A multiple angle detection system for coherently scattered X-ray signatures

Malden, Catharine Helen January 1998 (has links)
Coherent scatter measurements have previously shown promise as a method for detection and identification of materials. However, the time required for measurements is rather long and the computer power required to analyse the data can be quite considerable. A multiple angle coherent scatter system has been designed and built to assess the feasibility of using this technique as an alternative to a single angle coherent scatter system. An application of detecting the presence of explosives within baggage to go on board aircraft was used to test the multiple angle system. A cadmium zinc telluride detector was found to be suitable to be used with the multiple angle system. A model of the system was used to determine the number of angles required and to determine the characteristics of the collimator that would be suitable with this detector. The objective of this work was to develop a simple method of analysing the data yielded from multiple angle coherent scatter system. This has been achieved by plotting the scatter signatures in the form of energy-angle diagrams and using these plots to determine the optimum energy windows to be used with each scatter angle. Samples of 4 mm of Semtex and 6 mm of SX2 were detected with 0% false alarm rate at 100% detection rate with a single energy window centred at a planar spacing of 3.3 Å. A detector array with collimation has been built to fit within the dimensions of an existing baggage scanner. This caused an increase in the scatter volume and hence the explosive sample constituted a smaller part of it. The results were that the false alarm rate was higher than for the initial system, at 37.5% It is concluded that the multiple angle detection of coherent scatter signatures is a promising method for the detection of explosives and that it could be used for several other applications in the future.

A model for determining the minimum price of explosives when erecting and expanding 'explosives sites' throughout South Africa / by Johannes Petrus Joubert Düring.

Düring, Johannes Petrus Joubert 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2004. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of the investigation was to supply decision-makers within the explosives industry with a study, outlining all aspects important for the successful completion of a capital project. It also aimed to supply a model to support them in decision-making regarding new capital expansions and to sensitise them to what is necessary for the successful completion of a capital project. This model was developed with the aid of the following equation: Target return = Cost + Desired percentage return x Capital invested In the process of developing the model, it became clear that financial criteria could not be looked at in isolation. The conclusion was reached that, in an attempt to successfully complete a capital project, it becomes important to investigate the whole process, from budgeting to project completion. The capital project at issue takes place against the background of the explosives business in South Africa. It follows that the investigation started off with a study as to where explosives originated from, as this played an important role in the later development of mining techniques and the resulting change in how mine management approached the delivery of service through explosives companies. From the investigation it became clear that large mines, in an increasing way, opt for "one-contract suppliers". It is expected from these suppliers to manage all aspects pertaining to drilling, blasting and the hauling of ore. The study also indicated that there is an oversupply of ammonia, an important ingredient in the manufacturing of explosives, in South Africa. The combined conclusion was that margins in the explosives industry in South Africa were put under pressure. This conclusion underlines the importance of proper capital project management. It was also found that the level of customer service largely contributes towards the determination of the layout, size and quantity of remote sites. It follows that this is also a large cost driver. This cost as well as the costs of erection, purchase of explosives trucks and the "operability enablement" of such a remote site are important in the sense that they form a part of the determination of the initial capital outlay as well as the future cash flow for the calculation of the net present value and the internal rate of return on the project. A large portion of the operations cost is represented by the transportation of raw materials from the manufacturing plants to the different remote sites. This action, in the Sasol Explosives environment, is the only link in the logistics system that has been outsourced. The investigation into the outsourcing showed that there was no clear reason why this function was outsourced and, likewise, no apparent reason why it cannot be "insourced" again. A recommendation has been made that a full-scale investigation into the possible insourcing of the transport function be launched. In the process of establishing the future cash flow, an investigation was launched into the income generated by the project. It was found that the investigation into income could be divided into two parts: the first, the required return, is coupled to risk; and the second is the actual sale of products. Sales volume (tonnage) and the accompanying price per ton "combine" to form sales income. Finally, price per ton, in turn, is used to "balance" the equation that has been investigated. This price is used as the figure quoted to potential customers. This equation, as well as the sum total of the investigation, was used as the basis for the development of a model or Excel spreadsheet.

Analysis of 2-axis pencil beam sonar microbathymetric measurements of mine burial at the Martha's Vineyard Coastal Observatory

Gotowka, Brendan Reed. 09 1900 (has links)
CIVINS / The changing state of warfare has driven the US Navy's area of operations closer to shore into littoral coastal waters. Mine Warfare has been proven as an extremely effective means of battlespace control in these waters. Mines can be inexpensively mass produced and rapidly deployed over large areas. The most common type of mine in use is the bottom placed mine, an object with simple geometry that sits on the seafloor. These mines often exhibit scour induced burial below the seafloor, making detection through traditional mine hunting methods difficult or impossible, while the mines themselves remain lethal. The Office of Naval Research (ONR) has developed a computer model that predicts the extent of mine burial to aid mine hunting and mine clearing operations. Investigations under ONR's Mine Burial Program are presently being conducted to calibrate and validate this model. This thesis uses data from the deployment of an acoustically instrumented model mine near the Martha's Vineyard Coastal Observatory in part of a larger, 16 total object investigation. A 2-axis pencil beam sonar was deployed concurrently with the mine to obtain microbathymetric measurements of the scour pit development and the progression of mine burial. Data correction techniques to correct for beam pattern induced bathymetry errors and a transformed coordinate system are detailed within. An analysis of scour pit dimensions includes scour depth, area, and volume as well as a look into percent burial by depth as a characteristic measurement important for operational mine hunting. The progression of mine burial is related to the wave climate, unsteady flow hydrodynamic forcing, and bed-load transport. The analysis examines the relative roles of these mechanisms in the scour-infill-bury process.

Hybrid Nanostructures for Artificial Machine Olfaction

Oakes, Landon Joseph 01 May 2012 (has links)
The detection of low level concentrations of particles in a gaseous environment is of importance to many fields, especially Homeland Security. The ability to identify ppb concentrations of explosives and their degradation products can aid in the detection of improvised explosive devices (IEDs), ammunition dumps, or hidden explosives. One method of accomplishing this task is through the use of an array of chemiresistors in an electronic nose device. For this study, chemiresistors were constructed using 3-D silica nanospring mats with a contiguous film of ZnO nanocrystals and ZnO nanocrystals decorated by metallic nanoparticles. Samples with an average grain size of 15nm were found to be the most responsive and upon exposure to a gas flow of 20% O2 and 80% N2 with ~200 ppm of acetone and an operational temperature of 400 oC produced a relative change in conductance by a factor of 400. The addition of metal nanoparticles onto the surface of the ZnO nanocrystals produced a relative change in conductance by a factor of 1100. Under optimum conditions, sensing elements of this design exhibited well-defined spikes in conductance upon exposure to explosive vapors (TNT, TATP) at the ppb levels. The use of a pattern recognition system allowed discrimination between three analyte chemicals.
