Scruffy Masculinities : A visual analysis of gay bear representations in Walter Van Beirendonck’s runways

Suman, Iulian January 2021 (has links)
Despite the vast research regarding non-conformative bodies, there is little material on the gay bear representation in fashion modeling. This thesis investigates the bear embodiment in the runway shows of Walter Van Beirendonck, respectively W&LT Autumn/Winter 1995–1996 Paradise Pleasure Productions, W&LT Autumn/Winter 1996-1997 Wonderland, Walter Van Beirendonck Spring/Summer 2010 Wonder, and Walter Van Beirendonck Spring/Summer 2011 Read My Skin. Critical visual analysis follows the gay bear symbolism in the video recordings of the runways, revealing how it challenges the fashion industry’s body standards and, in a broader frame, the dictates of hegemonic masculinity. The concepts of gender performativity and biopower provide the theoretical frame of the study, while Madison Moore’s theory of ‘fabulousness’ and José Esteban Muñoz’s understanding of ‘utopia’ lead to the articulation of performances both masculine and queer. The findings lead to the discovery of non-dual and body-inclusive gay bear embodiments that challenge the relationship between body and dress and can extend beyond the limits of the runway.

Challenging Hegemonic Masculinity Through the Use of Epic Fantasy : Using The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson to analyze hegemonic masculinity and its potential for classroom appropriation.

Jakobsson, Viktor January 2022 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to argue that using the novel The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson to explore the concepts of gender roles, with masculinity and its hegemonic aspect at the forefront, through the fields of gender studies and gender pedagogy, will provide grounds for meaningful classroom discussions and activities in the Swedish upper secondary school by drawing parallels between the fictional society presented in the novel and our own. Three main traits of hegemonic masculinity are analyzed and applied to the characters Kaladin, Dalinar and Jasnah, namely physical assertiveness, egocentric individualism, and domination. The novel’s potential for use within the Swedish upper secondary school, specifically in the course English 7, is analyzed. The domination trait of hegemonic masculinity was found noticeably absent in the three protagonists, while this trait could be found amongst the novel’s antagonists. Potential was found in using the novel to lessen the effects of the boy crisis in the Swedish school system.

A Worm in an Apple : An analysis of hegemonic masculinity, personal responsibility and the nature of the Shadow in Ursula K. Le Guin’s A Wizard of Earthsea

Maddy Hansson, Gwendolyn January 2022 (has links)
In this paper, Ursula K Le Guin’s 1968 fantasy novel, A Wizard of Earthsea will be investigated in two ways. First, through a thematic analysis of the primary antagonist through a deconstructive close-reading technique. Second, through a pedagogic analysis of the depiction of hegemonic masculinity in the novel. The thematic analysis reveals that Le Guin departs from the typical expectations of the fantasy genre to highlight the themes of accepting personal responsibility and acknowledging the consequences of one’s actions, values which are reflected in the Swedish national curriculum. The pedagogic analysis of Le Guin’s treatment of hegemonic masculinity in school culture has the further potential to be used in an EFL classroom setting as part of a teaching unit problematizing the performance of hegemonic masculinity in modern school culture. This is also reflected in the central content for the English Syllabus. /
Due to Covid-19 restrictions/precautions, the final presentation seminar took place over Zoom.

En ny mansbild? : En kvalitativ studie av de manliga huvudkaraktärerna i serierna Skam och Normala människor / A new male image? : A qualitative study of the male main characters in the series Skam and Normal People

Karlsson, Wilma, Ekmark, Vendela January 2021 (has links)
In this essay, we analyze the male main characters in the drama series Skam (2016) and Normal People (2020) with the aim of examining whether there are tendencies for a new male image in the media. To investigate this, theoretical perspectives such as representation, stereotypes, gender, heteronormativity and hegemonic masculinity were used. An analysis scheme was created based on hegemonic masculinity and research on a new male image in the media. To analyze the material, qualitative content analysis in the form of semiotics was used as a method. The results showed that the male main character from Skam maintained more character traits from the hegemonic masculinity compared to the male main character from Normal people. The character from Normal people showed more tendencies from a new male image.

