Analyzing Storage System Workloads

Sikalinda, Paul 01 June 2006 (has links)
Analysis of storage system workloads is important for a number of reasons. The analysis might be performed to understand the usage patterns of existing storage systems. It is very important for the architects to understand the usage patterns when designing and developing a new, or improving upon the existing design of a storage system. It is also important for a system administrator to understand the usage patterns when configuring and tuning a storage system. The analysis might also be performed to determine the relationship between any two given workloads. Before a decision is taken to pool storage resources to increase the throughput, there is need to establish whether the different workloads involved are correlated or not. Furthermore, the analysis of storage system workloads can be done to monitor the usage and to understand the storage requirements and behavior of system and application software. Another very important reason for analyzing storage system workloads, is the need to come up with correct workload models for storage system evaluation. For the evaluation, based on simulations or otherwise, to be reliable, one has to analyze, understand and correctly model the workloads. In our work we have developed a general tool, called ESSWA (Enterprize Storage System Workload Analyzer) for analyzing storage system workloads, which has a number of advantages over other storage system workload analyzers described in literature. Given a storage system workload in the form of an I/O trace file containing data for the workload parameters, ESSWA gives statistics of the data. From the statistics one can derive mathematical models in the form of probability distribution functions for the workload parameters. The statistics and mathematical models describe only the particular workload for which they are produced. This is because storage system workload characteristics are sensitive to the file system and buffer pool design and implementation, so that the results of any analysis are less broadly applicable. We experimented with ESSWA by analyzing storage system workloads represented by three sets of I/O traces at our disposal. Our results, among other things show that: I/O request sizes are influenced by the operating system in use; the start addresses of I/O requests are somewhat influenced by the application; and the exponential probability density function, which is often used in simulation of storage systems to generate inter-arrival times of I/O requests, is not the best model for that purpose in the workloads that we analyzed. We found the Weibull, lognormal and beta probability density functions to be better models.

High-Level Control of Agent-based Crowds by means of General Constraints

Jacka, David 01 February 2009 (has links)
The use of virtual crowds in visual eects has grown tremendously since the warring armies of virtual orcs and elves were seen in The Lord of the Rings. These crowds are generated by agent-based simulations, where each agent has the ability to reason and act for itself. This autonomy is eective at automatically producing realistic, complex group behaviour but leads to problems in controlling the crowds. Due to interaction between crowd members, the link between the behaviour of the individual and that of the whole crowd is not obvious. The control of a crowd's behaviour is, therefore, time consuming and frustrating, as manually editing the behaviour of individuals is often the only control approach available. This problem of control has not been widely addressed in crowd simulation research. We propose, implement and test a system in which a user may control the behaviour of a crowd by means of general constraints. This Constraint Satisfaction system automatically alters the behaviour of the individuals in the crowd such that the group behaviour meets the provided constraints. We test this system on a number of scenarios involving dierent types of agents and compare the effectiveness of this automatic system to an expert user manually changing the crowd. We find our method of control, in most cases, to be at least as effective as the expert user.

Shinabe, Naomi 18 February 2014 (has links)
Palabras clave: libros de texto, análisis del discurso educativo, ideología, identidad, Ciencias Sociales / School textbooks pass on certain knowledge and ideology to a whole generation in a certain territory. This thesis explores part of the knowledge represented in textbooks used for the Social Science subject in compulsory secondary education in Spain and Japan. In particular, it studies, from a critical perspective, two basic questions: 1) how textbooks of both countries portray Europe and Asia, and 2) how own-group identities are discursively built with respect to Europe and Asia’s portrayals. To this purpose, we develop a discourse analysis that focuses especially on semantic strategies that are employed to categorize and to compare different social groups. The results from the analysis of Spanish and Japanese school textbooks are compared with each other and reveal that there are important similarities between textbooks of both countries in the way they portray Europe and Asia. Moreover, we find the discourse is built in order to obtain a positive selfrepresentation of the national group, placing the own country, Spain or Japan, at a proper distance from other social groups, including Europe and Asia. Keywords: school textbooks, educational discourse analysis, ideology, identity, Social Science

Umansky, Andrej 27 May 2016 (has links)

Spectroscopie laser des isotopologues de la molécule d’ammoniac dans le proche infrarouge / Laser spectroscopy of ammonia isotopologues in the near infrared

