The purpose of this study is to trace the evolution of prose poetry in the work of Ricardo Güiraldes and to extract and examine the prose poems that he inserted into his novels. In the first chapter an attempt is made to show which men and their work encouraged Güiraldes to use prose poetry as a medium. The second chapter deals with the audience Güiraldes aimed to please, and with their reaction to his early prose poems. The following chapters aim to demonstrate what happened to the prose poetry of Ricardo Güiraldes after his audience disappointed him. These last chapters are listed in order as the novels were completed by Güiraldes and bear the titles of those novels. In order to decide what Güiraldes considered a "prose poem", it was necessary to complete beforehand a study of the work of Güiraldes published as poetry. The Committee on Instruction in Agriculture, Home Economics and Mechanic Arts of the Association of Land-Grant Colleges has undertaken a study of the methods employed in conducting examinations in all Land-Grant Colleges, hoping thereby to get some suggestions which will be helpful to the colleges, especially in connection with their efforts to improve the teaching of agriculture, home economics and mechanic arts. The writer was designated to make this study at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and has taken the liberty of extending the study to all departments of the institution offering class work, with the object of showing the actual methods used in each department and variations, if any, between departments. / M.S.

The purpose of this study is to discover the significance of certain standard tests given at the V. P. I. to freshmen, the relation of test results to grades, and especially the indications of the test given in the English department. For this reason high school grades in English were included. The data available were not entirely such as would be obtained in a controlled experiment, and the result sought was the utilization of data at hand. The tests used were as follows: The Iowa State Test for Chemical Aptitude. The Iowa State Test for Chemical Training. The Iowa State Test for Physics Aptitude. The Cross English Test: scores in this test had been used as the basis for a division of the freshman class into three groups. The procedure followed was to compute correlations by the Otis method, and to make distribution curves for the several groups of data. Average high school grades in English were secured from the college records. The effect of the use of test scores in a hypothetical program for college entrance requirement was also considered. Comparisons were made with significant results from the University of Virginia and from other sources. / M.S.
