Naquela época, foi criticada, mesmo por outros indígenas, por suas atitudes consideradas assimiladas. O principal objetivo desta tese é analisar os aspectos que representam resistência e assimilação na obra de Zitkala-Ša, com foco na resistência. Defende-se, neste trabalho, a tese de que as ações, que aparentemente são assimiladas, como o discurso elogioso e o uso da língua inglesa, podem ser lidas como uma agenda de resistência e de sobrevivência do indígena. Zitkala-Ša executou sua resistência por meio da mistura de gêneros e estilos literários, do discurso político e, principalmente, por meio do uso de técnicas indígenas tradicionais, como a manipulação do simbolismo e da metáfora, a arte de contar histórias e seu ajuste à língua inglesa e aos acontecimentos contemporâneos. A recuperação de heróis e seres mitológicos, o registro de cerimônias, a forma de educação e transmissão do conhecimento Dakota e a figura do trickster marcam a instância e a sobrevivência da cultura indígena. Por um longo período ela foi considerada uma indígena assimilada, mas a escrita autobiográfica e as lendas indígenas que Zitkala-Ša recuperou de sua infância são denúncias contra as políticas do governo, como a lei de distribuição de terras e as instituições como os internatos indígenas (boarding schools) e serviram como modelos a escritores indígenas modernos / Zitkala-Ša, an author of Native American ascendance, achieved some success during the time when she was alive. At that period, she was criticized even by her peers for her actions and writing sometimes considered assimilated. The main objective of this dissertation is to analyze the aspects that represent resistance and assimilation in Zitkala-Ša`s work, focusing on resistance. This dissertation addresses the fact that the actions such as laudatory discourse and the use of the English language, which are seemingly considered assimilated, can be read as a resistant agenda of survival. Zitkala-Ša accomplished this by mixing literary genres, such as fiction, essays, political discourse and the use of Native American traditional techniques, as storytelling, manipulation and adjustment of the English language, the figure of the trickster, the recalling of oral legends and characters, and the insistance on issues related to the Native American culture. For a long period, she was regarded as an assimilated Indian, but her work can also be approached as a sign of resistance to the governmental policies against the Native people, to the assimilationist projects of the boarding schools in particular, and to the Euro-American culture in general. The study of her work is relevant today because she is a role model for current Native writers and for other people who were silenced

As trajetórias e as obras de dois grandes ícones da música do século XX, Heitor Villa-Lobos e Manuel de Falla, identificados como os maiores expoentes do nacionalismo em seus países, dão fundamento a esta comparação. Em primeiro lugar, estudamos como algumas "constâncias" identificadas pelos estudiosos do fenômeno do nacionalismo se manifestaram no Brasil e na Espanha. Em seguida, a partir das trajetórias de nossas duas personagens principais, observamos como os ideais nacionalistas se desenvolvem nesses países, e quais foram as soluções propostas em cada caso para os problemas da criação de uma identidade musical nacional. Nesse sentido, observamos como, à medida em que os ideais nacionalistas ganham contornos mais nítidos, as trajetórias de Villa-Lobos e Falla, que haviam partido de um início de carreira semelhante e que tiveram Paris como uma primeira rota de fuga, vão progressivamente se distanciando. Se Falla, por um lado, para concretizar o seu projeto nacionalista, prefere a reclusão e a atuação nos bastidores do meio musical espanhol, Villa-Lobos, por outro, insere-se no aparato público, comandando um grande programa disciplinador das massas através da doutrina do canto orfeônico. A apreciação musical das obras também nos ajudam a entender as respostas musicais dadas por esses compositores ao problema da criação de uma identidade nacional. Ao longo de suas trajetórias, estas obras ganham novos contornos que finalmente acabam por servir de parâmetros para as gerações seguintes de músicos brasileiros e espanhóis / Abstract: This work comprises a study of musical nationalism from a comparative perspective founded in the careers and works of two icons of 20th-century music, Heitor Villa-Lobos and Manuel de Falla, who are considered the greatest exponents of musical nationalism in their countries. First, it considers how "continuities" of nationalism, as identified by scholars, have manifested themselves in Brazil and Spain. Later, from the career paths of both musicians, it observes how nationalistic ideals developed in the two countries, and what solutions were proposed for the problems put forward by the creation of a national musical identity in each case. In this sense, it notes how, as the nationalistic ideals gained clearer definition, the paths of Villa-Lobos and Falla, who faced similar beginnings to their careers and shared Paris as their first escape, progressed. Whereas Falla, achieved his nationalistic project in reclusion, preferring to remain behind the scenes of the Spanish musical environment, Villa-Lobos inserted himself in the governmental machine, commanding a huge program to discipline the masses through the doctrine of Orpheonic singing. The musical appreciation of their works also helps us understand the musical answers given by those composers to the problem of creating a national identity. This thesis examines images of women shopping in the art of Kenneth Hayes Miller and Reginald Marsh during the 1920s and 1930s. New York City's Fourteenth Street served Kenneth Hayes Miller and Reginald Marsh, respectively, as a location generating the inspiration to study and visually represent its contemporaneity. Of particular interest to this thesis are relationships between developments in shopping and the images of women shopping in and around Fourteenth Street that populate the paintings of Miller and Marsh. Although, as Ellen Todd Wiley has shown, the emerging notion of the New Woman helped to shape female identity at this time, what remains unstudied are dimensions that geographically specific, historical developments in shopping contributed to the construction of female identity which, this thesis argues, Marsh and Miller related to, by locating in, the department store and bargain store.

