Modeling of an Adaptive Parallel System with Malleable Applications in a Distributed Computing EnvironmentGhafoor, Sheikh Khaled 15 December 2007 (has links)
Adaptive parallel applications that can change resources during execution, promise increased application performance and better system utilization. Furthermore, they open the opportunity for developing a new class of parallel applications driven by unpredictable data and events. The research issues in an adaptive parallel system are complex and interrelated. The nature and complexities of the relationships among these issues are not well researched and understood. Before developing adaptive applications or an infrastructure support for adaptive applications, these issues need to be investigated and studied in detail. One way of understanding and investigating these issues is by modeling and simulation. A model for adaptive parallel systems has been developed to enable the investigation of the impact of malleable workloads on its performance. The model can be used to determine how different model parameters impact the performance of the system and to determine the relationships among them Subsequently, a discrete event simulator has been developed to numerically simulate the model. Using the simulator, the impact of the variation in the number of malleable jobs in the workload, the flexibility, the negotiation cost, and the adaptation cost on system performance have been studied. The results and conclusions of these simulation experiments are presented in this dissertation. In general, the simulation results reveal that the performance improves with an increase in the number of malleable jobs in a workload, and that the performance saturates at a certain percentage of rigid to malleable jobs mix. A high percentage of malleable jobs is not necessary to achieve significant improvement in performance. The performance in general improves as the flexibility increases up to a certain point; then, it saturates. The negotiation cost impacts the performance, but not significantly. The number of negotiations for a given workload increases as number of malleable jobs increases up to a certain point, and then it decreases as number of malleable jobs increases further. The performance degrades as the application adaptation cost increases. The impact of the application adaptation cost on performance is much more significant compared to that of the negotiation cost.

Comparing Progressive Web Applications with Native Android Applications : An evaluation of performance when it comes to response timeFransson, Rebecca, Driaguine, Alexandre January 2017 (has links)
Web applications are often described as being cross-platform. They are accessible from a multitude of different web browsers, which in turn are running on a multitude of different operating systems. For a time now, developers have used many different tools to create cross-platform applications for mobile devices with web technologies. However, these applications fail to deliver when taken out of their native environment, and often do not feel native at all. Enter Progressive Web Applications, PWA. PWA’s are applications written for the web with web technologies, running in a browser, but seasoned with some techniques that can make them behave like a native application when running on a mobile device. They are just ordinary web applications with native behaviour such as offline support, installability, and push notifications. The question that arises is - can this new type of web applications match Native Android Applications in performance, especially the response time when accessing the device's hardware? This report will try to answer that question

Designing a tablet application for an emergency department : The implications of context on concept development and interface designKronsell, Victoria January 2013 (has links)
Mobile devices are becoming more common in health care and studies show that they can contribute with a lot of benefits. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate what important factors should be considered when designing an application for a tablet computer to be used at an emergency department. The project involved creating a prototype for an application that would be used as a decision support system for doctors when a stroke patient arrives to the emergency department – a case where time and accuracy are both equally important. Research was conducted by doing field studies and interviews, and the results from these helped to develop a prototype. Usability tests were conducted on the prototype and changes were made accordingly. The study showed that there are many important factors to consider; e.g. identifying the workflows, creating a non-linear system and overview support.

Progressiva webbapplikationer : En analys av erfarenheter och omfattning av tekniken i Sverige / Progressive Web Applications : An Analysis of the Experience and Scope of the Technology in SwedenGustafsson, Victor, Olsson, Martin January 2020 (has links)
Today, applications can be developed in a variety of ways using various techniques. In recentyears, the technology progressive web applications have become an increasingly commonfeature in this context. In fact, progressive web applications are considered by many to be thefuture of application development. However, it was incredibly difficult to find information onthe extent to which the technology was used in Sweden or in other countries. Prior to thiswork, we suspected that the technology of progressive web applications was not used to theextent that it had potential to, and it deserved to be paid more attention. In this thesis, you as a reader will gain an insight into how common progressive webapplications were among Swedish companies' websites in general. The work also examinedwhat experiences and knowledge Swedish application developers had of the technology. Anumber of interviews with Swedish developers were conducted where the results indicatedthat there was more to be desired regarding the developers' knowledge and experience aboutthe technology. The indication that Swedish developers had limited knowledge andexperience of progressive web applications was also reflected in how well Swedishcompanies generally used the technology.

