Validation of the Non-Ah Speech Disturbance Ratio as a Measure of Transitory Anxiety

Hartwig, Fenton W. 12 1900 (has links)
An investigation of concurrent validity of the Non-ah Speech Disturbance Ratio (Non-ah SDR) with the State Form of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Twenty male college students talked on an anxiety-arousing topic before female audiences who rated observed anxiety. Each subject completed the State and Trait Forms of the STAI. Reliabilities were, by the Intraclass correlation for Raters on Day 1, .63 (p<.01) and Day 2, .20 (p<.05). Pearson's r for scorers was .98 (p<.01). The Non-ah SDR and all other measures of anxiety correlated. A partial correlation test found the naive ratings significantly determined by manifest speech disturbance, as measured by the Non-ah SDR. Certain categories of speech disturbance were only infrequently utilized and added little to the measure as a whole.

Capitalism in moral perspective – an Islamic alternative

Mohamed, Farouq January 2011 (has links)

This thesis investigates the economic and moral viability of the capitalist economic system, in order to compare it with the Islamic economic system in terms of justice and fairness. Earlier Marxist/Socialist critique of Capitalism focused on issues within Capitalism such as greed, corruption, cheating, bribery, pirating, abuse, and other market problems e.g. practices and regulations which lead to poverty, hunger, economic crises, collapse, inflation, stagnation and steep price increases. Instead of sloganeering from a distance, contemporary research on the problems of the world economy is replete with frank criticism &ldquo / from the inside&rdquo / , i.e. by capitalist economists themselves. In this study, written from a Muslim perspective, the problem within the capitalist system will be assessed in conversation with critique from &ldquo / outside&rdquo / and &ldquo / inside&rdquo / capitalist discourse.

Analysis of Ahr Expression and Stability in a Recombinant Yeast Model System

Cuccinello, Sarah Elizabeth 01 January 2011 (has links)
The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (Ahr) and the aryl hydrocarbon receptor nuclear translocator (Arnt) are well characterized bHLH-PAS transcription factors shown to regulate expression of xenobiotic metabolism genes. Extensive study has shown that upon treatment with certain aromatic hydrocarbons, mammalian cells rapidly activate the Ahr signaling pathway in order to stimulate gene expression and attempt to metabolize the xenobiotic compounds. It has been shown that after DNA-binding, the Ahr but not the Arnt protein, is quickly eliminated from the nuclear compartment thereby attenuating the dose of gene regulation administered by the Ahr*Arnt transcription factor complex. Previous studies have implicated involvement of the 26S proteasome complex in the degradation process, but the exact identity of the intermediary proteins and/or ligases remains to be defined. Identification and characterization of the protein(s) involved in degrading the receptor is essential for understanding the signaling pathway in its entirety including the mechanism for regulating the genetic response to Ahr ligands. The model organism, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, was used in order to characterize the Ahr signaling pathway and degradation mechanism in a more simplified cellular setting in which the major processes required for growth and development are conserved. First, the AHR and ARNT cDNAs were stably inserted into the yeast genome such that protein expression was inducible. A time course of induction demonstrated detectable levels of Ahr and Arnt proteins via western blotting while protein function was confirmed by detection of ligand-dependent reporter activity in an expressor strain carrying the pLXRE5-Z beta-galactosidase reporter plasmid. Additionally, a rapid reduction in protein levels was observed upon turning off the inducible GAL1 promoter located upstream of both AHR and ARNT cDNAs. Studies in mammalian cell culture have demonstrated that disrupting receptor chaperoning results in rapid Ahr protein turnover, as demonstrated by treatment with Hsp90 inhibitors. In order to determine if reduced Ahr protein expression in the yeast system was attributed to improper chaperoning of the exogenous protein; human heat shock proteins were constitutively expressed from yeast expression vectors in the Ahr and Arnt expressing strains, but did not confer any effect on Ahr stability when protein levels were evaluated by western blotting. Additionally, a strain of yeast was constructed such that the gene encoding the cell-wall protein, ERG6, was deleted from the yeast genome to allow for permeation of proteasome inhibitors. Treatment of this strain with proteasome inhibitors blocked the receptor degradation, therefore implicating the 26S proteasome in Ahr degradation when expressed exogenously in yeast.

Life and personality of S̲hāh Ismāʻīl I (1487-1524)

Youssef-Jamālī, Moḥammad Karim January 1981 (has links)
Previous scholarly studies of the founder of the Ṣafawid dynasty in Iran, S̲hāh Ismāʻīl I, have concentrated, to a large extent, on the political events of this turbulent period and have described in detail the military career of this still little-known ruler. These earlier works have used only a limited range of historical material, drawing information mostly from straightforward historical chronicles, the majority of which are heavily biased in favour of the Ṣafawids. The intention of this present work has been to analyse in detail the personality of S̲hāh Ismāʻīl I and to fit this highly enigmatic personality into his social and cultural background. Particular emphasis has been placed on the religious attitudes and policies of S̲hāh Ismāʻīl and a detailed account has been given of his imposition of Twelver S̲hiʻism on Iran. Chapters I and II discuss his early life, while chapters III and IV treat different facets of his personality and the intellectual life at court. Chapter V is devoted to the relationship of S̲hāh Ismāʻīl with the various members of his close family. Chapters VI and VII are concerned with religious matters. The final chapter discusses the leisure activities of S̲hāh Ismāʻīl. Throughout the thesis, extensive use has been made of primary sources, some of which have not been used before; as for those sources already discussed by other scholars, they have been studied again in this thesis to lay stress on certain aspects of S̲hāh Ismāʻīl's reign previously overlooked.

Samre, Marie-Christine January 2017 (has links)
For many of us living in the West, wildlife films may be the primary source to watch and learn about the lives of animals like lions, monkeys, and other” far of reach” animals. But how much of what we see in wildlife films is really true? Does wildlife film fall under documentary or does it fall under the category fiction? And how is the answer to this question relevant for gender studies as a scientific field? The purpose of this essay is to investigate the way in which gender is being represented in wildlife films from a constructivist perspective. The essay is based on two wildlife films from different production companies: BBC and National Geographic. With the support of previous research by Hillevi Ganetz and Malin Ah-King, I conclude that the way animals are being represented in wildlife films shows connections to the Victorian age regarding ideas of gender, and even Darwinism when it comes to sexual reproduction. The result of the study indicates that the way in which animals are being represented in wildlife films is very relevant for how we understand gender and sexuality in modern society.
