Researching an implementation of network analysis for elite rugby team coaching: A CBAR case study

This study sought to understand how the application of a network analysis of rugby gameplay could inform coaches of their teams’ patterns of play in an effort to aid their teams’ performance. A qualitative case study utilizing open-ended interviews and a process of evaluation and constant comparison served as a guiding framework for this the data collection and data analysis methods incorporated during this study. Results of the study identified four key findings. First, incorporating elements of community based action research into the design of a case study provided the researcher with an opportunity to build effective working relationships with both participants. Second, providing coaches with effective feedback that informed them of their player’s performance was critical to the performance analysis (PA) process. Third, modifying the network analysis process to meet the participant’s needs was key in providing applicable analysis during the cases study. Fourth, performance analysts and coaches, like those in this case study, require video feedback, linked to the network analysis, if the network analysis process is to be considered informative. Finally, creating a PA process that is able to adapt to the coaches changing needs as well as the work cycles the organization proceeds through is a benefit of the NA process that we developed. / Graduate

Towards Real-Time Volatile Memory Forensics: Frameworks, Methods, and Analysis

Memory forensics (or memory analysis) is a relatively new approach to digital forensics that deals exclusively with the acquisition and analysis of volatile system memory. Because each function performed by an operating system must utilize system memory, analysis of this memory can often lead to a treasure trove of useful information for forensic analysts and incident responders. Today’s forensic investigators are often subject to large case backlogs, and incident responders must be able to quickly identify the source and cause of security breaches. In both these cases time is a critical factor. Unfortunately, today’s memory analysis tools can take many minutes or even hours to perform even simple analysis tasks. This problem will only become more prevalent as RAM prices continue to drop and systems with very large amounts of RAM become more common. Due to the volatile nature of data resident in system RAM it is also desirable for investigators to be able to access non-volatile copies of system RAM that may exist on a device’s hard drive. Such copies are often created by operating systems when a system is being suspended and placed into a power safe mode. This dissertation presents work on improving the speed of memory analysis and the access to non-volatile copies of system RAM. Specifically, we propose a novel memory analysis framework that can provide access to valuable artifacts orders of magnitude faster than existing tools. We also propose two new analysis techniques that can provide faster and more resilient access to important forensic artifacts. Further, we present the first analysis of the hibernation file format used in modern versions of Windows. This work allows access to evidence in non-volatile copies of system RAM that were not previously able to be analyzed. Finally, we propose future enhancements to our memory analysis framework that should address limitations with the current design. Taken together, this dissertation represents substantial work towards advancing the field of memory forensics.

Parallel finite element analysis

Finite element analysis is versatile and used widely in a range of engineering andscientific disciplines. As time passes, the problems that engineers and designers areexpected to solve are becoming more computationally demanding. Often theproblems involve the interplay of two or more processes which are physically andtherefore mathematically coupled. Although parallel computers have been availablefor about twenty years to satisfy this demand, finite element analysis is still largelyexecuted on serial machines. Parallelisation appears to be difficult, even for thespecialist. Parallel machines, programming languages, libraries and tools are used toparallelise old serial programs with mixed success. In some cases the serialalgorithm is not naturally suitable for parallel computing. Some argue that rewritingthe programs from scratch, using an entirely different solution strategy is a betterapproach. Taking this point of view, using MPI for portability, a mesh free elementby element method for simple data distribution and the appropriate iterative solvers,a general parallel strategy for finite element analysis is developed and assessed.

The Empirical Testing of Musical Performance Assessment Paradigm

The purpose of this study was to test a hypothesized model of aurally perceived performer-controlled musical factors that influence assessments of performance quality. Previous research studies on musical performance constructs, musical achievement, musical expression, and scale construction were examined to identify the factors that influence assessments of performance quality. A total of eight factors were identified: tone, intonation, rhythmic accuracy, articulation, tempo, dynamics, timbre, and interpretation. These factors were categorized as either technique or musical expression factors. Items representing these eight variables were chosen from previous research on scale development. Additional items, along with researcher created items, were also chosen to represent the variables of technique, musical expression and overall perceptions of performance quality. The 44 selected items were placed on the Aural Musical Performance Quality (AMPQ) measure and paired with a four-point Likert scale. The reliability for the AMPQ measure was reported at .977. A total of 58 volunteer adjudicators were recruited to evaluate four recordings that represented one of each instrumental category of interest: brass, woodwind, voice, and string. The resulting performance evaluations (N = 232) were analyzed using statistical regression and path analysis techniques. The results of the analysis provide empirical support for the existence of the model of aurally perceived performer-controlled musical factors. Technique demonstrated significant direct effects on overall perceptions of performance quality and musical expression. Musical expression also demonstrated a significant direct effect on overall perceptions of performance quality. The results of this study are consistent with hypothesized model of performer-controlled musical factors.

How does parental contribution affect offspring performance in anadromous and resident brown trout, Salmo trutta L.?

The brown trout, Salmo trutta L., displays one of the most variable and polymorphic life-history strategies of all the salmonids. In some populations, individuals spend their whole life-cycle in the river (freshwater-resident) whereas in others, a varying proportion migrates to sea for variable amounts of time to better feeding conditions before returning to spawn (anadromous). The ‘decision’ if an individual will migrate or not will be determined by the balance of the costs and benefits of following a particular life-history strategy. The balance of these, which do not affect males and females equally, will determine the future success (measured by fitness) of each strategy. This research addresses the influences of parental contribution, mainly maternal effect, of anadromous and freshwater-resident brown trout on offspring performance and subsequent life-history. A partial migratory population of brown trout was studied in the Tadnoll Brook, one of the seven major tributaries on the River Frome. The tributary is classified as a circum-neutral chalk stream, 9.9 km long with a catchment approximately 50 km2. Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analysis (SIA) was used to quantify maternal reproductive contribution of anadromous and freshwater-resident brown trout to offspring and determine the future success (measured by fitness) in terms of size and time of emergence. A panel of 12 microsatellite loci was used to assign parentage to 0+ parr. Using field data collected over 1.5 years on individual fish, this study tested parental influence on offspring performance in terms of size and growth rate and calculate the reproductive contribution of maternal/paternal anadromous and freshwater-residents. Adult life-history strategy was identified using a combination of results from SIA, PIT tag data and ecological data (body size, temperature). Parr life-history strategy (1+) was inferred using PIT tag detection data. The results of the SIA indicated fry of anadromous females emerged earlier and at a larger size than fry of freshwater-resident females. Parentage assignment of parr was low (28 %), with 8 parr assigned to both parents and 43 assigned to only a single parent. There was no detectable effect of parental life-history on parr size and growth rate, however the raw data may suggest offspring of anadromous parents have an early size advantage but a slower growth compared to offspring of freshwater-resident parents during the first year of the parr stage. Twenty-four percent of the offspring were identified as putative smolts at 2+ and both forms interbred and could produce offspring of each life-history. Estimates of reproductive contribution (SIA and growth) show a higher proportion of anadromous females and males (growth only) contributed to offspring production. The results of this research indicate that the maternal anadromous contribution is higher in the Tadnoll Brook population, affording fitness benefits to their offspring during early ontogeny such as size advantages and emerging at a more profitable time to establish feeding territories. Adult life-history does not appear to influence juvenile (0+ parr) life-history but may have an effect on offspring performance. The presence of both forms in the population suggests the anadromous fitness benefits to offspring may only have an affect during ontogeny and early stages of growth. Then after juveniles reach a size threshold environmental factors influence offspring life-history, resulting in the largest parr with the fastest growth adopting an anadromous life-history.