Web application for Office of International Programs.Jarugu, Swathi January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Computing and Information Sciences / Mitchell L. Neilsen / The mission of the Office of International Programs is to lead the internationalization of Kansas State University by supporting and collaborating with faculty, students, and scholars. The units within the Office of International Programs provide primary support for both in coming international students, faculty and researchers at K-State, faculty and researchers going abroad, etc.
It seldom happens that all the international activity of a particular university is organized under the same hood. There is no conventional source that handles all the information (International activity) in a single web application, it is usually scattered over the web. This makes it tough for prospective students or researchers to search for people or programs. Therefore, to overcome this issue, the current project has been implemented.
The main objective of the current project is to design a website for the Office of International Programs. This website hosts information about International Faculty, Study Abroad Programs, International Agreements, Alumni Groups and International Students on a single platform. This portal would offer the administrators with different modules where information about a particular program can be added, edited, deleted and viewed.
Primary focus of this application is to display information in an innovative format and to enable different users to navigate over the web site easily. This website makes the searching process easy for users. This site is significantly responsible for viewing of information and maintaining a database for various people and programs for Office of International Programs at Kansas State University.

The application of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) in speeding up the flow of materials in an industrial manufacturing processGatsheni, B.N., Aghdasi, F. January 2007 (has links)
Published Article / RFID can work in conjunction with sensors in material handling especially on a conveyor belt. A dozen different graded tagged products can be picked up by the RFID system in real-time and transported to respective chutes into automatic guided vehicles (AGV) for transportation to specific storage locations. The development of this system is now at an advanced stage. Our predictions to date show that the application of RFID in material handling in a manufacturing environment can assist in the fast flow of components throughout the assembly line beyond what available systems can do.

Automatic student attendance register using RFIDKuriakose, R.B., Aghdasi, F. January 2007 (has links)
Published Article / The purpose of this project is to investigate the application of Radio Frequency Identification, RFID, to automatic student attendance register. The aim is that the students in any class can be recorded when they carry their student cards with them without having to individually swipe the card or allocate special interaction time. The successful implementation of this proposal will facilitate such record keeping in a non-intrusive and efficient manner and will provide the platform for further research on the correlation between attendance and performance of the students. The opportunity for related research is identified regarding the range of the parameters involved, ensuring that individual identifications do not clash and interfacing challenges with the central record keeping are overcome.

Les applications bancaires mobiles peuvent-elles fidéliser la génération Y?Di Stasio, Pascale January 2013 (has links)
Abstract: Despite an exhaustive research, very few academic papers regarding loyalty in the context of mobile banking application exist in the marketing, technologies and banking literature. However, banking corporation have launched mobile banking applications in the Quebec's market and are now interested in knowing if this new distribution channel can generate value for their new upcoming important market: The Generation Y (Gen-Y). This research aims to analyse the impact of mobile banking services on Gen Y's loyalty. An experimentation with three scenarios presenting a different banking service (online or mobile) was performed. The results show there are no significant differences between the type of services (between scenarios). Furthermore, it seems that, at the time of this investigation, loyalty was greater in the online context than on any of the remaining mobile context. This observation was consistent in all perceived value dimensions. The results of our structural equation modeling demonstrate a significant relationship between variables Under study. Therefore, depending on the choice of modelization : (1) perceived emotional value has a significant positive impact on customer satisfaction ; (2) perceived functional value - Quality - Display has a significant positive impact on customer satisfaction; (3) perceived functional value - Quality - Security has a significant positive impact on customer satisfaction; (4) perceived functional value - Quality - Control over financial matters has a significant positive impact on customer satisfaction ; (5) perceived emotional value - Familiarity has a significant positive impact on customer satisfaction and (6) customer satisfaction has a significant positive impact on customer loyalty. Given these results, it seems that marketing managers should aim to increase the perceived functional value - Quality and perceived emotional value of mobile banking services for Generation Y users. Aspects such as Display, Security, Control over Financial matters and Familiarity seems to bring value to Gen-Y. They should also segment the Gen-Yers based on their annual income and also on their level of parental dependence in order to better target this segment that could really generate behavioural loyalty.||Résumé : Malgré une recherche intensive, très peu de recherches académiques concernant la loyauté dans le contexte des applications bancaires mobiles existent dans la littérature marketing, bancaire ou des technologies.
