Hydrodynamics and sedimentary structures of antidunes in gravel and sand mixtures

Breakspear, Richard January 2008 (has links)
This thesis firstly reviews the current literature available on antidune bedforms and their hydrodynamic environment, alongside recent studies of the turbulence environments associated with bedforms in unidirectional flow. Based on this understanding, three suites of experiments were designed and conducted to elucidate turbulent flow structure within the standing waves above antidunes and to record the sedimentary response of a loose mobile bed that constituted the antidunes. The first suite of experiments used Acoustic Doppler Velocimetry (ADV) to quantify and characterise the flow structure above fixed bedforms and this was supported by a second suite of experiments that used high-speed video to visualise flow structure. Finally, in the third suite of experiments a loose bed of sediment was allowed to deform into antidunes beneath standing waves and the resultant sedimentary structures were recorded and related to the growth and decay of both standing waves and antidune form. Taken together these data have been interpreted in order to identify and elucidate the bulk-flow, turbulent environment of the flow field above antidunes and the sedimentary structures that characterise the preserved antidune bedding. The ADV experiments have shown that a coherent and organised spatial pattern of turbulence exists above antidune bedforms. Initially, when antidune amplitude is small, turbulent stresses are relatively equally distributed along the entire bed boundary layer, however as antidune amplitude increases there is a progressive concentration of turbulent stresses. Turbulence becomes increasingly concentrated in the near-bed region within the trough between upstream and downstream contiguous antidunes and on the upstream flank of the antidune immediately downstream. Velocities in the trough region drop significantly below the mean velocity elsewhere over antidune bedforms. A clear distinction can be drawn between sand and gravel antidunes, with gravel antidunes having comparatively much lower velocities in the trough region, and turbulence stresses (ejections, sweeps, turbulence Intensity, TKE and Reynolds Stress) an order of magnitude higher than for sand bedforms. Further, experiments over a porous gravel bed indicate levels of near bed turbulence higher than over a gravel-surfaced concrete bedform without interstitial flow. High-speed photography and interpretation of streak images further supports this ADV data. It is proposed that antidunes break when turbulence reaches an ‘intensity’ that constitutes a threshold above which rapid erosion occurs in the trough causing a pronounced increase in turbulent ejections laden with sediment and consequent rapid deposition on the downstream antidune flank. Flow then stalls over the downstream antidune; the standing wave collapses and erodes much of the bed. In terms of distinctive sedimentary structure, three types of bedding were observed in sediment sections taken after mobile bed runs where antidunes had been active. Type I bedding is formed by the erosion of the bed and marks the lowest surface formed by antidune downcutting during active migration or collapse. Type II bedding is formed by turbulent sweeps during antidune growth and migration. However the contrasts in sediment size and type that mark bedding are dependent on the heterogeneity of bed sediment. A third type of downstream dipping, bipartite planar bedding was observed to form under an upstream migrating standing wave. The preservation of a suite of sedimentologic features produced by a period of antidune activity is however dependent on the degree of downcutting and erosion during standing wave collapse.

Generalized Streak Lines: Analysis and Visualization of Boundary Induced Vortices

Wiebel, Alexander, Tricoche, Xavier, Schneider, Dominic, Jaenicke, Heike, Scheuermann, Gerik 12 October 2018 (has links)
We present a method to extract and visualize vortices that originate from bounding walls of three-dimensional time- dependent flows. These vortices can be detected using their footprint on the boundary, which consists of critical points in the wall shear stress vector field. In order to follow these critical points and detect their transformations, affected regions of the surface are parameterized. Thus, an existing singularity tracking algorithm devised for planar settings can be applied. The trajectories of the singularities are used as a basis for seeding particles. This leads to a new type of streak line visualization, in which particles are released from a moving source. These generalized streak lines visualize the particles that are ejected from the wall. We demonstrate the usefulness of our method on several transient fluid flow datasets from computational fluid dynamics simulations.

Contrôle et dynamique d'objets capillaires : impact d'un jet sur un film liquide et effet d'un champ électrique sur une goutte en caléfaction / Control and dynamic of capillary objects : impacts of a jet on a liquid film and effect of an electric field on a drop in calefaction

Kirstetter, Geoffroy 11 July 2014 (has links)
We have studied the impact of a millimetric jet on a soap film. According to the Weber number and the incident angle of the jet, we have shown that the jet may either pass through the film or be absorbed by the film. In the first case, the jet passage through the film deforms the latter. This deformation absorbs a portion of the energy of the jet which is then refracted. In the second case, the jet does not have sufficient amount of vertical movement to pass through the film and he undulates on the film. We then investigated the effect of an electrical field on a Leidenfrost droplet. An interferometric method allowed us to know the three-dimensional profile of the liquid-vapor interface below the drop. Without electrical field, this interface is concave. The application of a low electrical field attracts the circumference of the interface to the substrate. By applying a more intense electrical field, the drop in calefaction comes in contact with the substrate. A current flows in the system and the drop behavior is like a threshold's resistor.

Modélisation numérique de la condensation et de l'évaporation en écoulement turbulent / Numerical modeling of condensation and evaporation in turbulent flows

Léautaud, Vincent 18 December 2018 (has links)
The context of this work is to contribute to the optimization of clean room decontamination cycles by using a new decontamination system. The concept of this system is to decontaminate a volume by condensing hydrogen peroxide vapour on all the inner walls of the volume. Different models of wall condensation and evaporation have been studied, developed and implemented in a CFD code, including simple models as well as more complex models taking into account the shape of the liquid phase at the wall. In parallel, in order to validate the models, an experimental isolator device for decontamination was used to create an experimental steam condensation database. Finally, the validation of this numerical model was carried out by comparing the numerical results provided by the model developed in a digital reproduction of the experimental isolator with the results of the experiments.

Modélisation numérique des impacts de recharges sédimentaires en rivière aménagée : cas du Vieux-Rhin entre Kembs et Breisach / Numerical modelling of sediment feeding impacts engineered rivers : the case of the Old Rhine, between Kembs and Breisach

Béraud, Claire 12 December 2012 (has links)

Μελέτη της υδροδυναμικής της λιμνοθάλασσας Δράνας / The hydrodynamic study of Drana lagoon

Γιάννη, Αρετή 17 May 2007 (has links)
The lagoon of Drana is situated in the river Ebros delta. The lagoon was dried at the 11/5/1987 and has flooded again at the 5/6/2004. Drana covers an area equal to 4km2 and it has a maximum depth of 0.9m. The lagoon is connected with the sea through a 4m deep and 5m wide channel. After the flooding of the lagoon the parameters that were measured are: wind speed, wind direction, sea level, air and water temperature, salinity and relative humidity. These measurements were used for the simulation of hydrodynamics (current speed and current direction) of Drana lagoon. Furthermore, were simulated the surface temperature and salinity. Drana is a lagoon with high salinity and short period of water refreshment. The salinity can be controlled by the fresh water inflow from the Sarantametros and Dekametros drainage channels.
