Jean Eustache : génétique et fabrique / Jean Eustache : genetics And WorkSudoh, Kentaro 02 March 2016 (has links)
The dissertation conducts a genetic study of Jean Eustache’s work (1938-1981) as seen through his completed films as well as unfinished projects and drafts. In being based on archives, so far undeveloped (Cinémathèque française, Inathèque, IMEC and personal collections), carrying out interviews with his former producers, directors of photography, assistants, actors, collaborators, friends, or family, and in analyzing not only his movies but also his film scripts, director’s memos or production files, the dissertation reconstructs Eustache’s whole creative journey with its twists and turns. As analysis of creation, the method seeks to trace in the most documented manner possible the process that gave rise to Eustache’s œuvre. How are connected his everlasting autobiographical undertaking and the various conditions of productions? What has leaded him to produce the filmic manifesto Number Zero (1971)? How are The Mother and the Whore (1973) and My Little Loves (1974) produced almost simultaneously? How was born the idea for experimental film essays such as A Dirty Story (1977) or Alix’s Photos (1980)? How one can create originally within both the author cinema and Public Television? This doctoral study replies to these factual questions, which enable to clarify Jean Eustache’s aesthetic and cinematic specific choices.

This dissertation shows the “destruction of the box” consequences in residential project. The work investigates a set of “single-family residences” projected in XX century. These houses were elected for presenting a common characteristic: to be decurrently of the “destruction of the box”, initiated from the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, who "destroys the conventional box" without abandoning the orthogonality of lines. From the "destruction of the box", in the beginning of century, a new class of elements was produced, more generic and abstract. With the Van Doesburg´s and Rietveld´s Neoplastic architecture (1920), the wall appears as an element in the composition of the forms. Firstly, with a bibliographical revision, the work approaches a fast trajectory in the composition, since the classical architecture, until the revision of elements in the modern vanguard, and approaches the beginning of the Neoplasticism. A research considered the hypothesis, where the investigated residences follow the constructive logic of the Neoplasticism. From there, through the inquiry of spaces characteristics, formal and compositive, the results had been grouped in chapters, gotten through the verification of projects of five selected architects: Mies van der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, Eduardo Souto de Moura and João Álvaro Rocha.

and reflects human feelings of a certain time, in prose and verse. Thus, it reflects
humanity history with all its social, emotional and scientific caracteristics. A
dialogue between science and literature becomes natural, since they both drink
from the same source: the man.
We studied Almada Negreiros works, accenting their tests, considering the
Orfeu Generation and the Vanguard Movements, which innovated the arts. We
considered a possible conjunction with Émile Zola naturalism. This accent makes
possible a science history with an interface between literature and science in the

Banqueiros anarquistas : o romance no Grupo OrpheuRückert, Gustavo Henrique January 2013 (has links)
This paper aims to analyze the social importance of aesthetic forms approached in modern novels by artists who formed the Orpheu group, which was responsible for the first modernism movement in Portugal. The corpus of analysis of this work is composed by the literary works The ironing girl (A engomadeira), published in 1917 by José de Almada Negreiros; Lucio’s confession (A confissão de Lúcio), published in 1914 by Mário de Sá-Carneiro; and The book of disquiet (Livro do desassossego), a posthumous publication authored by Fernando Pessoa. For this purpose, several theories that link novel to society are adopted, giving greater attention to The rise of the novel, by Ian Watt. According to this author, the elements that characterized the traditional novel in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries are material signs that respond to the process of consolidation of the bourgeois class. Therefore, the analyzed texts seek to break the elements mentioned by Watt, which reveal an attitude of subversion of bourgeois signs when they start to decline in the European context, with the exception of Portugal. Thus, the novels of these three artists are characterized as a political intervention.

The choral cycle : a conductor’s guide to four representative worksThorngate, Russell 06 July 2011 (has links)
This study explores the choral cycle as a genre and analyzes in depth four representative choral cycles, all of them American, and all composed in the twentieth century. Choral cycles are multi-movement choral works intended by their composers to be performed as sets. The term “choral cycle” has been used for only about a hundred years; similar genres include song cycles, for solo voice, and cantatas, usually for soloists and choir. Choral cycles, however, typically use several poetic texts unified by common theme or common author, and do not typically contain solo movements. The evolution of the use of the term by some composers and publishers has been inconsistent, but it seems to have been an effort to describe compositions that were inadequately described by other genre names. This study shows that composers and musicologists have used the term with increasing frequency. The four choral cycles analyzed in this study are The Hour-Glass by Irving Fine, American Madrigals by Kirke Mechem, Voices by Stephen Paulus, and Five Hebrew Love Songs by Eric Whitacre. These four cycles demonstrate widely
divergent compositional techniques, performing force requirements, and uses of text. As such, they illustrate the wide range of possibilities within this genre.
In addition to the detailed analysis of the aforementioned choral cycles, this study also provides background into the historical predecessors of choral cycles. An appendix offers a list of numerous other choral cycles for consideration. / Choral cycles in historical context -- The hour glass by Irving Fine -- American madrigals by Kirke Mechem -- Voices by Stephen Paulus -- Five Hebrew love songs by Eric Whitacre -- Summary and conclusions. / School of Music