“Something has to give”: Exploring The Negotiation of Masculinity and Identity of Gay Males in Sport

Black, Jeffrey J. 11 1900 (has links)
The institution of sport has an extensive history of heterosexism, and homophobia, making sport a problematic and unsafe space for gay-identified males. The lack of representation of gay athletes in professional sports highlights the risks associated with openly identifying one’s sexual identity within athletic settings, as gay-identified players often are faced with discrimination and harassment. As a result, gay-identified athletes may choose not to be open about their sexual identity or leave sports altogether as a way to avoid being subjected to discrimination and marginalization within athletics. Grounded in queer theory, and engaging in phenomenology and arts-informed inquiry, this study seeks to explore the ways in which gay-identified males involved in sport negotiate their identies and masculinities. After each participant was interviewed, he wrote a letter to his past self as a way to share what he had come to learn about his process of coming into his own identity and negotiating masculinity. The study interrogates how gay males experience team-based competitive sports differently than individually-based sports and personal fitness activities. Additionally, it explores the personal process of defining and embracing masculinity. Deconstructing the definition of hegemonic masculinity, this study explores how masculinity can be understood in multiple ways. Changing the heterosexist and homophobic discourse that informs the organization of sport on multiple levels creates more opportunities for gay-identified athletes to be welcomed into the arena of sport and safely access the benefits associated with competitive sports and healthy active living activities. This study brings light to the emotional and psychosocial consequences that stem from homophobia and heterosexism’s dominance in our society. The perpetual discrimination and marginalization faced by those who identify as gay males highlights the need for social work’s involvement in justice-oriented research and practice as a way to bring greater equality and equity into our communities. / Thesis / Master of Social Work (MSW)

The macho culture in change : A qualitative study on male professional youth and junior coaches’ perspective of men´s ice hockey as a fostering environment

Lindquist, Mattias January 2023 (has links)
Ice hockey has traditionally been a sport where the culture revolves around male norms and values, which in many cases has led to, among other things, derogatory views of women and homophobia. The purpose of the study was to investigate hockey coaches' experiences and perception of the macho culture's impact on ice hockey as a nurturing environment with a focus on how they believe they should work in order not to reproduce the macho culture. The data collection was carried out with the help of six semi-structured interviews with professional youth and junior coaches from the top two leagues in Sweden (SHL and Hockeyallsvenskan). The results show that the coaches feel that there has been a change and that the macho culture is not as evident as before, that hockey's reputation of being macho is outdated and that the culture is no worse than in other sports. In working against the macho culture, the coaches believe that the most important thing they can do is to have a close relationship with their players to create a secure environment where individuals dare to show vulnerability and that the coaches themselves are role models in this regard. The coaches also believe that it is important to have clear communication regarding rules and values and the consequences if these are broken.

Decir casa, cielo, bosque.

Granero Ferrer, Alejandro 10 January 2022 (has links)
[EN] This doctoral thesis, entitled Saying home, sky, forest. Essay on the habitability of the world and the limits of visuality brings together the research carried out during the period between February 2018 and July 2021. This research is inscribed in the artistic practice, so it gathers different processes, gestures and projects developed during these years. Starting from our condition of "inhabitants of the outside" and "speakers of saying", we have traversed different realities whose apprehension is impossible to carry out by means of seeing. Throughout the work we have noted the impossibility of accessing a pure happening, approaching this fact on the basis of the unbridgeable distance between world and language. A gap that has been worked on, especially on the basis of the visual configuration of reality and the privilege of the sense of sight in our cultural context. Through the study of Western hegemonic visualities, we have attended to the crisis of visual epistemology and the establishment of a failure in the visual knowledge of the world. In a way, this has allowed us to ask ourselves about other forms of inhabitation that harbour these factors. In order to carry out this approach, we have constructed a fragmentary narrative in which we propose ways of articulating that which escapes seeing and in which we expose the different artistic processes carried out. All of this is presented in relation to certain statements of the visual regimes that order and configure our gaze. The way in which this fragmentary account has been constructed tries not to preconfigure the meaning of the research from a previous conceptual framework. In this same sense, the narrative does not seek to feed binary differentiations between theory and practice or between creation and non-creation, artistic and non-artistic. The writing employed does not occur at the margins of the work itself, but rather, as part of it, seeks to privilege the varied nature of the narrative and the plurality of voices and processes that have been involved in the research. In short, through multiple texts, processes and experiences, we have been able to explore other visual logics outside the principles of clarity, transparency and legibility. This has allowed us to develop a research exercise based on artistic practice, testing different ways of inhabiting, apprehending, saying, articulating and seeing the world.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the methods used in the treatment of men who have perpetrated intimate partner violence (IPV), how perpetrators are described in research, and which factors are identified as important in treatment. The study uses a general literature review method, and the empirical data consists of 11 scientific articles. The data is analyzed using thematic analysis. The theoretical frameworks for the study are hegemonic masculinity, the normalization process, and social learning theory. The thematic analysis identified two main themes with a total of five subthemes. The first main theme is "The Importance of the Therapist" with the subthemes "Alliance Building" and "Treatment Methods". The second main theme is "The Perpetrator" with the subthemes "Motivation for Treatment", "Emotional Competence" and "Mental Health". The study describes what research says about the roles and conditions of both the therapist and the perpetrator, and their importance in treatment. The results of the study are discussed in relation to the research questions and the theoretical frameworks.
