Large-Scale Empirical Studies of Mobile AppsMojica Ruiz, Israel Jesus 06 August 2013 (has links)
Mobile apps (or apps) are software applications developed to run on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, among other devices. The number of apps has grown tremendously since Apple opened the first app store in 2008. For example, in March of 2009 the Google Play app store (formerly known as Android Market) had only 2,300 apps, and by mid of 2013 there were more than 800,000 apps. Given the accelerated rate of growth in the number of apps, new software engineering challenges have emerged in order to help ease the software development practices of app developers. In this thesis we examine three examples of these challenges, namely code reuse in mobile apps, app ratings, and the use of ad libraries within apps. We carry out our case studies on thousands of Android apps from the Google Play market.
We find that code reuse in mobile apps is considerably higher than in desktop/server apps. However, identical copies of mobile apps are rare. We find that the current ratings system is not able to capture the dynamics of the evolving nature of apps. Thus, we were able to show the need for a more elaborate rating system for the apps. Finally, we observe that a considerable number of free-to-download apps are dependant on ads for their revenue. Our findings suggest that "ad maintenance" is a tough challenge that developers of mobile apps have to face. / Thesis (Master, Computing) -- Queen's University, 2013-08-04 22:03:54.577

The effects of actor attractiveness and advertisement choice on mechanical avoidance behaviorsNettelhorst, Stephen Charles January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Psychological Sciences / Laura A. Brannon / Two common types of advertisement avoidance behaviors in digital domains are skipping and zipping. Skipping involves pressing a “skip ad” button when viewing television content online, and zipping involves pressing a fast-forward button when viewing the same content through some type of recording device (e.g. Digital Video Recording device). The purpose of these studies was to examine if specific factors regarding the content of the advertisement, the persuasion context, and characteristics of the viewer reduce occurrences of skipping and zipping behavior. Participants in these two studies saw a combination of television shows and advertisements. One target advertisement marketed a fictional MP3 player while another discussed the dangers of binge drinking. One version each of the MP3 and binge drinking advertisements contained average-looking (i.e. normal) actors, and the other half contained above-average-looking (i.e. attractive) actors. Half of the viewers were allowed to choose which type of advertisements they would watch while the other half were forced to watch a particular type. The results of one study showed that participants were more likely to skip the MP3 advertisement than the binge drinking advertisement after making an advertisement choice when both contained normally attractive actors. These findings demonstrate that the effect of advertisement choice may be more complicated than previously found. Instead of acting as a means to improve avoidance rates, advertisement choice may make the content more salient to participants. Thus, viewers’ perceptions of the advertisement after making an advertisement choice may determine whether avoidance occurs.

Vem ser vad? : Annonsbilden ur ett genusperspektiv / Who sees what? : The advertising picture with a gender perspectiveGisby, Amanda January 2013 (has links)
Purpose: The purpose with this thesis is to examen if there are any differences between how men and women are influenced by the advertisement picture. Do men and women in generation Y see the same things in the advertisement picture, or do differences exist that influence their perception of the advertisement picture. Methodology: The research is implemented with a qualitative method. The empirical foundation is grounded in four semi-structured interviews and two gender divided group interviews. Conclusion: The conclusions are that the advertising pictures, regardless of their gender affected the respondents. The men participating in the study expressed, more often then the women, their feelings about the advertisement picture, which led to an imagination. The women on the other hand gave expression for their imagination around and about the advertisement picture that awoke their feelings about the picture.

The Sticking Out Parts: A Content Analysis of Print and Website Advertisements on Breast and Penis AugmentationRobinson, Thomas Christopher 22 April 2008 (has links)
Breast and penis augmentations are century old processes of body modification continuing in development and practice today. This Masters thesis is a content analysis of breast and penis augmentation print and internet advertisements to explore one facet of augmentation discourse presented in public space. Relevant theoretical literature includes fetish discourse and medical discourse as existing frameworks that conceptualize augmentation predominantly as a process of body fragmentation. After reviewing this literature, I expand to blend together perspectives from three body theorists, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Michel Foucault and Judith Butler, as an alternate framework for embodiment. I then use content analysis to examine the data collected from 21 print sources and 27 internet sources. The data indicates fetish discourse, focusing on body fragmentation, is the dominant content in breast and penis augmentation advertisements; however, I argue in the conclusion that incorporating elements of embodiment into fetish discourse is a better perspective for future research.

