Refining Topographic Line Maps for Use with Ground Based Night Vision SystemsSapparth, David James January 2002 (has links)
This study aims to refine the current cartographic standards and specifications used by the Australian Defence Force to produce the 1:50 000 scale Topographic Line Map (TLM) so that TLMs can be read with both normal chromatic vision and with achromatic NVG vision. The proliferation and integration of Night Vision Goggles (NVG) into the Australian Army has increased the operating capacity of forces at night. The Australian Army has incorporated NVG into standard operating procedures and training to the effect that Australian military personnel do not operate, at night, without NVG. The increased use of NVG in the Australian Army has required existing systems to be modified or redesigned to be effective within the limitations of NVG. The inability to read TLMs effectively with NVG is an identified problem within the Australian Army. This research has investigated the problems associated with using NVG and the information, which cannot be read on TLMs with NVG. This information was compared to a survey of features on a TLM that are critical for successful military operations. The combined information determined which features on a TLM were to be refined to enable effective reading with NVG. The scope of this research limited refinements to current or previous cartographic standards and specifications used by the Australian Army to produce TLMs. Refinements were limited to symbology, size, and colour and three critical information features of contours, watercourses and vegetation. The problems of cartographic design for a dual vision system (chromatic/achromatic) were investigated and it was determined that the common factor of value contrast exhibits the greatest effect on the refinement process. Prototype TLMs were produced and tested with normal and NVG vision to determine the best cartographic portrayal of the critical information features, without compromising the Figure/ground relationship, balance and cognitive meanings of the TLM. A final product was produced from the prototype experiment results providing a TLM for use with both normal and NVG vision. The refined TLM has changed contours from brown to black without changes to symbology or size and watercourses from 0.1mm width to 0.2mm width without changing colour or symbology. Vegetation was retained at the current standard and specification.

Flamingo/Starry Night in embryonic abdominal sensory axon development of DrosophilaSteinel, Martin Claus January 2008 (has links)
The seven-pass transmembrane atypical cadherin, Flamingo (also known as Starry Night) is evolutionally conserved in both structure and function in vertebrates and invertebrates. It plays important roles during the establishment of planar cell polarity (PCP) of epithelial tissues and during the development of axons and dendrites in both peripheral and central neurons. / This thesis looks at the role of Flamingo/Starry Night in axon growth and guidance in the embryonic abdominal peripheral nervous system (PNS) of Drosophila. It describes the expression pattern of Flamingo in the PNS and its environment. A combination of single cell labelling and immunohistochemical techniques was used to define the effect of mutations in flamingo as well as several genes coding for potential Flamingo interaction partners. Rescue- and over-/mis-expression experiments featuring targeted expression of either a wild type version or mutant versions of flamingo provide information on the cellular and molecular mechanisms by which Flamingo regulates sensory axon development. Loss of Flamingo function results in a highly penetrant axon stall phenotype. Both sensory and motor axons frequently halt their advance early along their normal trajectories. Flamingo appears to mediate an axon growth promoting signal upon contact of sensory growth cones with specific early intermediate targets. Expression of Flamingo in sensory neurons is sufficient to rescue the mutant sensory axon phenotype. This rescue is at least partially independent of most of the extracellular region of the Flamingo protein. While Flamingo was previously found to have homophilic adhesion properties in vitro and appears to function by a homophilic mechanism during the neurite development of several types of neurons, this study supports a heterophilic signalling mechanism by which Flamingo fulfils its role in abdominal sensory axon growth promotion.

Operationssjuksköterskors upplevelser av att arbeta nattskift : En intervjustudie / Operating theatre nurses' experiences of working night-shift : An interviw studyHäggblom, Sofia January 2013 (has links)

Influence of blue/green versus red and white light sources on human dark adaptation and other selected visual functionsHendrikse, Egbert Johannes January 1994 (has links)
Red interior lighting used to preserve dark-adaptation needs to be replaced in military applications by blue/green lighting which is not detectable by 3rd-generation image intensifiers. This study investigated the influence of blue/green as compared to red and white light of equal photopic intensity on subsequent visual acuity , contrast sensitivity and dark-adaptation. Male subjects (n = 90) were assigned to one of 15 treatment conditions (n = 6) as determined by the colour (blue/green, red or white) and intensity (0.1; 0.4; 1.6; 6.4 and 25.6 cd/m²) of the pre-adaptation stimuli. A modified Goldmann/Weekers adaptometer was used to present the preadaptation stimuli, test stimuli and record visual (luminance) thresholds of each subject. Blue/green lighting had the same affect on visual (photopic) acuity and contrast sensitivity as white and red lighting. Blue/green affected visual (absolute) threshold at the start and during the process of dark-adaptation in the same manner as white but not the same as red lighting. White and red lighting did not differ significantly (p < 0.01) at low intensities (mesopic range) but did at the higher intensities (photopic range). After exposure to blue/green and white light, it will take longer to reach the same level of dark-adaptation than after exposure to red. These time differences increase with" increased intensities. The brightness ratio between red and white lights to produce the same dark-adaptation increases with an increase in intensity. At the upper mesopic region the differences between the effects of white and red lighting on subsequent dark-adaptation become irregular due to the inability to accurately equate non-monochromatic lights in the mesopic range.

