An experimental comparison of a ternary chord keyboard with the QWERTY keyboard

Fathallah, Fadi A. 08 July 2010 (has links)
Chord keyboards use the concept of simultaneous activation of keys to produce single characters. Some chord keyboards have been suggested as potential devices to replace the standard QWERTY keyboard which is now considered the major human-computer interface tool. This study focused on evaluating a new chord keyboard that uses a set of eight ternary (3 state) keys. An experimental comparison of the ternary chord keyboard (TCK) with the QWERTY keyboard was conducted. Two groups of subjects were selected to participate in the study. One group was assigned to the QWERTY keyboard and the other to the TCK. The two groups learned to input a set of 17 characters. Training of each group was similar and the stimuli were identical. The study investigated how the two groups compared in attaining certain performance criteria (speed and accuracy), and how performances compared on both keyboards after fulfilling the criteria. For each group, the number of sessions to reach the criteria was recorded along with speed and accuracy of typing. At the end of the experimental session, subjects rated some features of their respective keyboard. Performances on both keyboards were comparable in all stages with no significant differences revealed. However, executing chords on the TCK was rated significantly more difficult than activating keys on the QWERTY keyboard. / Master of Science

Generating grasping using models based on duality

Dannhardt, Michael 28 July 2010 (has links)
An object model based on the principle of duality where a plane has a point as a dual and a point has a plane as a dual is presented. Using this representation we present methods for performing intersection detection and face overlap checks to determine if a parallel jaw gripper is in a position to execute a valid grasp. Valid grasps are ones physically realizable and can lift an object when it is assumed that the gripping forces and the friction coefficients are large enough to keep the object from slipping. The objects considered are polyhedra and valid grip checks for both convex and concave objects are developed. A generate and test method for synthesizing valid grasp positions is also presented. / Master of Science

Regionalism in South East Asia: a factor analysis approach

Egan, Michelle 21 July 2010 (has links)
The concept of regionalism has been the subject of vast research. However, there have been few empirical studies of South East Asia. Although several authors have examined regionalism on a global scale (Russett 1967), the theoretical constructs have been primarily based on regionalism in Western Europe (Haas 1964). Few of these theories have been applied in the context of South East Asia. The current members of ASEAN were chosen for my research paper. (1) ASEAN includes Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and the Philippines, with the later addition of Brunei in 1984. The research paper was an attempt to the following questions: • What degree of regionalism do the ASEAN countries show with regard to each variable defined as measuring regionalism. An analysis of the usefulness and limitations of each variable will be considered in the study. • What is the significance of regionalism in South East Asia, in terms of current theories in the field of Political Science/International Relations. Data was used from a variety of secondary sources including UNDEX United Nations documents, International Trade Directory and the World Handbook of Political and Social Indicators. The variables were then correlated to check the extent of regionalism in the ASEAN countries. Factor Analysis and Pearson's correlation statistic were used to determine the relationship between variables used to measure regionalism. From the study, the concept of regionalism was defined and measured by multiple indicators. The results indicated that some of the variables used to operationalize and measure regionalism may be inappropriate in an Asian setting. My study found that regionalism in terms of observable cooperation, in domestic and international policy had increased but has not reached the stage of political and economic integration among the ASEAN members. (1) ASEAN stands for the Association of South East Asian Nations. / Master of Arts

Evaluation of a mitochondrial test for the determination of chemical toxicity

Shannon, Robert David 10 June 2012 (has links)
The feasibility of using rat liver mitochondria respiratory parameters as a short-term toxicity test was investigated. Mitochondrial fractions were exposed to six concentrations of five chlorophenols. Respiratory parameters were measured and compared to control experiments. The toxicity of the chlorophenos, measured by the 50% uncoupling concentration (UC50), increased with increasing chloro substitution. The UC50 values for the five chlorophenols were compared to six physicochemical parameters for the same chlorophenols and high degrees of correlation were found (r >/- 0.890). The highest correlation coefficient obtained was with the octanol-water partition coefficient. UC50 values were also compared to nine currently existing short-term toxicity tests. High degrees of correlation were obtained with several of these tests, including bacterial and fish bioassays. From the results of these experiments, the measurement and use of mitochondria respiratory parameters as a short-term toxicity test appears to offer an alternative to currently used short-term toxicity tests, particularly with chemicals having physicochemical characteristics similar to mitochondria uncouplers. / Master of Science

Performance analysis of HDLC protocol operating in asynchronous balanced mode

Kulkarni, Upendra M. 20 November 2012 (has links)
The objective of this work is to analyze the performance of HDLC Balanced Class of Procedures under saturated, full-duplex transmission on error prone links. This thesis extends work done by Bux et al. [8] by considering errors on both the links. Satellite links have long propogation delays compared to terrestrial links, and hence, have longer error recovery times. For such links, errors in acknowledgements have considerable impact on the throughput. In this analysis, the effect of errors in acknowledgements is taken in to consideration. An analytical approach is used to derive performance measures. The concept of "virtual transmission time" introduced by Bux et al is redefined to accommodate the effect of errors in acknowledgements and used in the analysis. Resulting throughput calculations show how various parameters, (e.g. transmission rate, propagation delay, error rate and packet size), interact and determine the performance. / Master of Science

