Bornia Poulsen, Camilo José January 2012 (has links)
Every beginning of term, educational institution managers face a typical problem: planning the classes' timetable, according to their lesson demands for each subject, considering, furthermore, the schedule constrains of all actors. Known as school timetabling problem (STP), this typical combinatorial optimization problem is remarkably complex due to the high number of variables and constraints. Owing to the rules of each country's educational system, STP can have uncountable variants, each one with their own set of features. This dissertation searches to offer a model to STP considering the Brazilian Educational System, focusing on allocating not only the teachers but also determining which subject each teacher should teach and allocating classrooms, laboratories and the like. The propesed model, based on the metaheuristic simulated annealing, was conceived so that each educational institution using this model has the freedom to define which penalty will be applied to each possible kind of noncomformity and constraint, in order for the applied algorithm to find a solution at the lowest cost as possible.

Estimation of Complex Permittivity of Silicon at 2.45 GHz Microwave Frequency

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: Estimation of complex permittivity of arsenic-doped silicon is the primary topic of discussion in this thesis presentation. The frequency that is of interest is 2.45 GHz, frequency typically used in conventional microwave ovens. The analysis is based on closed-form analytical expressions of cylindrical symmetry. A coaxial/radial line junction with the central conductor sheathed in dielectric material, which is As-doped silicon in this case, are analyzed. Electrical and magnetic field equations governing the wave propagation in this setup are formulated by applying the necessary boundary conditions. Input admittance is computed using the fields in the device and reflection coefficient is calculated at the input. This analytical solution is matched to the reflection coefficient acquired by experiments conducted, using VNA as the input source. The contemplation is backed by simulation using High Frequency Structural Simulator, HFSS. Susceptor-assisted microwave heating has been shown to be a faster and easier method of annealing arsenic-doped silicon samples. In that study, it was noticed that the microwave power absorbed by the sample can directly be linked to the heat power required for the annealing process. It probes the validity of the statement that for arsenic-doped silicon the heating curve depends only on its sheet properties and not on the bulk as such and the results presented here gives more insight to it as to why this assumption is true. The results obtained here can be accepted as accurate since it is known that this material is highly conductive and electromagnetic waves do not penetrate in to the material beyond a certain depth, which is given by the skin depth of the material. Hall measurements and four-point-probe measurements are performed on the material in support of the above contemplation. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. Electrical Engineering 2014

Electrical impedance tomography algorithm using Simulated Annealing as a search method.

Claudia Natalia Lara Herrera 14 November 2007 (has links)
Neste sentido, a imagem final maximiza a verossemelhança. / The Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) is a non-invasive technique used to produce images that represent the cross-sectional electrical resistivity distribution, or conductivity, within a domain, for instance the human thorax, from electrical measurements made through electrodes distributed on its boundary. Currents are injected and voltages measured, or vice-versa. Distributions of resistivity variations or distributions of absolute resistivity can be estimated, producing difference or absolute algorithms. The present work develops and evaluates the performance of a probabilistic algorithm based on the Simulated Annealing method (SA) to obtain absolute resistivity distributions in two dimensions (2D). The SA differs from the traditional search methods, no evaluation of objective function derivatives is required and it is possible to escape from local minima through the use of the Metropolis criterion for acceptance of new points in the search space. The developed algorithm solves the inverse problem of EIT by solving iteratively a direct problem, using random resistivity distributions. The random search is accomplished by the Metropolis algorithm. In the absence of regularizations, it is assumed that the resistivity distribution, an image, that minimizes the difference between the measured electrical potentials on the boundary and computed electrical potentials is the closest to the real resistivity distribution. In this sense, the algorithm maximizes the likelihood. This work contributes to the development of image estimation algorithms applied to lung monitoring, for instance, during mechanical ventilation. To solve this non-linear ill-posed inverse problem it is necessary to introduce prior information in the form of restrictions of the solution space or regularization techniques. The tests are carried out using simulated data obtained from a numerical phantom, an experimental phantom and human thorax data. The results show that the localization of an object, the size of an object and the resistivity of an object are within the accuracy of EIT obtained by classical methods, but the computational effort is large. The advantages and feasibility of the proposed algorithm were investigated.

Evaluation of two Methods for Identifiability Testing / Utvärdering av två metoder för identifierbarhetstestning

Nyberg, Peter January 2009 (has links)
This thesis concerns the identifiability issue; which, if any, parameters can be deduced from the input and output behavior of a model? The two types of identifiability concepts, a priori and practical, will be addressed and explained. Two methods for identifiability testing are evaluated and the result shows that the two methods work well if they are combined. The first method is for a priori identifiability analysis and it can determine the a priori identifiability of a system in polynomial time. The result from the method is probabilistic with a high probability of correct answer. The other method takes the simulation approach to determine whether the model is practically identifiable. Non-identifiable parameters manifest themselves as a functional relationship between the parameters and the method uses transformations of the parameter estimates to conclude if the parameters are linked. The two methods are verified on models with known identifiability properties and then tested on some examples from systems biology. Although the output from one of the methods is cumbersome to interpret, the results show that the number of parameters that can be determined in practice (practical identifiability) are far fewer than the ones that can be determined in theory (a priori identifiability). The reason for this is the lack of quality, noise and lack of excitation, of the measurements.