the factors of entry strategies influence international AD companies- the study of Taiwan marketTsao, Yung-chieh 30 July 2008 (has links)
Researchers have been addressing on entry strategies, most of them are foreign researchers conducted researches on multinational firms, especially firms entering developed European countries or USA. Domestic researches mainly focused on firms entering PRC market, literally few studies have been found served Taiwan as the market being entered. Since Taiwan released the limit on foreigner share holding proportions in 1984, international advertisement firms gradually entered Taiwan. In the score years, Taiwan¡¦s advertisement market have been totally owned by foreign firms, thus Taiwanese advertisement firms need a method to break through. Given southeastern Asia markets are emerging, for Taiwanese advertisement firms, they pose as a market to be invested. Thus this thesis analyzed the entry mode of international advertising firms in order to serve as a reference to Taiwanese advertisement firms.
This research served the period between establishment and entering Taiwan, cultural differences, five years average growth rate of GDP per capita, five years average growth rate of FDI in origin country, year 1984 and the changes in the number of competitors as the independent variables, and ownership or not as the dependent variable, applied logistic regression models in testing the relation between the selected variables. Outcomes indicate that cultural differences factor and five years average growth rate of GDP per capita factor bear significant factor loading while the other yielded insignificant results.
Emerging countries in Asia ¡V e.g. Vietnam and Thailand ¡V possess close culture characteristics with Taiwan. Thus if advertisement firms are willing to invest in these markets, it is suggested to enter with ownership ¡V especially when the underlying countries¡¦ GDP growth rates are high.

The Influence of Content and Context Motivation on Advertisement Effectiveness OnlineKu, Sung Mo 01 January 2015 (has links)
This research proposal provides literature review regarding context motivation and its influence on advertisement effectiveness. I propose two quasi-experiments using motivation as an independent variable while measuring memory for the advertisement in order to predict advertisement effectiveness. The first experiment solely investigates the role of program motivation on advertisement memory. The secondary experiment proposed an investigation looking into the interaction between program motivation and advertisement motivation. Based on previous literature on advertisements, persuasion, and motivation, I hypothesized that high program motivation may impair memory for the advertisements. For Experiment 2, I hypothesized that both independent variables regarding content and context motivation will interact to show different results than Experiment 1, in which only the context motivation is measured. This paper aims to provide an effective marketing strategy in a relatively new yet potent advertising market in OTV (online television).

Stay out of gangs: a visual analysis of the public service campaignTrubyk, Brittny 13 December 2010 (has links)
This visual analysis of the Stay out of Gangs public service announcement (PSA) is a site for social investigations. The investigation follows the question of what kind of work the campaign does, in terms of the social discourses it works within and its broader social impact. More specifically, this paper explores the design of the campaign, focusing on the way it frames and interpellates intended audiences, paying attention to the discourses that are produced. The discourses observed in the campaign both reflect and reference popular representations of the gangster and the stereotypes of ethnic minority groups in our society. This paper concludes that the interpellation of both the marginalized at-risk and the law abiding subject positions is working within the PSA, thereby reinforcing social discourses of social inclusion and exclusion currently working in society.

Neverbální složky reklamního diskurzu z hlediska diachronního / Nonverbal elements of advertising discourse in a diachronic viewKLEINOVÁ, Petra January 2013 (has links)
The aim of diploma thesis is to cover the evolution and transformation of advertisement in connection with political, economical and social changes in the society in years 1918-1989. The work is primarily focused on nonverbal parts of the advertisement (image, color, graphics). For understanding of the advertisement as a whole it is necessary to take into account a verbal part too. Diploma thesis tries further to confirm or disprove a theory that advertisement can be one of the sources for cognition of values and standards of society. The work is divided into two big parts ? a theoretical and a practical part. The theoretical part contains general information about the advertisement that gives a summary about nature and functioning of the advertisement in particular historical periods. The theoretical part brings knowledge about an advertising discourse and its components (verbal and nonverbal) too. The important part of the work is classification of the advertisement into four stages of Czechoslovak society evolution in years 1918-1989. The second part of the work is focused on an analysis of acquired material that became the base for creation of whole this work. The database consists of six thousand advertisements acquired from printed journals. The material was collected in a period of more than one year. The basic sources were daily newspapers and between them especially their continuity in publishing was preferred. Due to the fact that the work tries to cover the period of seventy years long, the period of 1918-1989 is divided into four historical phases. Milestones of division into phases are important historical events that in consequence meant transformation of Czechoslovak society. Based on these social changes, changes of the advertisement and its nonverbal parts are monitored.
