Weight Management Counseling and Obesity Severity in Children With Special Health Care Needs

Epidemiologic surveillance indicates an increased susceptibility to obesity among children with special health care needs (SHCN) in comparison to children without. The present study investigated this disparity in weight severity between both groups, with a focus on the provision of obesity management counseling by physicians. This study consisted of a retrospective medical record review that acknowledged the effect of patient-provider interactions on health behaviors and risk perceptions. An independent sample t test compared the incidence of clinician-initiated obesity management counseling received by children with SHCN to that which was received by children without SHCN. This t test revealed a statistically significant difference between the weight management frequency received by youth with SHCN (M = 1.0, SD =.46498) and the weight management frequency received by youth without SHCN (M = 2.0, SD = .74975), t(100) = 7.826, p = .000, α =.05 over a 2-year timeframe. Bivariate correlation analysis validated a correlation between weight severity among children with SHCN and the incidence of clinician-initiated obesity management counseling. The results indicated a small but significant association between weight severity and weight management frequency among children with SHCN, r(50) = .287, p = .044, α =.05. These results support the need for a transformation in the delivery of preventive health services for children with SHCN, such as providing clinician-based obesity management strategies and increasing access to validated diagnosis-specific preventive health screening tools. These results promote positive social change by informing efforts to improve health outcomes and decrease health disparities experienced by people with SHCN.

SOCIAL WORKERS' PERCEPTION ON THE NEEDS AND SERVICES FOR FOSTER CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

Foster children are already at a disadvantage given that they tend to live in a home without their parents. Social workers have direct interactions working with children with special needs, and through interviews with the workers, we aimed to understand whether or not the services available are able to meet foster children’s special needs. The research on special needs children in foster care is quite limited. The purpose of the study was to identify social workers’ perceptions of the needs of special needs foster children and their access to services. This study used qualitative interviews with open-ended questions to gather qualitative data from ten social worker participants. The researchers employed thematic analysis techniques to analyze the qualitative data. The themes that emerged from analyzing the data were social workers’ challenges in providing services to special needs foster children, social workers’ access to services, and the need for institutional support to effectively manage service delivery for special needs foster children. This study found that social workers face challenges in obtaining training for parents and social workers, navigating complex funding processes, managing inconsistent desires between parents and court officials, and dealing with the limited number of capable foster homes. The social workers interviewed identified different tactics that could be implemented in order to improve services for the special needs foster children through changes and improvements within the department. Understanding large-scale policy and practice issues, such as organizational change or resource management, can lead county agency social workers to advocate for the challenges of special needs children in child welfare.

The Importance of Social and Emotional Needs for the Psychological Well-Being of Cancer Survivors: An Application of Socioemotional Selectivity Theory

As the number of cancer survivors continues to rise, there is an increasing need for psychological research to better understand and help individuals cope with their cancer journey. According to Socioemotional Selectivity theory (SST), shortened time perspective and mortality awareness heighten the importance of social and emotional goals. In the present analysis, SST is applied to the unmet needs of cancer survivors. This is done to provide a better understanding of the association between unmet needs of cancer survivors and the impact of such needs on the survivors' psychological well-being, especially in the case of survivor’s awareness of his/her mortality. In keeping with SST theory, we anticipated that for those with higher mortality awareness (e.g., recurrence of cancer, older age, greater mortality ratio), high unmet social and emotional needs, above else, will be associated with lower psychological well-being. Partial support was found for these hypotheses and results are discussed in terms of their contribution to a better understanding of the nature of psychological well-being of cancer survivors.

Beauty comes from within; A business case for Volvo Car Corporation about interior design on tomorrow's Chinese market

The problem of this thesis is that the investigation is tied to a country that is not fully explored to Volvo Car Corporation at the present time. Differences within culture and attitudes will be important for Volvo Car Corporation to be aware of. Will the new customers emphasize the importance of social or functional needs or do they care for the same attributes as the Swedish buyers do? The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the consumer trends within interior design in the front row of the car among young potential car buyers in China. This will be done in order to gather information that can be interpreted and valuable for Volvo Cars future business decisions. To fulfill the purpose of this theis a deductive approach have been implemented with theories that are drawn from previous research. The theories will be integrated with quantitative findings that the authors have received through a conducted Internet survey. The study was implemented on a group of Chinese students and were then compared to a sample of Swedish students. This was done in order to investigate the different tendencies for the two samples regarding the interior design within a car. The findings shows that there are both similarities and differences between the two samples which dismiss the concept of a Global Teenager. The tendencies that the authors found through the conducted research shows that the hedonic and social factors are emphasised while the utilitarian needs seem to be accounted for as obvious in the majority of cases. The findings further states that there are no strong feelings concerning Roominess and Daily Life Usage. The liking of the smaller car do give a signal that roominess and storage is not of highest importance. These two concepts were not the most preferred interior attributes and were placed in the region from three to five in the ranking. The authors conclusion for Volvo Car Corporation is that the focus should lie on the aspect of a car that generates an emotional attachment to the customer.

