Suid-Afrikaanse motorpublikasies in die nuwe millenniumHeese, Hans Friedrich 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--University of South Africa, 2001. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study deals with the history and development of motoring publications in South Africa since
the start of the twentieth century.
An important aspect of the study is the examination of the profitability of specialist motoring
publications that are in direct competition with motoring sections in newspapers, radio and
television. The ability of the motoring media to draw advertisements - especially from the car
manufacturers - is also scrutinised.
In this study the problems encountered by journalists seeking information or feed-back from certain
car manufacterers, are highlighted.
The study also covers new technical developments such as the Internet and the numerous new
motoring websites and closes with case studies of two new ventures; one which was successful,
another which failed.

This thesis discusses the performance of the national automobile industry and, among several variables, focuses on the sales and on the production of national passenger carrying vehicles for the domestic market, approaching employment figures and investments volume, as well as highlighting its importance to the national economy. The sector fosters the technological development and through the absorption of a high contingency of jobs, it presents an expressive generation of income and taxes, as well as a strong connection with other sectors in the economy. The period analyzed herein starts in 1994 with the implementation of the Real Plan, which enabled economy stability, with low inflation reaching 1.7% per year in 1998, as measured by IGP-DI. This achievement is consolidated during the two terms of President Fernando Henrique Cardoso, significantly changing the action of the economic agents with additional financial planning; the industries start to invest more to meet the needs of the repressed consumption due to the lack of a scenario and the financial institutions make credit lines available with broader terms. During President Lula’s terms (2003-2010), in addition to inheriting the economic stability, there is the benefit of the Chinese economy, which then demanded agricultural and mineral commodities, boosting Brazilian exports. At the same time, financial institutions grant expressive credit volumes for vehicles financing. In addition, it is necessary to consider the advent of a real salary increment, which creates positive conditions influencing car sales. Finally, President Dilma Rousseff’s government tries to continue the economic performance of the previous government. At that moment, the National Financial System (SFN) increased credit volumes and the government maintained the tax burden reduction for the sector. In 2014, however, the effects of this cycle ended, with the inversion of market expectations and thus the sales volume of national passenger carrying vehicles in the Brazilian market decreases. In addition to the study of those government periods in what concerns the sector, a historical overview from Juscelino Kubitschek’s Government until 1993 is provided in order to introduce the discussion about the main period and to provide a perspective on the historical development of the national automobile industry of passenger carrying vehicles.

From the 1990s, the Brazilian auto industry is experiencing an intense restructuring process induced by fierce competition in the world market for cars, expansion of the production to the emerging economies and institutional changes in the country’s economy due to trade liberalization, economic stabilization and change of the exchange rate regime. Starting from the assumption that business strategies must fit to the selection environment, the goal of the dissertation is to study how the automakers in Brazil had adapted their competitive strategies and what was the resulting economic performance. To achieve that goal this work has studied the world and national auto industry, as well as the institutional changes occurring in Brazil in the period 1986- 2007. The theoretical framework used to support the analysis is based on the Evolutionary Theory, on the Eclectic Paradigm and on the different visions on Institutional Economics. The data used in the analysis were obtained through the statistics published by various sources and in studies conducted by different authors. By the analysis performed it was possible to conclude that the adaptation of strategies to the competition pattern is crucial to the economic performance. In Brazil, that adaptation passes through the supply in various segments of the market at competitive prices with emphasis on the 'popular car', adoption of flex fuel engines, adoption of key technological innovations introduced, organization of production in industrial condominiums and high sales effort. The automakers who have been able to understand and to adapt to these requirements of the Brazilian competition environment, have managed to obtain a competitive performance higher than others competitors.
