The role of the emotional father-son relationship in the self-concept formation of adolescent boys in secondary schools

Pitsoane, Enid Manyaku January 1900 (has links)
The study investigated adolescent boys who experienced behavioural problems at school and the possible causes for these phenomena. It was evident that the adolescent boys who experienced behavioural problems were found to lack emotional connections with others due to their fathers’ absence and lack of positive attachment. A total of 403 adolescent boys from various schools in the Tshwane districts were used in the sample group. This quantitative study employed the use of a quantitative questionnaire as a means of data collection that included qualitative open-ended question as a method to enrich the quantitative data and obtain insight into the life world functioning and experience of the participants. The primary aim of the research study was to determine the emotional relationship between fathers and sons within the sample group. Secondly, the study sought to investigate how this emotional relationship affects the adolescent boy’s self-concept, resilience and motivational aspects in his daily functioning. The approach to quantitative data analysis was by means of descriptive statistical analysis. The findings revealed that emotionally absent fathers indeed impact negatively on the adolescent boys’ resilience and motivational aspects of their functioning and that a father’s absence has a significant influence on the behaviours of adolescent boys in relation to motivation and resilience. However, the research results also revealed that an emotionally absent father does not significantly affect the self–concept of an adolescent boy. Finally, an intervention programme was developed to assist and guide fathers and adolescent boys to improve their relationship with one another. / Psychology of Education / D. Ed.

Natália Laporte Correia 25 February 2016 (has links)

Narrativité et plasticité du fait sonore dans une approche design : pour une recherche appliquée : le sonorama participatif des histoires extraordinaires de nos rues et de nos espaces / ln defense of an applied research : the participatory sonorama of the extraordinary staries of our streets and spaces

Desgrandchamp, Pauline 29 November 2017 (has links)
This dissertation questions through a design approach the ways and means allowing the construction of stories related to the urban imaginary. The latter constitute possibilities of telling something through the sound dimensions of historical events, and both individual and collective experiences. The “designer of urban sounds” then builds their own urban scenophony, a method allowing the telling of the sound space — between the spaces of time and the times of space. Such a position allows to account for the socio-cultural weight of sound in the waythe world is told. This research is about detecting and then questioning what is at stakes in a changing society, using field recordings and “territory sound creations,” i.e. narratives built from the raw material of those field recordings. Two dimensions are involved in this work: a theoretical study of an artistic corpus (Tome I) and an action research born outof a city of Strasburg Cifre contract for the state-sponsored and controled Shadok, fabrique du numérique, in collaboration with a transdisciplinary association, Horizome, and the ACCRA team of the University of Strasburg (Tome II).

The look has a relational dimension, becoming an important object to the design of the entire body. Indeed, in the initial development stage, the infant perceives the body as fragmented. There is not, from him, the sense of organic integration and the perception of the distinction between the inside and the outside. Although it also depends on physiological maturity, it is from the relationship with the adult who does the mothering that can happen to the little being, acquiring the sense of bodily unity. However, in the case of autistic children, it is common to find an intricate communication between the caregiver and the baby, which appears represented, above all, the mismatch looks. To understand this phenomenon, the methodology adopted was a literature review in the psychoanalytic literature. In it, we take the Lacanian theory of the mirror Stadium and its development as a fundamental basis, linking them with the following contemporary metapsychological constructs: the psychoanalytic concepts of looking, the mother's relationship with the baby, autism and body. For this, textual productions of the authors will be used, which have as a matrix of Lacanian psychoanalysis inspiration, especially the psychoanalyst Marie-Christine Laznik (1991, 2004). : Prekaritetsläsningens möjligheter i Sara Stridsbergs Kärlekens Antarktis och Elin Perssons De afghanska sönerna / ”This place shatters those who are made of glass. It makes shards out of bodies.” : Aspects of precarity in Sara Stridsberg's Kärlekens Antarktis and Elin Persson's De afghanska sönerna