In this work, observed and intrinsic parameters(period, wavelength and phase
speed) of gravity waves were studied using OI 630.0 nm airglow measurements. Those
waves were observed at São João do Cariri (geographic coordinates: 7:4 S; 36:5 W, geomagnetic coordinates: 0:48 N, 35:8 L). A total of 51 gravity waves events were observed from September 2011 to April 2015 using an all sky airglow imager. Intrinsic parameters of 31 gravity waves were estimated using spectral analysis. The spectral characteristics of the waves are in agreement with observations made in other places around the world, i.e., the observed periods range between 12 and 30 minutes, the horizontal wavelengths from 90 to 180 km and the observed phase speed were from 30 to 180 m/s. Most of the observed waves showed the propagation direction to the east and northeast. Simultaneous measurements of the atmospheric wind made by two Fabry-Perot Interferometers, deployed at São João do Cariri and Cajazeiras ( geographic coordinates: 6:9 S; 38:5 W, geomagnetic coordinates: 01:49 N; 33:41 L), were also used to estimate the intrinsic parameters of the gravity waves. The termospheric wind blows predominantly to the southwest. The observed periods of the gravity waves showed changes, mainly between 18 and 30 min as compared to the intrinsic ones. All of the waves that had propagation direction to the north and northwest decreased their horizontal observed phase speed when they are compared to the intrinsic phase speed. Furthermore, most of the waves propagating to the northeast decreased their observed phase speed. On the other hand, most of the waves propagating to the southeast increased the observed phase speed. Thus, all of the waves propagating eastward had the observed phase speed increased.

Study of a Night Sky Radiator Cooling System Utilizing Direct Fluid Radiation Emission and Varying Cover MaterialsJanuary 2011 (has links)
abstract: As the demand for power increases in populated areas, so will the demand for water. Current power plant technology relies heavily on the Rankine cycle in coal, nuclear and solar thermal power systems which ultimately use condensers to cool the steam in the system. In dry climates, the amount of water to cool off the condenser can be extremely large. Current wet cooling technologies such as cooling towers lose water from evaporation. One alternative to prevent this would be to implement a radiative cooling system. More specifically, a system that utilizes the volumetric radiation emission from water to the night sky could be implemented. This thesis analyzes the validity of a radiative cooling system that uses direct radiant emission to cool water. A brief study on potential infrared transparent cover materials such as polyethylene (PE) and polyvinyl carbonate (PVC) was performed. Also, two different experiments to determine the cooling power from radiation were developed and run. The results showed a minimum cooling power of 33.7 W/m2 for a vacuum insulated glass system and 37.57 W/m2 for a tray system with a maximum of 98.61 Wm-2 at a point when conduction and convection heat fluxes were considered to be zero. The results also showed that PE proved to be the best cover material. The minimum numerical results compared well with other studies performed in the field using similar techniques and materials. The results show that a radiative cooling system for a power plant could be feasible given that the cover material selection is narrowed down, an ample amount of land is available and an economic analysis is performed proving it to be cost competitive with conventional systems. / Dissertation/Thesis / Excel Data with generated plots and some calcs / Raw Data / FTIR csv files for materials / FTIR generated images / IR camera images / Experimental setup images / M.S.
The present work aimed at reconstituting the individual and collective trajectories of the night musicians of Porto Alegre: Ari Fernando, Cigano Durque Costa, Luiza Hellena, Jô de Sousa, Gilberto [Pedro] Lara, Sabiá Juvêncio Rodrigues, Paulo Jorge Linier, Eneida Martins, Fabrício Rodrigues, Norminha Duval, Ziláh Machado, Zé Carlos Silveira, Zé da Terreira and others; On the other hand, through the fieldwork conducted between 2016 and 2017, ethnographing the daily life of the research collaborators, individuals who have in common the age of over 60, who attend the Sindicato dos Músicos do Rio Grande do Sul, the Casa do Artista Rio-Grandense, pubs, etc. Through an ethnomusicology of memory, I sought to understand the reasons why some musicians are remembered and others are socially forgotten. Throughout the research, I observed that his professional activities, begun between the 1950s and 1970s, in circuses, cabarets and nightclubs, have labor relations in common under subaltern conditions. I also noticed that the social forgetfulness that weighs on their musical careers is linked to the social damages caused by unfavorable socioeconomic conditions, by racism, by male oppression of women and by old age.
