Historieskrivning i den samtida historiska romanen : En läsning av Sarah Waters The night watch och Colson Whiteheads The underground railroad

Ehn Svensson, Mikaela January 2020 (has links)
It has always been important to study history. But what we can’t forget is that there’s more than one way of doing so. One of those is literature. In this thesis I will therefore study two contemporary historical novels: The Night Watch by Sarah Waters and The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead. The aim is to explore how they portray different kinds of historical experiences and how that may relate to questions that are relevant even in a contemporary context. Because both novels have an interestning relationship with time and space, I’m going to use the russian literary theorist Micheal Bachtins concept of the chronotope to explore how time and space operates and relate to eachother. In the end, this thesis also aims to show that literature can be a valuable object to study for those that are intererested in histiography.

The journey to God through the spirituality of Teresa of Ávila (1515-1582)

Vietri, Christopher Daniel 30 November 2007 (has links)
This study sets out to determine whether Teresa of Ávila's spirituality, especially her treatise, The Interior Castle, can still provide an appropriate guide for the journey to God in the world of the 21st century. This remarkable book offers a particularly unique contribution to Christian literature. To accomplish this goal, a study of the nature of Christian Spirituality is undertaken, followed by a brief history of Christian spirituality. This provides a backdrop for an examination of the historical setting against which the Interior Castle was written. The study then explores the seven mansions of the Interior Castle to gain an understanding of the journey to God and examines some of the most important and recurring themes in the book. The stages and forms of prayer which are central to the Interior Castle are discussed and the mystical experiences of the 'dark night of the spirit' and union with God are analysed. Lastly, the findings are evaluated to ascertain whether Teresa's writings are still relevant in this contemporary era for those embarking upon the journey towards God. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M. The relevance of John of the Cross (1542-1591) for Canadian prairie evangelical spirituality

Peasgood, Joyce Marie 30 November 2007 (has links)
Evangelicalism in western Canada was fuelled by fundamentalist theology and devotion which evolved in this region during the early twentieth century. Generally, Canadian evangelical theologians have focused on the historical and theological implications of evangelicalism within this area. Due to the nature of evangelical theology, which is governed by reason and the defense of truth and dogma, this Christian movement in the west ignored by default concepts connected to mystical theology. This thesis researches a question which has not had an adequate response within evangelical theological tradition, primarily as a result of its disregard for mystical theology. The issue of concern in this thesis is the nature of the process of sanctification of the soul, and particularly, the purpose of the silence of God during this time. Questions to be addressed are: `what is the nature of spiritual transformation?', `what transpires in the soul of the person?' and `what is the role of the `dark night' and the `silence of God' during this experience?' This research responds with an explanation to the underlying cause for the inability of evangelical spirituality in the Canadian west to respond to this issue. It also provides a plausible resolution to the problem which is embedded in the literature of John of the Cross, a sixteenth century Spanish mystic. / CHR SPIRIT, CHURCHIST, MISS / DTH (CHR SPIRIT)

The Expression of Koinouta in “Kokinwakashuh” – an Approach to Contrastive Expression of Time –

Lin, Yi Jiun Unknown Date (has links)
“Kokinwakashuh” is the first waka collections that Japanese Emperor chose, and it was compiled around the year 905. The editors are Ki no Tsurayuki, Ki no Tomonori, Oshikochi Mitsune, and Mibu no Tadamine. The chapters are Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, Congratulations, Partings, Travel, Acrostics, Love, Laments, Miscellaneous, Miscellaneous Forms, and Traditional Poems from the Bureau of Song. The style is courtly elegance of classical, disciplined beauty. In these 1100 poems, the four season Poems and ‘koinouta’ (Love Poems) are two pillars. The Seasons Poems are arranged according to the transition of seasons. The ‘koinouta’ (Love Poems) are arranged according to the process of love, and there is the transition of time in the arrangement. It is admitted that time is a critical factor in Poems of “Kokinshuh”. Therefore, the ‘koinouta’ (Love Poems) of “Kokinwakashuh” is the subject in this thesis. The ‘koinouta’ (Love Poems) are analyzed through the contrastive expression of time, like ‘morning and night’, ‘dream and reality’ and ‘past and present’. In this thesis, poems were classified first, and the homogeneous poems were put together. The contrast expression in the poems of each kind was analyzed, and the meaning of the contrast expression in each poem was investigated. This thesis consists of six chapters. The purpose of research was discussed in Chapter 1. In Chapter 2, the theory is progressed from the essence of the waka and the ‘koinouta’ (Love Poems). In the same chapter, essence and the composition of the ‘koinouta’ (Love Poems) were examined, and the time characteristic in ‘koinouta’ (Love Poems) of “Kokinwakashuh” was analyzed. In Chapter 3, it centered on the contrast expression of ‘morning and night’. It is separated for two subjects, ‘specific morning and night’ and ’unspecific morning and night’. In Chapter 4, it centered on the contrast expression of ‘dream and reality’. It is separated for five subjects. In Chapter 5, it centered on the contrast expression of ‘past and present’. It is separated for two subjects. In Chapter 6, the role and the meaning of a time contrast expression in “Kokinwakashuh” were clarified through the comparison with “Manyoshuh”.

