19世紀スイスの歴史家ブルクハルトの知的営為を「教育としての歴史」という新観点から考察し、再評価した。その結果、ドイツを中心とした近代歴史学の科学化・職業化過程の進行によって、失われつつある歴史学の歴史的社会的機能を救済することを彼の教育活動が目指してしたことをあきらかにした。文化史学の類型的な考察方法は、そのような歴史学の側面に対応したものであったことを指摘した。 / Jacob Burckhardt's cultural history was a method for the civil education in nineteenth century.