Jonsson, Martina January 2021 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the possibilities of precarity as a perspective in the field of literary studies in order to analyse how insecurity is portrayed in literature. Sweden has a great tradition of proletarian literature, but researchers in the neoliberal era find it problematic to understand the emancipating aspects of the new proletarian literature that does not focus on collective movement and articulated emancipation. This thesis explores the possibilities of precarity as a perspective for analysing how literature narrated through an individual and passive perspective can work as a social critique. The analysis focuses on the novels Kärlekens Antarktis [The Antarctica of Love] by Sara Stridsberg and De afghanska sönerna [The Afghan Sons] by Elin Persson and tries to answer questions about how these novels portray precarity and how the perspective of precarity enables an understanding of how the novels work as social criticism. The thesis mostly uses theories by Judith Butler and Isabell Lorey, and the analysis uses a comparative method in combination with a reading that focuses on the thematics of precarity. This is disposed in connection to Lorey’s three dimensions of precarity – precariousness, precarity, and governmental precarization. The analysis results in an understanding of how these kinds of novels can capture the biopolitical perspective, where politics and life emerge. The reading’s focus on the aspect of the body, followed by the hierarchical and societal aspects, shows how the novels’ individual perspectives can have collective tendencies in connection to the reader’s ability to feel solidarity with the characters.

Altier, Jasmine 12 1900 (has links)
The world oceans are filled with natural sounds, which are being increasingly encroached upon by human sourced noises (anthropogenic noise). This thesis provides an overview of the current state of knowledge on the different sources of underwater noise and their negative effects on marine species, ecosystems and coastal populations. While anthropogenic noise is an environmental stressor similar to other forms of pollution, the management of anthropogenic noise has been neglected by States and by international law. This study highlights how scientific uncertainties and gaps complicate the process of crafting specialized international and domestic instruments to mitigate the impacts of underwater anthropogenic noise. The thesis identifies and analyzes binding and soft law instruments currently in force, internationally and in Canada, to discover whether they can be used to reduce noise pollution in Canadian Arctic waters. The adoption of legal instruments specifically applicable to anthropogenic underwater noise is advocated but with the caveat that it will require concerted inter and intra sectoral cooperation at the national, regional and international levels between legislative, scientific and decision-making circles.

Music perception and the effects of music listening interventions on agitation in hospitalized acute care patients with acquired brain injury

Anderson, Kirsten 03 1900 (has links)
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) has serious physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioural consequences. Agitation is highly prevalent among patients with TBI, and is characterized by motor hyperactivity, disorientation, attention problems, emotional lability, disinhibition, and aggression. It often results in decreased engagement in rehabilitative treatment, and poorer functional outcomes. There is no consensus on the treatment for agitation. Most often, it is managed with medication and physical restraints, which may cause injury or impede cognitive recovery. Few studies examine novel non-pharmacological interventions for agitation in TBI patients. However, recent evidence suggests that music interventions may decrease agitated behavior in TBI patients. The ability of TBI patients to perceive and process music during the acute phase has not been established, though it may influence the efficacy of preferred music interventions. The first article of this thesis evaluated music perception in acutely hospitalized TBI patients. Music perception deficits have been identified in populations with acquired brain injury due to epilepsy, stroke, and after aneurysmal clipping. However, few studies have evaluated deficits following TBI, resulting in an underdiagnosis in this population. Forty-two patients completed the Scale and Rhythm tests of the Montreal Battery for the Evaluation of Amusia to measure music perception, and Digit Span Forward to measure verbal short-term memory. TBI patients were more often impaired than controls, with 43% demonstrating pitch processing deficits, and 40% demonstrating rhythm processing deficits. Patients with right hemisphere damage performed more poorly than those with left hemisphere damage. Pitch and rhythm deficits co-occurred 31% of the time, suggesting partly dissociable neural networks. Results are discussed in the context of current research and clinical implications. The second article was a non-systematic review in which we characterized agitation and its treatment. We explored behavioural interventions, including music interventions, occupational therapy, the Intervention Contingencies Awareness Relationship behavioural model, operant contingency management, and general therapeutic activities. The methodological limitations were discussed and recommendations made for a more systematic approach to research using case and case series studies in agitated patients. The third article was a phase-II development-of-concept pilot study in which four patients with moderate to severe TBI (n = 3), and middle cerebral artery stroke: (n = 1) were exposed to preferred music, relaxing classical music, and a nonmusical control (waterfall) during the acute phase of recovery. Agitated behaviours were assessed using the Agitated Behavior Scale, actigraphy, and qualitative observation. Agitated behaviour decreased during relaxing classical music, and waterfall. It remained stable in the preferred music condition. However, certain patients expressed positive emotions and organized behaviour such as tapping or singing along. Given important methodological limitations in current studies, a phase-II study allowed for the evaluation of outcomes and the practicality of delivering music listening interventions, which may guide future studies.

