the rest reduction (RR). After alloxan injection, the RR level increased greatly reaching a peak at one hour and then decreasing. The glucose level rose more slowly.
An attempt was made to study these changes in blood by paper chromatography using silver nitrate to detect reducing compounds. In normal blood, glucose, an unidentified compound, and several other reducing compounds present in small amounts were separated. The large amount or RR present after alloxan could not be detected by silver nitrate.
The significance of the results was discussed and future investigations were suggested. / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)

Retreating to Restore: A Haven for the Athletic Mind and BodyVillegas, Arianna Rosario 04 June 2024 (has links)
Mental health struggles and suicide rates in athletic populations have been on the rise for the past two decades, with an even bigger increase since the pandemic. Disorders such as stress, depression, and anxiety have been the main causes for these struggles and fatalities. The growing rates of mental health disorders and suicide within this population indicate that athletes do not have the adequate resources to restore and improve their mental health. In some instances of presenting their troubles to coaches, staff, or teammates, their only advice is to seek help with on-campus resources or resources at home. Although this can be sound advice in some cases, this can also create the sense that there is no escape from what may be the cause of these mental obstacles.
The purpose of this thesis is to create a mental health retreat for collegiate, professional, olympic, and retired athletes. Tucked away at the edge of Rock Creek Park in Washington, D.C., in between existing amenities such as the Carter Barron Amphitheatre and the William Fitzgerald Tennis Center, the retreat allows for the continual use of existing amenities along with other resources and practices provided on-site. This retreat aims to provide spaces and resources at a location that teams or individuals can visit to allow for healing and education about these mental health disorders. This serene space in the middle of a chaotic big city will provide space for resting, performing, healing, and overall restoring which begins to break the barriers between what can be overcome in the feelings that may seem indomitable. / Master of Architecture / Mental health struggles and rising suicide rates among athletes have become increasingly concerning over the past two decades, with a significant spike since the pandemic. Stress, depression, and anxiety are the primary issues affecting this population, and current resources appear inadequate to address their needs. Often, athletes are advised to seek help from on-campus or home resources, which may not always be effective and can sometimes exacerbate feelings of entrapment.
This thesis proposes the creation of a mental health retreat for collegiate, professional, Olympic, and retired athletes. Located at the edge of Rock Creek Park in Washington, D.C., near amenities like the Carter Barron Amphitheatre and the William Fitzgerald Tennis Center, this retreat offers a peaceful environment for healing and education. By utilizing existing amenities and providing additional on-site resources and practices, the retreat aims to support athletes in their mental health journeys. This serene space in the heart of a bustling city will offer opportunities for rest, performance, healing, and overall restoration, helping athletes overcome mental health challenges.

Rest Area Wilderness Experience: Reimagining the Design of Rest Areas on Interstate 64Curtis, Jeffrey Wilson 14 September 2017 (has links)
Wilderness has inspired the imagination and passion of Americans for the past two centuries. However, the places that are most often designated as wilderness are frequently far away and difficult for most people to access. It is therefore important to understand how the idea of wilderness can be rescaled and rethought to allow for its benefits to be more attainable within common and accessible areas. Interstate rest areas provide an excellent subject to study how a wilderness experience can be designed within an area not typically associated with wild nature. The rest areas on Interstate 64 in Virginia provide a good opportunity to conduct this study due to the variety ecological conditions that the interstate passes through. This thesis explores the varying conditions of all the rest areas on Interstate 64 in Virginia and develops a design for one of them, New Kent County Eastbound at mile marker 213. This design process is a site specific model for designing a wilderness experience at an interstate rest area that provides opportunities to experience local ecology, improve storm water management features, and increase wildlife habitat. / Master of Landscape Architecture / This thesis design examines the possibility of creating wilderness and providing wilderness experiences in an unexpected place, the interstate rest area. What defines wilderness is a variable concept that can be rescaled based on individual preferences, beliefs, and experiences. This design explores the variability of these scales while placing the design of a wilderness experience at a rest area within the natural context of the local environment.

