Investigating the parallels between disciplinary/bio-power and cyber-corporate empireTaljaard, Darren January 2012 (has links)
Strong parallels exist between the formation of subjectivity through the disciplinary/bio-power technologies of the 18th/19th centuries – which Michel Foucault identified in his books Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison, and The History of Sexuality Volume 1: The Will to Knowledge – and the 20th/21st century formation of subjectivity effected through Apple. Inc and Google. Inc operating systems and products. These systems and products similarly serve to canalize and ‗discipline‘ the pursuit and exchange of information, in a way that is constitutive of a new cyber-variant of disciplinary/bio-power subjectivity.

Foucault's Foundationless Democratic TheoryCarter, Kelly A. 12 1900 (has links)
I examine a key shift in Michel Foucault's political philosophy from a position in which he was a staunch anti-humanist, to a final position in which he advocated not only the ability of the subject to influence his political condition, but also the individual freedoms assured by a democratic form of government. I begin by summarizing his overall critique of the post-Enlightenment West, and then explain how his observation of the Iranian Revolution served as a key turning point concerning his attitude towards the subject. Next, I elaborate on the direction of Foucault's late writings and examine how his new conceptualization of the subject leads him to embrace a democratic political system albeit free from Enlightenment philosophical foundations. I conclude by critiquing Foucault's foundationless democratic theory on the basis that it would ultimately undermine the individual freedoms and aesthetic development that he seeks to protect.

A partir destas reflexões tentamos redefinir o caráter ético do conceito de filosofia como "terapia" / Abstract: This thesis intend at fírst: to rebuild in an arguable way the ethics considerations of Wittgenstein, and second: to point out the relations that have those considerations wíth the notions of language and subjectivity to this philosopher supported along his works. We believe that has a strong relation among subjectivity, ethics and language, and this relation changes between the two periods that have been used to separate his thought. Therefore, following up the ethical considerations of Wittgenstein it will make
us to see how those considerations are related with the notion of philosophy that he had and above ali, to specify the statement of "grammatical therapy". From those reflective considerations we tried to give a new definition of ethical character by the philosophy's concept as "therapy" / Doutorado / Doutor em Filosofia

An analytical study of Hans Werner Henze's Fifth symphonyGascon, Belinda 01 January 1980 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to present a systematic view of Henze’s stylistic characteristics in areas of form, melodic material and series, rhythm and meter, harmony, texture, and orchestration. The wide range of style exhibited by Henze will be brought to light in this study. Mention of certain stylistic traits in common with other well-known composers, such as Schoenberg, Webern, Stravinsky, and Bartok will be made. Finally, the thesis will show that Henze does not adhere to any strict principle of music composition but allows rather his own innate musical sense and desire for expression to guide him.