Este trabalho foca-se especialmente na análise dos conceitos de Homem e Humanismo em Rivet e Duarte, procurando demonstrar que sua construção se deu obedecendo aos desejos, interesses e contextos de seus produtores. Relidas na atualidade, tais concepções podem abrir espaços para repensarmos termos que são caros à Arqueologia / Abstract: This research aims to analyze how speech construction about Human and Humanism were made by Paul Rivet and Paulo Duarte, intellectuals who deeply influenced the development of some of the main pillars of academic Archaeology in Brazil. This research aims to show that a concept is not an unchangeable and natural truth, but it is a discursive construction that should be investigated to stand out its historicity and politic uses, and therefore its transformation and adaptation capability. The main focus of this paper is to analyze the concepts of Man and Humanism in Rivet e Duarte, trying to show that the construction of these concepts were based on obeying the producers 'desires, interest and contexts. Human/Nature: American Literary Naturalism and the Anthropocene

“Human/Nature: American Literary Naturalism and the Anthropocene” examines works of fiction from the genre of American literary naturalism that sought to represent the emergence of the environmental crisis known today as the Anthropocene. Reading works by Jack London, Frank Norris, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and Charles W. Chesnutt, I show how the genre’s well-known tropes of determinism, atavism, and super-individual scales of narration were used to create narratives across vast scales of space and time, spanning the entire planet as well as multi-epochal stretches of geologic time. This reading expands existing definitions of American literary naturalism through a combination of literary analysis, engagement with contemporary theory, and discussion of the historical context of proto-Anthropocenic theories of the late-19th and early-20th centuries. Whereas most earlier understandings of naturalism have focused on human nature as it is determined by environmental conditions, I follow the inverse: the impact of collective human action on the physical environment. Previous definitions of naturalism have only told part of the story of determinism, making it impossible to recognize until now the genre’s unusual capacity to aesthetically capture humanity’s pervasive impact on the planet. Each of the dissertation’s four chapters focuses on a single author, a single aesthetic strategy, and a single problematic in Anthropocene discourse. My first chapter argues that Jack London’s late work (1906–1916) balanced his attempts to understand the human as a species with a growing interest in sustainable agriculture, resulting in a planetary theorization of environmental destruction through careless cultivation. But London’s human-centered environmental thinking ultimately served his well-known white supremacism, substantiating recent critiques that the Anthropocene’s universalism merely reproduces historical structures of wealth and power. Rather than the human per se, Frank Norris put his focus on finance capitalism in his classic 1901 novel The Octopus, embodying the hybrid human/natural force that he saw expanding over the face of the planet in the figure of the Wheat, a cultivated yet inhuman force that is as much machine as it is nature. I show how Norris turned Joseph LeConte’s proto-Anthropocenic theory of the Psychozoic era (1877) into a Capitalocene aesthetics, a contradictory sublimity in which individuals are both crushed by and feel themselves responsible for the new geologic force transforming the planet. While London and Norris focus on the destructive capacities of human agency, Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s 1915 novel Herland takes a utopian approach, depicting a society of women with total control of their environment that anticipates conceptions of a “good Anthropocene.” Gilman built on the theories of sociologist and paleobotanist Lester Ward as well as her own experience in the domestic reform movement to imagine a garden world where the human inhabitants become totally integrated into the non-human background. Yet Gilman’s explicitly eugenic system flattens all heterogeneity of culture, wealth, and power into a homogenous collective. My final chapter builds on the critique of the Anthropocene’s universalism that runs through the preceding chapters by asking whether and how the Anthropocene can be approached with more nuance and less recourse to universals. I find an answer in the stories of Charles W. Chesnutt’s The Conjure Woman (1899) and the theory of the Plantationocene, which sees the sameness of the Anthropocene not as “natural” but as produced by overlapping forms of racial, economic, and biological oppression. Registering this production of homogeneity and its counterforces at once, Chesnutt models what I call Anthropocene heteroglossia, juxtaposing multiple dialects and narrative forms in stories set on a former plantation, depicting heterogeneous social ecologies as they conflict and coexist in markedly anthropogenic environments.

“Groyse goyim”: On the Translation of World Literature into Yiddish, 1869-1935

This dissertation explores the history of the translation of world literature into Yiddish through a series of interconnected case studies, stretching from the “founding” decade of modern Yiddish literature through its interwar acme. It features diachronic studies of single translator-authors (Sh. Y. Abramovitsh; Der Nister; Isaac Bashevis Singer) which consider the relationship between translations and original writing; synchronic views of transformative moments in Yiddish literary (translational) history across its multiple centers (1903; 1910; New York, Warsaw, Moscow); and “distant” readings of periodicals and anthologies with an eye to their particular explicit and implicit translation theories and practices as well as to the role of editors and publishers (Sholem Aleichem; Avrom Reyzen) in shaping both real and imagined literary markets. Throughout, it mobilizes the chronically-neglected genre of homegrown Yiddish literary criticism and theory (I.L. Peretz, Chaim Zhitlowsky, Moyshe Litvakov) in the hopes of understanding the shifting stakes and meanings of translation on the terms of translators, authors, critics, and readers themselves. By attending to the ways in which translations functioned as both sources of livelihood and engines of literary growth, this dissertation examines the desired and intermittently realized modernization and “normalization” of Yiddish literature on the world stage.

The main purpose of this study will be to analyze the impressionistic style and techniques of Debussy, how the idiom came to be, and the influence of this particular idiom on two American composers. For thorough understanding, the poetic and artistic backgrounds of impressionism must be brought out; the biography of the man who originated the idiom, as well as his aesthetic theories, must be briefly covered. More objectively, from biographies and various other studies the techniques peculiarly impressionistic will be listed, and analysis will be made of several of the Debussy songs from various periods of his composition.