Romaniuc-Boularand, Bianca 19 November 2010 (has links)
The notion of rhythm provides the studys anchoring principle. Here the rhythm ofCélines prose is apprehended in its lexical dimension, with particular attention to a 5guiding theme, namely that of jazz music. In the first part, the jazz theme isfore-grounded through an examination of Célines orthographic variations andspecifically to his idiosyncratic use of small and capital letters. It also brings to bearthe varied effect of the use of the pronoun on. The second part of the thesis isdevoted to the topic of improvisation. It presents an analysis of ways in which formal, functional and semantic neologisms are rendered in Rumanian translations. Finally, the third part seks to identify several governing principles of a poetic dimension inCélines novel, which often pose a challenge to translators, such as lexicalrecurrence, semantic profusion, literal usage and the arbitrary relation of signifiers. This thesis proposes an analytical contribution to scholarschip on Céline through aclose, « practico-theoretical reading of the text

Obraz televizního novináře v amerických televizních seriálech (od Mary Tyler Moore Show po Newsroom) / The image of television journalist in american television series (from Mary Tyler Moore Show to Newsroom)

Pavelková, Eva January 2015 (has links)
The objective of this master thesis The image of television journalist in American television series is to unveil personality traits of main characters in five selected American series during five decades (from the beginning of the 1970s to present) by means of combination of interpretative reading and semiotic (visual) analysis, and by that interpret representation of journalists. Subsequently the typologies of journalistic characters by Brian McNair and Joe Saltzman are used to categorize 27 central figures to types or stereorypes. Majority of characters combined more different types but it could be stated that all images of journalists were positive - possibly due to bigger popularity among viewers. Simultaneously it is neccesary to point out that characters across analysed series classified to same categories are not fully identical - characters show enough resemblance for type identification but similarities are outweighed by differences.

Ciclos de atividade/repouso e alimentação/jejum associados ao uso de equipamentos eletrônicos: aspectos comportamentais e padrões temporais / Not informed by the author

Seito, Tatiana Harumi 27 January 2017 (has links)
After popularization of electric energy, electronic technologies have been created and incorporated to our routines. Access to electric light can promote more flexibility on temporal organization of our activities which allow for an extension of the wake phase to later portions of the night. Thus, that situation could promote temporal challenges to the organisms, generated by oscillations of temporal signals, which may cause phase advances or delays in rhythmic events like feeding/fasting, rest/activity and metabolic functions. This study involved 27 university students between 18 to 30 years old (17 women; 10 men) where feeding and sleep behavior data were collected with feeding and sleep diaries; the rest/activity rhythm and the light/dark cycle data were collected with actimeters. The association observed in relation to the use of the electronic equipments with the food intake is supported by the delay of the beginning of rest that propitiates the increase of the average intake in the nocturnal phase. In the long term, the delay of the rest phase and the decrease of its duration can generate a misalignment in the regulation of the expression of the temporal patterns of rest/activity and feeding/fasting and thus change the temporal pattern of the feeding behavior

Quereller l'azur. Lines and figures of divorce in the French narrative (1870-1905)

Glaumaud-Carbonnier, Marion 11 January 2017 (has links)
Divorce as an object of literary study, the proposal may surprise. The distinctiveness of fields and areas of research requires that a choice be made to study the question from a historical, political, legal, social or moral point of view. Literature, however, is never even considered. In 1884, the rehabilitation of divorce in French legislation was the result of an unusual combination of politics and literature. From the editorials and columns of the newspapers, in essays and in books, the narration of matrimonial misfortunes of men and women caught strangled by the law, wrestling against a civil inevitability that constrains their private and conjugal life, clamors for un-marriage. While the ties between literature and the claims for legal disunion are secular, linked in the works of George Sand, the battle of pens fighting against the indissolubility of marriage will significantly change the thinking of engaged literature and encourage a reasoning on the role of the writer, his relation to the law, and to demonstrate the power of literature on morals and the drafting of legislation. As a valuable analytical tool to understand the intellectual, literary and narrative aspects of the beginnings of the Third Republic, the un-marriage topic can be used to study the representation of conjugality in the French narrative of the end of the 19th century. Henceforth legal, divorce in fact transforms the imagination of literature on private morals and inaugurates new narrative situations: the encounter with the former husband, the jealousy of the new husband, the second wedding night, and the sexual past of the woman, all soon become common practice in the literary genre. The promulgation of divorce nevertheless rudely tests French narrative customs: by offering a solution to stories of adultery, divorce breaks a secular narrative model, and obliges literature to rethink its fatalities and its forms.