Astrofarmaci: Hur antibiotika fungerar i rymden : En scoping review av antibiotikas farmakokinetiska förändringar i rymden. / Astropharmacy: How antibiotics function in space : A scoping review of the pharmacokinetic changes of antibiotics in spaceQanbari, Nadia January 2024 (has links)
Introduction: Space exploration has been a dream of mankind since ancient times, this dream became a reality with the launch of Sputnik in 1957. Since then, significant advances in space technology have enabled humans to travel beyond the Earth's atmosphere. Although some of the health risks are well known, the effect of changes in the pharmacokinetics of drugs and their effectiveness is not yet fully understood. Aim and Method: This study aims to investigate the effect of space travel on the pharmacokinetics of antibiotics. A scoping review method was employed to investigate the changes in the pharmacokinetics of antibiotics during space travel. A search of the PubMed database was performed using the relevant terms. Inclusion criteria included available English full-text articles. A three-step selection process was employed, followed by data analysis and evaluation, to select relevant original scientific articles. Results: The findings suggest that the pharmacokinetics of some antibiotics, such as ciprofloxacin penicillin and benzylpenicillin, may not be significantly altered in microgravity environments. Further research is needed to better understand the implications of space travel on antibiotic efficacy and safety. Conclusion: Current research on the pharmacokinetic changes of antibiotics in microgravity simulations shows little change compared to Earth. However, further research is crucial to understand their bioavailability, durability, and performance in space environments, ensuring the health and safety of space travelers.

Rest in peace : a study in solo performanceSleigh, Kelli Rose 01 January 2009 (has links)
This project allowed me to utilize the knowledge I have acquired over the past four years at the University of Central Florida as a BFA Musical Theatre major, as well as challenged me to explore and research other areas of theatre that are foreign to me. All this work culminated with a performance of my play, Rest In Peace: A Musical Showcase, and this written thesis. I look forward to leaving the University of Central Florida with deeper insight into playwriting, theatre production, and performance. This project provided me with a performance opportunity where there was none before and provided the students on my production team an opportunity to be part of the development of a new piece of theatre. It also had an effect on the audiences that saw the production, as it reminded people of the important things in life that are easily forgotten by our current generation. It is easy to complain about not ·having performance opportunities, but why waste the time and energy on something that will not accomplish anything? My mother has always said "When life hands you lemons, make lemonade” and that is what I intended to do with this project.

Securing Legacy MultiValue Pick Systems Modernized by RESTful Web Service APIsLee, Jacob S 10 December 2024 (has links) (PDF)
With more applications accessible on the Web, organizations with mission-critical legacy systems have had to find a way to stay relevant and competitive by modernizing with RESTful APIs. REST architecture, serving as a guideline rather than a strict protocol, offers significant advantages in terms of scalability, flexibility, and independence; however, its widespread adoption has also led to notable security vulnerabilities and weaknesses. Additionally, there is not one all-encompassing security testing methodology to follow when testing RESTful APIs. For this reason, a new security testing methodology was developed for legacy MultiValue Pick systems that implement the REST API component, MVConnect. The steps of the methodology consist of: threat modeling, source code review, penetration testing, and mitigation. A case study involving a legacy D3 MultiValue Pick Database Management System (DMS) implementing MVConnect was assessed following this methodology. Several vulnerabilities were identified, discovered, and exploited including the following: security misconfigurations, broken authentication, broken authorization, session mismanagement, server-side request forgery, and unsafe consumption of APIs. Mitigation solutions were proposed including basic authentication and authorization control mechanisms specific to D3 MultiValue Pick and proper firewall rules to administer. The new security testing methodology enabled a successful security assessment of a legacy MultiValue Pick system that employed MVConnect. The mitigation solutions are capable of securing legacy MultiValue Pick systems implementing MVConnect.