Facteurs psychologiques de l'attrait et de l'appréciation des vidéoclips

Roy, Sylvain, Roy, Sylvain 05 July 2023 (has links)

An evaluation of a cooperative adult basic education program: a naturalistic approach

McLendon, Lennox Lane January 1988 (has links)
In 1978, Suffolk Public Schools and Planters Peanuts entered into an agreement to provide an on-site basic skills instruction program for the Planters' employees called Planters Employee Training (PET). The purpose of this study was to evaluate PET in two areas: (1) worth; the value the employees, management, union, and school system, placed on the program, and (2) merit; the extent to which PET met established standards for work place adult basic education programs. This study evaluated PET using a naturalistic methodology that involved the collection and analysis of qualitative data from three sources: (1) document review; (2) interviews with employee/students, employee/nonstudents, former student/employees, PET administrative and instructional staff, union representation, industry management, first line supervisors in the industry, and school system administrative staff including the superintendent; and (3) observations. The conclusions of this study included a positive worth response by all stakeholder groups with the most dramatic response from the first line supervisors who reported improved employee/student job performance and, more importantly to them, improved attitude toward work as a result of participation in PET. The conclusions regarding merit data included the need for attention to a number of management issues regarding the acquisition of data and involvement of stakeholder groups as assets to planning an instructional program that is responsive to the needs of the employees and the industry. Recommendations include (1) the development of a Policy Committee composed of the key union, management, and school division personnel to focus PET's efforts, and (2) the utilization of the existing advisory committee to assist the PET administrator in planning a responsive instructional program and to involve the union in supporting PET's activities. / Ed. Development of an instrument assessing parenting behaviors

Manning, Mary E. 25 August 2008 (has links)
A paper-and-pencil instrument measuring parenting behaviors in hypothetical child rearing Situations was developed, based on Maccoby and Martin’s (1983) fourfold classification of parenting typologies. Maccoby and Martin’s model was expanded and examined from a circumplex perspective; the dimension of warmth/hostility was separated into categories reflecting various degrees of warmth/hostility (over-protective, responsive, hostile, and rejecting). Likewise, the dimension of control was separated into categories reflecting various degrees of control (restrictive, guiding, permissive, and uninvolved). The instrument developed, or the Parent Behaviors Instrument (PBI), consisted of 20 childrearing vignettes describing typical situations that parents of preschoolers might face, followed by four alternative actions that the parent might take in responding to the vignette. The four alternative actions corresponded to each of the four categories of the degrees of parental warmth/hostility and the four categories of the degrees of parental control discussed previously. The Parent Behaviors Instrument was administered to 59 subjects, who were predominantly white and middle class. Reliability and factor analysis were assessed for the instrument. Validity of the instrument was determined by comparing the results obtained on the instrument to the results obtained from administering Emmerich’s (1969) version of the Parent Attitudes Research Instrument (PARI) and to results obtained from in-home observations of parent-child interactions. Results indicated that the reliabilities of the warmth/hostility and control scales of the PBI and were moderate; reliabilities of the eight component subscales tended to be low. Only items belonging to subscales with higher reliabilities had consistent factor loadings. The PBI subscale designed to measure uninvolved parental behaviors was significantly related to the PARI’s authoritarian control scale score. The PBI subscales measuring responsive and guiding parental behaviors were Significantly related to the authoritative style of parenting, assessed through home observations. / Master of Science

I. Solubility and blend studies of nitrocellulose II. Relaxation properties of thin film coatings: the role of surface topography

Balcells, Eduardo January 1988 (has links)
In the first part of this two part thesis, interaction parameters of nitrocellulose with various solvent systems were investigated by Inverse Gas Chromatography. From these data, the solubility parameters of nitrocellulose were determined at a series of nitration levels which were used to guide the selection of suitable plasticizers for nitrocellulose films. Subsequent dynamic mechanical experiments were then used to evaluate the effectiveness of the blend formulations in broadening the glass transition dispersion of the nitrocellulose blended films; in addition, stress-strain experiments were done in order to evaluate the tensile modulus of the nitrocellulose blends. In the second part of this thesis, both dynamic mechanical thermal analysis and dielectric thermal analysis were used to evaluate the relaxation properties of thin film polysulfone coatings and the effect of substrate surface topography on these properties. Both dynamic mechanical and dielectric thermal analysis revealed that the topographical nature of the substrate influenced the linear viscoelastic properties of the thin film coatings and that the extent of this influence was dependent on the coating thickness. / Master of Science
