Soto Valdés, Rodolfo Ricardo January 2014 (has links)

The Twenty-sixth Regiment North Carolina troops, CSA

McGee, David Howell 09 February 2007 (has links)
This thesis presents a socio-military history of the 26th Regiment North Carolina Troops, C. S. A. The narrative traces the regiment from the creation of the companies that formed the unit through the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse. It focuses on the backgrounds of the men and their experiences in camp, on the march, and in battle. The ten companies in the regiment were raised by men from eight counties across the piedmont and mountain areas of the state. After training in Raleigh during the late summer, the unit served as part of the coastal defenses near Morehead City. In March, 1862, it participated in the unsuccessful defense of New Bern. The regiment temporarily joined the Army of Northern Virginia, serving in the Seven Days campaign and the defense of Petersburg. In the spring of 1863, it returned to North Carolina. There the unit participated in the campaign, led by Gen. D. H. Hill, to retake New Bern. The 26th North Carolina permanently joined the Army of Northern Virginia in May, 1863. After that point, it fought in all the major battles of the army. The regiment’s high, and low, point came at the battle of Gettysburg. During the fighting on the first and third days, it suffered 734 casualties. This was the highest loss by any regiment during the Civil War. The unit rebounded from the losses at Gettysburg, only to lose heavily again at Bristoe Station. The strong efforts of the officers prevented the regiment from being consolidated with another. By May, 1864, its numbers had risen to 760 men. The unit remained with the army during the bloody Overland Campaign, suffering badly at the Wilderness. Once the army reached Petersburg, the 26th North Carolina served in the trenches and with Hill’s corps as a counter to Federal advances. It surrendered with the Army of Northern Virginia in April, 1865, at Appomattox Court House. / Master of Arts

Afterbody drag prediction for conceptual aircraft design

Squire, Douglas J. 19 September 2009 (has links)
With the increasing performance demands placed on aircraft, the nozzle is becoming a much more versatile component. This versatility is increasing the afterbody complexity and the difficulty in afterbody drag prediction. This thesis documents a computationally inexpensive method for estimating the afterbody drag of aircraft during the conceptual design stage. The design and creation of a new hybrid approach to afterbody drag prediction is discussed. This hybrid approach uses the Integral Mean Slope Truncated Method in place of an equivalent body of revolution pressure drag. Corrections or drag deltas are then applied to the Integral Mean Slope Truncated afterbody drag estimate. These drag deltas account for various geometric effects and three-dimensional effects. The resulting prediction method is applicable to both axisymmetric and 2-D nozzles. The hybrid approach has been incorporated into ACSYNT Version 2.0.0 (AirCraft SYNThesis), a conceptual aircraft design tool developed at NASA Ames Research Center and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Comparison of the predictions of the new hybrid approach with those of a more complex and much more computationally expensive method show generally good agreement. / Master of Science

An abstract study of light in architectural design

Reiss, Mark Fredrick January 1992 (has links)
Light is, just as space is. Neither can be created. Both are omnipresent Light and space need not be the heart of an architecture, but they are its soul. Space exists, light exists. Light exists to penetrate space. Light sails through space effortlessly, indifferently illuminating its course and leaving generational light in its wake. Space offers no resistance, only to be discovered. Space cannot be illuminated. A wedge of light traverses the concavity of darkness. The carnet, ice and stone hurled through space; inorganic but alive in its syphilitic journey. This is the extreme contrast: light and dark, matter and void, existence and nonexistence. It is the sun's mass that gives the ice and stone its orbital existence, but it is the sun 's rays that make this ice and stone a carnet. The sun's rays reveal the carnet's spirit, a spirit to which we have given cultural relevance rich in history, religion and art. Construction can be likened to the orbiting ice and stone, architecture to the carnet. When the metamorphic powers of light are consciously inherent in architectural design, the ordinary becomes the extraordinary, the temporal becomes the sublime, the brick of dirt becomes the brick of gold. Left to its own devices, light may transfigure or it may not, but a significant design opportunity has been left to chance. And it is likely that architecture empty of designed light will be more cerebral and less soulful; architecture that exists because of light not through light. We perceive that which exists because of the sensory dependency of sight on light Beyond physiology, space and materiality become architectural tools through light Looking should be elevated to seeing, and seeing elevated to understanding. " ... We were born to light. The seasons are felt through light. We only know the world as it is evoked by light, and from this comes the thought that material is spent light. .. " Louis Kahn Light is as much a building material as are wood, stone and mortar. It is a free but discriminating material: available to all, elusive to many, controlled by few. And light is not captured, but impeded. Through its penetrating, permeating and perpetual nature, light reveals the relationships between form and space. / Master of Architecture

Asencios Lindo, Rodolfo Dynnik 01 April 2014 (has links)
Tesis