El Romh, Jamila 18 November 2015 (has links)
The ammonia molecule is one of the most abundant species in the atmosphere of solar planets and isotopic ratio 14N/15N is an important parameter to measure. Spectroscopy of ammonia was recently updated for 14NH3 by Sung et al [JQSRT, vol. 113, 11,1066 2012] in the range 6300-7000 cm−1 and included in HITRAN 2012 database. For the 15NH3 isotopologue, Lees et al [JMS, 251, no. 1-2, 241–251, 2008] assigned some transitions belonging to ν1 + ν3, ν1 + 2ν4 et ν3 + 2ν4 in the range 6412 to 6819 cm−1.Furthermore few line positions and strengths of transitions have been measured by Linsand al [App.Phy. B,102, 293–301, 2011.] with the goal of isotopic ratio measurement. In our work the spectroscopy of 14NH3 and 15NH3 have been extended with the help of an External Cavity Diode Tunable Laser spectrometer (ECDTLS) in the range 6369 to 6578 cm−1 and recordings at four temperatures (150K, 180K, 220K,296K).The spectra has been calibrated and each transition fitted to Voigt profile. Lines positions and strengths have been measured. The intensity ratio temperature dependence have been used to derive the energy of lower state for each transition. A specific treatment has been developed considering pairs of transitions intensities removing pressure dependence. For 14NH3 a transition list has been proposed including line position, strength and lower stateenergy. Compared with Sung et al 's work, the knowledge is increased by one third. For 15NH3 compared to the Lees et al 's work (240 lines), a line list including position and strength for 2604 transitions at room temperature has been proposed for the first time.

Approche expérimentale de valorisation des sédiments de dragage dans des applications de Génie Civil / Experimental approach of valorization of dredged sediments in civil engineering applications

Khezami, Issameddine 03 December 2014 (has links)
The topic on the use of sediments is booming for several years. It mainly concerns marine and river sediments. As for the latter, they have a particular physico-chemical composition with higher amounts of minerals and organic matter compared to marine sediments. Moreover, compared with other parts of French territory, the sediments of the region of Nord –Pas-de-Calais are characterized as "contaminated". That's why many researchs were initiated to find new avenues for development of dredged sediments in civil engineering. The main purpose of this research aims to propose a solution for the use of dredged sediment mainly three river sediments from the Nord-Pas-de Calais region for a valuation on road under layers , eco modeled landscape and the development of cementitious materials. In experimental management point of view, the choice of sediment mixtures was determined by the requirements of each reclamation operation. For this, a mixture of sediment of Deule and Croix was chosen for the valuation landscaped mound, a formulation containing sediments of Deûle and Hem has been studied for a valuation road construction. As for the valuation cementitious materials, we used the sediment of the Deule. A mathematical model of decision support validated the choice of different formulations. This work was done in collaboration with the GPMD and LMCU. The validation of the scientific method has been tested on a semi-industrial scale, through the construction of two experimental boards, which helped, initially, to assess the impact of sediments on valuation and the industrial feasibility on site.

Traitement des sédiments de dragage pour une valorisation dans les matrices cimentaires / Treatment of dredged sediments for reuse into cementitious matrix

Amar, Mouhamadou Al Amine 13 December 2017 (has links)
In France, construction sector annual needings for granular materials are close to 400 million tonnes, of which 96% are natural origin. Therefore it becames highly necessary to find alternatives solutions, in particular by valorisation of industrial by-products (IBP) such as dredging sediments. Marine sediments are designated as a secondary raw material in this study. However, the latter may present some levels of pollution, with the presence of organic matter (5% to 30%), relatively high water content (50% to 200%) and a fairly fine granulometry (≤ 300 µm). Currently, research target to use them as a supplementary mineral addition in concrete after efficient methods of treatment that improve some physico-chemical properties. The aim of this this study is to establish a profitable methodology for the use of sediments in cementitious matrix. We first lead a bibliographical review on this subject. At the experimental level, a physico-chemical characterization was carried out, determining the major parameters to be considered, the effects of the treatment on material properties, the likely impact of the presence of sediments in the cementitious matrix, and an experimental methodology to quantify these various effects. The cementitious materials formulated will be analysed and characterized at four scales: physico-chemical, mechanical, durability and the environmental impact. An analysis of the mechanical results makes possible to assess the activity of this material and to implement adapted formulation laws.

Formulation de matériaux de construction à base de sous-produits industriels avec des méthodes issues de l’intelligence artificielle / Mix design method of building materials based on industrial by-products using artificial intelligence

Abdelfeteh, Sadok 20 October 2016 (has links)
The environmental issue has become a major concern for governments and industry. Effective waste management is part of the priority actions in order to achieve a green circular economy. This efficient management imposes first maximum recovery of waste, knowing the large tonnage produced is different sectors. The field of civil engineering is particularly concerned. The valorization of alternative materials in the field of civil engineering has grown significantly in recent years. However, this practice knows some limitations, including the lack of clear regulations and especially the lack of tools and methods suitable for design of materials including alternatives materials. In this context, the present work focuses on the development of mix design method of building materials based on industrial by-products. This hybrid method combines the Genetic Algorithms (GA) as multi-objective optimization tools and Genetic Programming (GP) in its two versions, classical GP and MGGP (MultiGene Genetic Programming) as modeling tools for complex problems by Machine Learning approach. Specific studies were carried out also or these innovative tools, to demontrates benefits and weaknesses of these tools on these applications in civil engineering. Finally, this method of formulation of building materials based on industrial sub products proposed in this work was tested on two case studies (design of high performance concrete and mortars made of alternative materials) and validated by the laboratory tests. The results are conclusive and promising to generalize the method to other applications of Civil Engineering.