Toffa, Ohini Kafui 11 1900 (has links)
The objective of this thesis is to study on the one hand the problem of image sonification and to solve it through new models of mapping between visual and sound domains. On the other hand, to study the problem of sound classification and to solve it with methods which have proven track record in the field of image recognition. Image sonification is the translation of image data (shape, color, texture, objects) into sounds. It is used in vision assistance and image accessibility domains for visual impaired people. Due to its complexity, an image sonification system that properly conveys the image data to sound in an intuitive way is not easy to design. Our first contribution is to propose a new low-level image sonification system which uses an hierarchical visual feature-based approach to translate, usingmusical notes, most of the properties of an image (color, gradient, edge, texture, region) to the audio domain, in a very predictable way in which is then easily decodable by the human being. Our second contribution is a high-level sonification Android application which is complementary to our first contribution because it implements the translation to the audio domain of the objects and the semantic content of an image. It also proposes a dataset for an image sonification. Finally, in the audio domain, our third contribution generalizes the Local Binary Pattern (LBP) to 1D and combines it with audio features for an environmental sound classification task. The proposed method outperforms the results of methods that uses handcrafted features with classical machine learning algorithms and is faster than any convolutional neural network methods. It represents a better choice when there is data scarcity or minimal computing power.

Emotional experiences of incestuous fathers : a social constructionist investigation

Van Niekerk, Wilhelmina Johanna 30 September 2005 (has links)
This study aimed to relate the emotions of two fathers regarding their incestuous behaviour. The epistemological framework is social constructionism. The `case-study approach' was chosen as the most suitable method to gain access to the information. Qualitative in-depth interviews with the fathers were conducted to collect data about their emotional experiences regarding their incestuous behaviour and Hermeneutics was used as method of data analysis. The emotional experiences of the participants regarding their incestuous behaviour were reconstructed in the form of prominent themes. Themes that seemed to re-occur in both participants' stories were identified and discussed as common themes. These themes included; ambivalence, powerlessness and guilt. This study provides a rich understanding of the emotional experiences of incestuous fathers. These experiences seem to be unstated or insufficiently emphasised in the traditional empirical, cause and effect, linear modernist literature. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

Mobilization and voluntarism : the political origins of Loyalism in New York, c. 1768-1778

Minty, Christopher January 2014 (has links)
This dissertation examines the political origins of Loyalism in New York City between 1768 and 1778. Anchored by an analysis of political mobilization, this dissertation is structured into two parts. Part I has two chapters. Using a variety of private and public sources, the first chapter analyses how 9,338 mostly white male Loyalists in New York City and the counties of Kings, Queens, Suffolk and Westchester were mobilized. Chapter 1 argues that elites and British forces played a fundamental role in the broad-based mobilization of Loyalists in the province of New York. It also recognises that colonists signed Loyalist documents for many different reasons. The second chapter of Part I is a large-scale prosopographical analysis of the 9,338 identified Loyalists. This analysis was based on a diverse range of sources. This analysis shows that a majority of the province’s Loyalist population were artisans aged between 22 and 56 years of age. Part II of this dissertation examines political mobilization in New York City between 1768 and 1775. In three chapters, Part II illustrates how elite and non-elite white male New Yorkers coalesced into two distinct groups. Chapter 3 concentrates on the emergence of the DeLanceys as a political force in New York, Chapter 4 on their mobilization and coalescence into ‘the Friends to Liberty and Trade’, or ‘the Club’, and Chapter 5 examines the political origins of what became Loyalism by studying the social networks of three members of ‘the Club’. By incorporating an interdisciplinary methodology, Part II illustrates that members of ‘the Club’ developed ties with one another that transcended their political origins. It argues that the partisanship of New York City led members of ‘the Club’ to adopt inward-looking characteristics that affected who they interacted with on an everyday basis. A large proportion of ‘the Club’’s members became Loyalists in the American Revolution. This dissertation argues that it was the partisanship that they developed during the late 1760s and early 1770s that defined their allegiance.