Identification of Needs Influencing the Students’ Selection of University

Recent changes in the educational sector have lead many universities to re-think their existing approaches in attracting students to their institutions. Attracting better students and increasing student enrolments is becoming more critical then ever. In the past, the needs of students were overlooked. Universities focused mainly on either administrators or the faculty’s perspective. Nevertheless, the customers’ needs are the driving force of every business and should be the most important consideration for universities as well. As competition among universities grows in intensity, a need for a better understanding of potential students is crucial. The analysis of various student segments and decision-making behaviour is the essence of educational marketing. This paper focuses on identification of needs of the students when selecting a university. Through the use of random interviews of students on campus a list of what students need from a university was collated. Two internet surveys were then constructed based on those needs and e-mailed to the students. The second survey was sent to increase the reliability of the responses and the question order was reversed as opposed to the first. By doing this it was hoped to eliminate “Questionnaire boredom” and maintain consistency with the responses. The students were then asked to rank the questions in order of importance. The data collected was then analysed with software programs so an assessment could be made of any possible outcomes. It was decided that further dissemination was needed as the results were extremely broad. Further dissemination compared the first and second survey to ascertain possible differences. From the initial 25 questions only the highest priorities were selected as relevant and the questions were further reduced to the top five responses and then later to the overall two top responses. Relevant theories were selected and others were discounted, the purpose of which was to maintain a marketing perspective and to provide guidance and direction to this study. After the final analysis of the data certain recommendations were then formulated in keeping with the theories that were proposed in this study. This study ascertained that it could not disprove a given theory nor could it create a new theory due to the lack of studies in the educational area and certain discrepancies that became apparent in this study. This thesis study did however achieve its objectives and answered its research questions. What are the most important needs of students when choosing university? Do these needs vary within different study programs at Växjö University? It was further determined from the research highlighted in this study that the university has the option of designing programs that are tailored to the specific needs of students and industry. This information would allow the university to either eliminate programs that are not well received and produce programs that are more in keeping with student and industry requirements. This fact also became apparent when comparing data from different programs. According to the statistical analysis, students of different study programs had different needs when selecting Växjö University. This data further confirms the validity of our research questions.

Bakalauro darbe analizuojama nedidelių specialiųjų ugdymosi poreikių turinčių mokinių tekstinių matematikos uždavinių sprendimo ypatumai, bandoma ieškoti mokymo būdų, padedančių suprasti ir teisingai išspręsti tekstinius uždavinius. Suformuluota hipotezė, kad nedidelių specialiųjų ugdymosi poreikių turinčius mokinius išmokius tam tikrų apibendrintų tekstinių uždavinių sprendimo būdų, gerėja tekstinių uždavinių supratimas, išvengiama daugelio sprendimo klaidų. Tyrimas buvo vykdomas Kauno Medicinos Universiteto Klinikų vaikų neurologijos skyriuje, kuriame gydosi epilepsija sergantys ir kitų neurologinių sutrikimų turintys vaikai iš įvairių Lietuvos miestų bei kaimų. Tyrime dalyvavo 40 III–IV klasių nedidelių specialiųjų ugdymosi poreikių turinčių mokinių, besimokančių bendrojo lavinimo mokyklose pagal modifikuotas matematikos programas. Visi šie mokiniai turi neurologinių sutrikimų. Konstatuojamojo tyrimo rezultatai parodė, kad nedidelių specialiųjų ugdymosi poreikių turintys mokiniai ne visus tekstinius uždavinius vienodai supranta. Aiškiausi jiems yra paprastieji tekstiniai uždaviniai. Tyrimo metu paaiškėjo, kad dauguma respondentų spręsdami sudėtinius tekstinius uždavinius, nesupranta uždavinio sąlygos, nesuvokia sąlygoje duotų dydžių prasmės ir santykių tarp jų, dėl nepasitikėjimo savo jėgomis daugelio uždavinių net nebando spręsti. [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / The Bachelor's work content the analysis of the garages of solution of small textual mathematical problems among learners having special educational needs, and attempts to seek for ways of training helping to understand and correctly solve textual problems. The hypothesis has been formulated that if children with special needs are trained in certain methods of solving generalised textual mathematical problems, the solution outcomes of textual problems improves and many mistakes can be avoided. The study was carried out in Kaunas Medical University Hospital, Children's Neurology Department, treating epileptic children and other children with neurological disorders from various Lithuanian towns and villages. The study included 40 learners of 3rd and 4th grades with neurological disorders, with low special educational needs, studying in general education schools, according to modified mathematics curricula. Declarative study result showed that children with special needs differently understand some of the textual problems. The clearest of them are plain text problems. The study showed that most of respondents, solving complex textual problems, do not understand the condition of the problem, do not understand the meaning of values given in the task and that relations between them, experience distrust in themselves and do not even try to begin solving most of the problems. Att få och slippa : Motiven bakom friluftsliv