(Re)making men, representing the Caribbean Nation: authorialIndividuation in works by Fred D’Aguiar, Robert Antoni, andMarlon James

Unknown Date (has links)
This dissertation proposes that West Indian contemporary male writers develop literary authority, or a voice that represents the nation, via a process of individuation. This process enables the contemporary male writer to unite the disparities of the matriarchal and patriarchal authorial traditions that inform his development of a distinctive creative identity. I outline three stages of authorial individuation that are inspired by Jung’s theory of individuation. The first is the contemporary male writer’s return to his nationalist forebears’ tradition to dissolve his persona, or identification with patriarchal authority; Fred D’Aguiar’s “The Last Essay About Slavery” and Feeding the Ghosts illustrate this stage. The second is his reconciliation of matriarchal (present) and patriarchal (past) traditions of literary authority via his encounter with his forebears’ feminized, raced shadow; Robert Antoni’s Blessed Is the Fruit evidences this process. The third is the contemporary male writer’s renunciation of authority defined by masculinity, which emerges as his incorporation of the anima, or unconscious feminine; Marlon James’s The Book of Night Women exemplifies this final phase of his individuation. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2013.

Trabalhadores de enfermagem: compreendendo condições de vida e trabalho e ritmos biológicos / Nursing personnel shiftworkers: understanding working and living conditions and biological rhythms

Borges, Flavio Notarnicola da Silva 13 February 2007 (has links)
Objectives. The aim of this study was to evaluate work ability and biological rhythms of health care shiftworkers. Methods. To evaluate the work ability it was designed an epidemiological approach using a comprehensive questionnaire which included working and living conditions and health symptoms. 696 health care shiftworkers participated in this study. A sub sample of 19 female registered nurses and nurse aides/technicians were invited and agreed to participate in the chronobiological evaluation. Workers answered daily logs and wore actigraphs (Ambulatory Monitoring) to monitor activity and evaluate rest and waking periods along data collection. Urine samples were collected and voided volumes were measured during two periods of four consecutive days (working days and days off) of night workers, submitted to 12 hour night shifts followed by 36 hour off, and during one period of 8 consecutive days (six working days and two days off). It was also evaluated the 6-sulphatoxymelatonin and cortisol concentration, and their circadian rhythmicity using the Cosinor method. These 19 nurses were evaluated as more or less tolerant to shiftwork. The tolerance to shiftwork was evaluated by 9 health scores(dull and sleepy score, decline of working motivation, projection of fatigue to some parts of the body, general fatigue score, Self-Report Questionnaire (SRQ-20 score), insomnia score, sleepiness score, sleep disturbances score) and availability of free time. Results. Mean age of the respondents was 34.9 years, most of them female (87.8%) and 40.6% entered labor force before 18 years old. The socio-demographic factors associated to inadequate work ability were: income responsibility - sole breadwinner (OR=1.922), raising kids (OR=1.558), age group (under 40 years old) (OR=1,400). Factors associated with working conditions were: thermal discomfort (OR=1.548), and verbal abuse (OR=1.670). Obesity (OR=2.14), sleep problems (OR=1.681) and fatigue (OR>3.771) were health outcomes associated to inadequate work ability. Night workers showed longer mean sleep duration and referred better sleep quality to nocturnal sleep. These workers also reported higher alertness level when they nap during the night shift. Mean concentration of 6-sulphatoxymelatonin and cortisol among night workers were significantly lower than the day workers concentrations (p<0,001). When workers were classified into more and less tolerant to shiftwork, the less tolerant night workers referred worst sleep quality and lower alertness levels. The mean concentration of 6-sulphatoxymelatonin and cortisol, during working days and days off, showed distinct behavior in the two groups. It was found a great variability of the rhythmic parameters during working days and days off. Conclusions. Inadequate work ability was associated with a number of variables present at work and living conditions. Strategy of taking naps during night work was effective to maintain the alertness levels during work. Night workers 6-sulphatoxymelatonin mean concentrations were lower than day workers concentration. This might be related to light exposure during the night shift. The higher reported fatigue by these workers might explain the lower cortisol mean concentration presented by night workers when compared to day workers. The rhythms of 6-sulphatoxymelatonin and cortisol showed different behaviors when compared more and less tolerant workers, but any standard behavior could be observed since there is a great individual variability.
