Underachievement in schools : an ecosystemic approachBoulle, Robert Joseph 11 1900 (has links)
Over the years, extensive research has been conducted
in the field of underachievement. Many solutions to the
problem have been put forward, none of these proposals
universally addressing the problem.
The present research's aim was to address the problem
of underachievement ecosystemically. For this pu~ose,
through the process of a series of interviews, information
was gathered about the underachieving behaviour of a
particula~pc"a'nd his interaction with his teachers and his
parents in connection with his behaviour. It was found that
the underachieving behaviour could be described as part of a
larger interactive pattern, characterised by compliant/noncompliant
behaviour on the part of the pupil, and
involved/non-involved behaviour on the part of the teachers
and parents. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

An investigation into the relationship between creativity and academic performance in school childrenNoble, Sybil January 1970 (has links)
The subject of creativity is of interest not only to the research worker and educationist but also, with its related mental health aspect, to the clinical psychologist. As the writer's interest is in clinical psychology the opportunity, which occurred in 1968, to undertake research on creativity, was welcomed. This opportunity arose out of a larger piece of research into the relationships between personality variables and mathematical ability in school children. This involved the administration of personality tests and tests of arithmetic and mathematical ability to all the English speaking school children in Grahamstown from Standard 2 to Standard 10. The writer assisted in this testing program and did the greater part of the marking, scoring and entering on computer sheets. Thus personality test scores for over 2,000 children from the age of 8 or 9 to 17 or 18, both boys and girls were available. It was found possible to extend the computer program to calculate a score for creativity based on a combination of Cattell's personality factors and it was decided to compare these creativity scores with actual school performance, as measured by internal school examinations, which with the cooperation and agreement of the Cape Education Department and local schools, the writer was able to obtain. The relation between independent learning and lecturing skills with reference to student achievement in economicsFransman, Hilton John January 1993 (has links)
Thesis (D.Ed.)--University of South Africa, 1993. / The study attempted to find the relation between independent learning
and lecturing skills and their relative contribution to student
achievement in Economics at technikons.
South African tertiary educational institutions have been facing
increasing student numbers which place enormous strain on available
resources. To accommodate all students in the classroom is highly
unlikely, therefore a logical and reasonable mode of learning would be
a "self-regulating" or "autonomous" type. The literature survey concentrated on the nature and value of
independent learning, while lecturing skills have been discussed on the
basis of styles and effectiveness of lecturing and students' expectations
thereof. The nature of Economics has been reflected upon on the basis of four
key concepts, together with their implications for learning. A
competency-based model of Economics has been suggested, with
special emphasis on economic literacy.
A questionnaire, based on the literature survey, covering the areas of
independent learning, lecturing skills and the nature of Economics has
been compiled and completed by 645 technikon students.
A factor analysis has identified three factors, namely an independent
learning ability, lecturing skills and the nature of Economics. High
reliability coefficients were obtained for each of the three factors.

A comparison of the academic achievements of seventh grade students in the semester unit plan with those in the quarter unit planHarrison, Guy T. 05 1900 (has links)
The problem with which this dissertation is concerned is to determine whether the semester unit plan offers seventh grade students greater academic gain in the basic subject areas than does the quarter unit plan. Texas offers school districts a choice of the two plans. This study is unique in that the district of this study has both plans in operation at the secondary level.