Vulvan, förlossningen och mötet med modergudinnan : Om Monica Sjöös målning God giving birthBjörk, Chanda January 2010 (has links)
This study is about the artist Monica Sjoo’s (1938-2005) painting God giving birth (1968) that was accused of being blasphemous and obscene in the early 1970s. God giving birth could have had much in common with Niki de Saint-Phalle’s She – a cathedral (1966), both works suggesting a mother goddess image. The main difference however can be found in the fact that Monica Sjoo’s painting had connection to the women’s movement in the 1970s. Monica Sjoo’s artwork responded to other feminist artwork of that period. Among several feminist artists during the period about 1968-1985, an iconography was in use that focused on vulvar imagery, experience of childbirth and goddess images. In particulary the mother goddess was embraced. The female body in art was re-sacred and invested with meaning connected with women’s cycles of birth-death and rebirth and the earth as a mother goddess.

Rhetoric and public action in poetry after 1960Smith, Dale Martin 06 July 2011 (has links)
This dissertation considers the relation between literary documents and public identities, and how U. S. culture is reflected and transfigured by poetry in the United States after 1960. Concerned with epideictic communication in public contexts, this study looks at how private interventions in public spaces can shape attitudes toward cultural phenomena. A secondary concern elucidates the ways literary texts are valued in English departments, bearing critical reflection on rhetorical, literary, and creative pedagogy. Insofar as the epideictic mode prepares individuals for a decision-making process in current democratic situations, this dissertation considers recent examples of strategic public engagements, and provides rhetorical readings of key situations in American social and cultural life since 1960 to illustrate how such methods can bring rhetoric and literature together in contemporary public contexts.
The first of these studies inspects the correspondence and poetry of Robert Duncan and Denise Levertov during the Vietnam War over the uses of poetry as a public document. Public identity and U. S. social practices are explored in the following chapter with the 1970s and ’80s poetry of Lorenzo Thomas and Edward Dorn, whose poems participate in the articulation of tensions between private and public life. Chapter 4 argues that Charles Olson’s poems and letters appearing in the editorial pages of The Gloucester-Daily Times in the 1960s effectively helped bring civic attention to the transformation of public space in Gloucester, Mass. While he interpreted the changes he perceived in Gloucester through literary and historical theories, he framed them within rhetorically motivated communication strategies to deliver new perceptions of what constituted civic value. Chapter 5 concludes by examining more recent attempts by poets to influence public reflection on crucial events that led to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan through digital media, public performance, and civic encounters mediated by fugitive texts. The opening and final chapters introduce my methodology and present the problem of poetry in public contexts, and advocates for reflection within English departments on the rhetorical value of literary texts. / text

The evaluation of contemporary art with art historical and market criteria : the 3C ModelRichter, Till Florian Alexander 25 January 2012 (has links)
For the most recent contemporary art no art historical or price records exist that can testify of its value. However, the market for contemporary art is enormous and the art historical interest in it is equally important. If we can find out how to evaluate contemporary art, it will further the art historical understanding, the market transparence and the sales of contemporary art thus having an influence also on the creation of art (William Grampp).
The art historical verdict and the market verdict are linked. This has been proven by a number of economists (Frey, Galenson, Grampp). The question is how they are linked. Basically, both art history and the market contribute to the creation of value in art. What is it that makes art valuable? What are the criteria used in art history and in the market to evaluate art?
The focus is on European and US American art between 1970 and today.
Evaluation, be it aesthetic or financial, is a process of decision making. Decisions are based on criteria that must be conscious at least after the decision is made (Clement Greenberg). In the art world, certain decision makers are more influential than others. Therefore the dissertation analyzes the most influential positions in art theory and in the art market and distills the essential criteria used.
The dissertation seeks to advance the research on this fundamental question of the evaluation of art through a more comprehensive and interdisciplinary study than those previously undertaken. It presents a model that integrates the most important criteria from both sides and allows a more reliable evaluation of contemporary art.
The 3C Model explains the ensemble of Quality-Value-Price through three criteria: Change, Connectivity and Context (Time, Space, People).
The 3C Model can be used as a general basis in the discourse on value and quality. It is a structural method that can be applied to almost any art from any period.
The model is exercised here using Gerhard Richter, François Morellet, Julian Schnabel, Jeff Koons, Sophie Calle and Pipilotti Rist as examples. / text