Tsouroula, Aikaterini 07 July 2017 (has links)
Heterochromatin is the tightly packed form of repetitive DNA, essential for cell viability. Its highly compacted and repetitive nature renders DSB repair a challenging process that cells need to overcome in order to maintain their genome integrity. Developing a highly specific and robust CRISPR/Cas9 system to target pericentric heterochromatin, we showed that DSBs in G1 are positionally stable and repaired by NHEJ. In S/G2, they relocate to the periphery of this domain to be repaired by HR. This relocation process is dependent of resection and RAD51 exclusion from the core domain of heterochromatin. If these breaks fail to relocate, they are repaired within heterochromatin by NHEJ or SSA. On the other hand, DSBs in centromeric heterochromatin activate both NHEJ and HR throughout the cell cycle. Our results reveal the differential repair pathway choice between centromeric and pericentric heterochromatin that also regulates the DSB position.

Jin, Yuan 10 December 2014 (has links)
Annealing twin is a crystallographic defect that is largely reported in F.C.C. metals especially those with low stacking fault energy. Despite the amount of work dedicated to the subject, the understanding of annealing twin formation mechansims is not complete in the literature. In the present work, by applying both experimental and numerical tools, we tried to have a more profound understanding of this phenomenon, which is essential to Physical Metallurgy. For this purpose, different F.C.C. Materials including 304L stainless steel, commercially pure nickel and nickel based superalloy Inconel 718 are investigated. We confirmed that annealing twins are mainly formed in the recrystallization regime, especially driven by the migration of recrystallization front into deformed regions by using in situ EBSD technique. In addition, we found in the in situ observations that there are almost no twins generated in the grain growth regime. This observation is confirmed by another grain growth experiment performed on Inconel 718. Therefore, curvature driven grain boundary migration by itself is not sufficient to generate annealing twins. A new atomistic model to explain annealing twin formation mechanism, in which the effect of migrating boundary curvature is considered, is proposed. The effects of different thermo-mechanical factors, including prior deformation level, initial grain size, annealing temperature and the heating velocity, on annealing twin formation are determined via two experiments performed on commercially pure nickel. Based on the idea of grain boundary curvature, we proposed a method to quantify recrsytallization front tortuosity. In the present study, we show evidence that this quantity is positively correlated with the twin density at the end of the recrystallization regime. In addition to experimental studies, numerical tools including both mean field and full field approaches are applied to model annealing twin evolution during grain growth by taking into account the revealed mechanisms. A basis of a new mean field model is proposed to model annealing twin density evolution during grain growth. This model, which has only one parameter to be identified, provides a better consistency with the experimental data of Inconel 718 compared to the Pande's model. Besides, full field approaches are also applied to simulate the overall microstructure evolution during grain growth. Two implicit methods i.e. the level set and the multi-phase-field methods are compared in terms of their formulations and their numerical performance in anisotropic grain growth simulations. It is the first time that these two methods are compared in the finite element context with non-structural mesh. In the present numerical context, the level set method is more suitable to describe strong anisotropy in grain boundary energy. A new methodology is thus developed in the level set framework to simulate annealing twin evolution during grain growth. This methodology, in which we can insert annealing twin boundaries into synthetic microstructures and distinguish coherent and incoherent twin boundaries, is proven to be able to counting for the strong anisotropy introduced by coherent annealing twin boundaries.

Sputtering-based processes for thin film chalcogenide solar cells on steel substrates

Bras, Patrice January 2017 (has links)
Thin film chalcogenide solar cells are promising photovoltaic technologies. Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS)-based devices are already produced at industrial scale and record laboratory efficiency surpasses 22 %. Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 (CZTS) is an alternative material that is based on earth-abundant elements. CZTS device efficiency above 12 % has been obtained, indicating a high potential for improvement. In this thesis, in-line vacuum, sputtering-based processes for the fabrication of complete thin film chalcogenide solar cells on stainless steel substrates are studied. CIGS absorbers are deposited in a one-step high-temperature process using compound targets. CZTS precursors are first deposited by room temperature sputtering and absorbers are then formed by high temperature crystallization in a controlled atmosphere. In both cases, strategies for absorber layer improvement are identified and implemented. The impact of CZTS annealing temperature is studied and it is observed that the absorber grain size increases with annealing temperature up to 550 °C. While performance also improves from 420 to 510 °C, a drop in all solar cell parameters is observed for higher temperature. This loss is caused by blisters forming in the absorber during annealing. Blister formation is found to originate from gas entrapment during precursor sputtering. Increase in substrate temperature or sputtering pressure leads to drastic reduction of gas entrapment and hence alleviate blister formation resulting in improved solar cell parameters, including efficiency. An investigation of bandgap grading in industrial CIGS devices is conducted through one-dimensional simulations and experimental verification. It is found that a single gradient in the conduction band edge extending throughout the absorber combined with a steeper back-grading leads to improved solar cell performance, mainly due to charge carrier collection enhancement. The uniformity of both CIGS and CZTS 6-inch solar cells is assessed. For CZTS, the device uniformity is mainly limited by the in-line annealing process. Uneven heat and gas distribution resulting from natural convection phenomenon leads to significant lateral variation in material properties and device performance. CIGS solar cell uniformity is studied through laterally-resolved material and device characterization combined with SPICE network modeling. The absorber material is found to be laterally homogeneous. Moderate variations observed at the device level are discussed in the context of large area sample characterization. Power conversion efficiency values above 15 % for 225 cm2 CIGS cells and up to 5.1 % for 1 cm2 CZTS solar cells are obtained.
