Optical angular momentum in classical electrodynamics

Mansuripur, Masud 01 June 2017 (has links)
Invoking Maxwell's classical equations in conjunction with expressions for the electromagnetic (EM) energy, momentum, force, and torque, we use a few simple examples to demonstrate the nature of the EM angular momentum. The energy and the angular momentum of an EM field will be shown to have an intimate relationship; a source radiating EM angular momentum will, of necessity, pick up an equal but opposite amount of mechanical angular momentum; and the spin and orbital angular momenta of the EM field, when absorbed by a small particle, will be seen to elicit different responses from the particle.

Multiple analysis of single graviton state functions

Carswell, Robert Francis January 1965 (has links)
The statefunctions of massless particles described by a tensor field are classified by expressing them in terms of the eigenstates of the operator of angular momentum. The general tensor statefunction can also be separated into functions of different parity. By identifying the graviton as a special case obtained by imposing certain auxiliary conditions, familiar from the classical theory of gravitation, one arrives at a multipole analysis of single graviton state-functions. Employing standard composition methods one can use these results to arrive at selection rules governing the decay of objects into two or more gravitons. / Science, Faculty of / Physics and Astronomy, Department of / Graduate

A COUPLED ANGULAR MOMENTUM MODEL FOR THE JOSEPHSON JUNCTION.

DIRIENZO, ANDREW LEWIS. January 1982 (has links)
A model for the Josephson junction is constructed based on two macroscopic angular momentum vectors. These vectors, which interact via a Heisenberg-like Hamiltonian, are defined using Anderson's pseudospin concept in superconductivity. Along with this, a new state vector, which affords a more complete description of the constant-charge-imbalance mode of the junction, is explicitly constructed. The resulting equations of motion lead directly to the basic Josephson results and at the same time provide a simple physical picture for the dynamical behavior of the junction. Both the Anderson (n,(phi)) and Feynman two-state models of the junction are shown to be equivalent to a restricted form of the angular momentum approach. The process of formulating the junction problem in terms of pseudo-angular-momentum together with the above identification constitutes a microscopic derivation of the Feynman method. A perturbation theory calculation is carried out within the full pseudo-angular-momentum equations of motion to determine how this approach differs from the earlier ones.

A Biomechanical Study of Angular Momentum and External Moments During a Ballet Turn

Walters-Stewart, Coren 10 March 2011 (has links)
The following thesis applies equations of motion used in linear locomotion (gait analysis) to the analysis of the purely rotational motion of the fouetté or tour à la seconde. Modifications to the method of analysis include the creation of several MATLAB programs to compute improved estimates of the moment of inertia tensor, three-dimensional angular momentum about the dancer’s centre of mass. The results of this investigation—the quantification of angular momentum and external moments—are compared to similar results from gait analysis to demonstrate how the dancer maintains balance during rotational motion. The variables calculated by the MATLAB programs are particularly relevant in the field of balance control research in the context of inputs into the body’s balance control systems.