Tidigare undersökningar av motivationen att utöva friluftsliv har identifierat motiv som social samvaro, fysisk aktivitet, naturupplevelser och avkoppling, dock har området mest berörts i samband med planering och förvaltning av naturområden. Den här studien har undersökt motiv bakom människans friluftslivsutövande i syfte att förstå dessa drivkrafter i relation till mänskliga behov. Studien bestod av 31 deltagare från olika delar av Sverige, i åldrarna 22-75 med varierande sysselsättning, friluftslivs-utbildning, civilstatus och nationalitet, varav 16 kvinnor. Data samlades in genom att deltagarna fick skriva berättelser om sin motivation. Det insamlade materialet meningskoncentrerades och analysen resulterade i att tre abstrakta motiv kunde urskiljas: (1) att komma bort från något, samt (2) att få inre och (3) yttre stimulans. Utövandet har visat sig tillfredsställa flertalet behov och främjar på så vis välmående. Vidare bidrar studien till kunskap om vad den friluftsaktiva individen upplever att hon behöver. Resultaten stämmer väl överens med tidigare forskning.

Bakgrund Inom den palliativa vården anammas ett holistiskt synsätt, vilket innebär att fokus ligger på såväl fysiska, psykiska, sociala som existentiella aspekter i patientens livsvärld. Tre grundläggande psykiska behov, autonomi, möjligheter och sammanhang är essentiella i upplevelsen av psykisk hälsa. Även önskningar, värderingar och mål bidrar till patientens psykiska välbefinnande. Det har tidigare visat sig att patienters psykiska behov inte tillgodoses och sjuksköterskor inom den palliativa vården brustit i förmågan att uppmärksamma dessa behov. Syfte Syftet med studien var att beskriva patienters psykiska behov inom den palliativa vården. Metod Litteraturstudien baserades på tolv kvalitativa originalartiklar. Analysen genomfördes induktivt med en manifest innehållsanalys. Resultat Resultatet visade på psykiska behov i fem kategorier och sju underkategorier. Behoven gällde patientens närstående, självständighet, framtiden, vården och att bo hemma. Slutsatser Resultatet visade att psykiska behov kunde grundas i fysiska och sociala aspekter. Patienter som får palliativ vård förekommer på fler ställen inom specifikt den palliativa vården. Därför är det viktigt att belysa patienternas olika uttryck av psykiska behov för att de ska kunna tillgodoses och bidra till välbefinnande hos patienten. / Background In palliative care a holistic approach is embraced, which means that the focus is on physical, psychological, social and existential aspects of the patient's life-world. Three basic psychological needs, autonomy, competence and relatedness are essential concepts in the experience of mental health. Even desires, values ​​and goals contribute to the patient's psychological well-being. It has previously been shown that patients' psychological needs are not being met and that nurses in palliative care lack the ability to identify and address these needs Aim The aim of the study was to describe patients' psychological needs in the palliative care setting. Method The literature review was based on twelve qualitative original articles. An inductive, manifest content analysis was conducted. Result The result showed psychological needs in five categories and seven sub-categories; needs related to patient's family, independence, future, the healthcare system and staying at home. Conclusions The results showed that psychological needs could be based on both physical and social aspects. Patients receiving palliative care often receive that care in different environments that are not necessarily within specific palliative care clinical settings. Therefore, it is important to highlight the patients' expressions of psychological needs so that those specific needs can be addressed and in the process, improve the overall well being of the patient.
