The design and application of associative memories for scene analysis

This thesis investigates a novel scene analysis system that determines the identity and the relative positions of unconstrained objects within a natural three dimensional grey scale image. Images may be of 'block filled' or 'line drawn' occluded shapes. It utilises the occluding information to discover the relative depth of objects in the scene. The system incorporates associative memories, the N tuple pattern recognition process, movable multiple resolution windows and edge detection. The structure and performance of the system and its subsystems is reported. The associative memory incorporates a novel recall procedure which has uses outside the application given here. The work incorporates ideas from the neurophysiology of the human visual system to overcome some of the problems encountered.

A frequent problem in physics and engineering is that of determining a mathematical model for the dynamic performance of a system. It is particularly useful to be able to make measurements which enable such a model to follow changes in the system dynamics in the course of normal operation. Linear control theory, although now being replaced by a more general approach, can still form the basis for such system analysis. Cross correlating signals from a linear process can give a great deal of information about the process dynamics without injecting any test disturbances, or, when test signals are possible, cross correlation can be used to recover dynamic information in the presence of considerable background noise. The use of specially constructed test signals can make cross correlation a powerful technique in the identification of dynamic systems.

Rapid shape characterization of crushed stone by PC-based digital image processing

Aggregate shape and texture are important parameters that have a direct influence on the strength and durability of the asphalt and concrete products made from these materials. Shape is characterized in terms of elongated and flat particles. Typically, a given batch of material is rejected if more than a specific percentage of particles have elongation and flatness ratios which exceed some limiting value. Present procedures for determining these ratios rely heavily on manual measurements which are time consuming and limit the sample size. A recently developed rapid shape analysis system can significantly reduce the time required for this procedure. The new system can determine elongation and flatness for a standard batch of 100 particles in under 10 minutes. The system consists of a PC-based image analyzer. Samples of crushed stone are imaged by two video cameras and the images are processed by the computer to determine the flatness and elongation distributions within the sample. Validation procedures indicate an excellent agreement between the rapid analysis system and standard manual techniques. Additionally, the system can provide two quantitative measures of particle roughness which are not measurable by current manual techniques. Preliminary analysis of shape distributions from a sampling campaign indicate that it is possible to determine the effects of crusher type and material type on shape by examining the feed and product shape distributions. Introductory work with manufactured sands indicates that the analyzer can effectively measure all four shape attributes, none of which can currently be measured by manual techniques. / Master of Science

In der vorliegenden Studie soll die Veränderung emotionaler Verarbeitung depressiver Patienten im Vergleich zu einer gesunden Kontrollgruppe untersucht werden. Als Messinstrument dient uns das EEG, welches als eine nicht invasive, sensitive Methode, die Veränderung der emotionalen Reaktion mittels EKPs darstellbar macht. So soll in dieser Studie ein Paradigma entwickelt werden, welches die Veränderung der emotionalen Verarbeitung von depressiven Patienten erfassen kann, um zukünftig die Effektivität von Psychotherapie anhand objektivierbarer Maße zu evaluieren. / The aim of this study is to examine the alterations in emotion processing of depressive patients compared to a healthy control group. The EEG serves as gauge as it is a non-invasive, sensitive method representing changes in emotional reactions via ERPs. In order to evaluate effectivity of psychotherapy with objective factors we want to develope a paradigm which can determine emotion processing of depressive patients. In the EEG we consider N170, a ERP which highly specific for eyes and further also for facial expression. EPN as one of the earliest reactions to emotional stimuli deflects to higher extend to those emotional stimuli than to neutral ones. Our third element is P300 which is also sensitive for emotional mien.

Analysis Tool for Warehouse Material Handling Data

Effective material handling plays a key role in cutting costs. Well-organized material handling can cut production cost by optimizing product transfer paths, decreasing the damage rate and by increasing the utilization of storage space. This report presents the development of an analysis system for StoraEnso Hylte’s paper reel database. The system extracts and classifies key points from the database which are related to material handling; like attributes related to the product (paper reel), forklift truck information and storage cell utilization. The analysis based on paper reels includes the damage rate and transfer paths of paper reels. A mathematical model is also presented, which tells us that the probability of damage per transport is more important than the number of transports for paper reels handling. The effect of decreasing non-optimal transportation (optimize the path) is very small.
