The appropriation of African traditional healing by the Zionist Churches: a challenge to the mission churches in Gaborone ”Botswana”Matsepe, Shale Solomon 30 November 2004 (has links)
The Zionist type of churches under the African Independent Churches have proven to be a force to be reckoned with against the more organized ecclesiastical movements (in particular the Mission Churches). This can be seen in their emphasis around matters related to culture and its methods of healing. As s result this led to the migration of people from the mission churches to these churches and threatened their existence in Botswana. The mission churches have been experiencing the decline in their membership to the Zionist churches because of the lack of openness to the cultural and the value systems of Batswana in Botswana. Mission churches were left with an option of doing introspection and finally acknowledging their failures to contextualise their theology and Christianity among the people they serving. Mission churches ended up opening their doors to the needs of their members. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M.Th. (Church History)

Recycled realities : the exploration of source matieral in contemporary pictorial artDu Plessis, Daniel 06 1900 (has links)
The use in pictorial art of visual reference to prototypes and conventions in encoding
reality forms the crux of the theoretical research. The theoretical component complements
the practical research, which focuses on the interplay between perceptions of 'reality' and
visual conventions in landscape art. The existence of diverse realities, based on individual
ideological and sociocultural perspectives, is acknowledged. In encoding these realities, artists
may draw on a reservoir of stylistic, formal and conceptual prototypes. Visual reference
constitutes an allegorical procedure because the artist refers to an antecedent text in the
representation of a particular 'reality'. Pictorial signs also rely on conventions to convey
meaning. Both the perception and the artistic recreation of different realities may thus be
regarded as recycling processes. In a world saturated with visual information, reference to
prototypes is a powerful procedure which assists contemporary pictorial artists in the creation
of meaningful images of current realities. / Art History, Visual Arts & Musicology / M.A. (Fine Arts)

Appropriating Judean post-exilic literature in a postcolonial discourse : a case for ZimbabweRugwiji, Temba 06 1900 (has links)
The narratives about the postexilic Judean community are an ancient biblical account of the
socio-economic and political experiences of the Judeans when they were finally restored back to
Judah from Babylonian captivity. Although the Judean restoration was celebrated when they
were restored by King Cyrus’ decree, real freedom did not prevail in the Persian province of
Yehud; corruption, usury, greed, oppression, enslavement and loss of property impacted
negatively on the poor. The leadership expropriated from poor citizens land, vineyards, and
houses in exchange for food. In addition, the governors also charged heavy interest on money
borrowed by poor members of society. Parents and their children were subjected to enslavement.
In response to these corrupt practices, Nehemiah challenged the leadership to stop oppressing the
poor. Nehemiah went further to provide food to the starving Judeans and other people from
surrounding nations which served as a stimulus to strive towards alleviating poverty and starvation among communities.
By employing an approach known as hermeneutics of appropriation, this thesis
appropriates the experience of the postexilic Judean community to the post-independence
Zimbabwean context. Between the years 1999 and 2008 many people lost their lives due to
unemployment and lack of income, shelter, nutrition, and access to health-care facilities because
of the economic meltdown following the controversial fast-track land reform programme in
Zimbabwe. The majority of people are still experiencing the negative impact of the land reform
as people strive to make a living in the absence of jobs and income scarcity. Corruption by the
leadership has continued to further exacerbate starvation among the poor until today. This study attempts to employ the biblical Nehemiah’s social justice reforms (Neh 5) to
challenge the Zimbabwean leadership to focus on rebuilding the country which was ravaged by a
decade of both political and socio-economic crises. Lessons drawn from Nehemiah would be
used to stimulate the leadership in the Zimbabwean government and members of society at large,
to strive towards helping the poor and alleviating poverty. / Old Testament & Ancient Near Eastern Studies / D. Litt. et Phil. (Biblical Studies)

The Adversity Pop Culture Has PosedJoseph, Darel 13 August 2014 (has links)
I am a collage artist working with multiple mediums such as paint, photography, video, audio, and performance. As a New Orleans’ native, I have a unique history that is unflattering, for my history echoes that of America’s historical misdeeds. I make sociopolitical art because I am of a historically oppressed people. I make art that celebrates my diverse culture that is a collage of Native American, African, and New Orleans’ French Creole.

[en] This thesis focus on teaching Portuguese as a second language to deaf people under
a socio-interactional approach to discourse. The study analyses fundamental aspects that
appear in the process of teaching/learning Portuguese, in its written form, in a school
named Centro Educacional Pilar Velazquez. This school proposes Bilingual Education to
deaf people. This work aims at serving as a basis tothose teaching professionals involved in
the universe of deafness. We raise some significant theoretical issues: the Brazilian Sign
Language (LIBRAS) as the legitimate language of the deaf comunity, their first language;
deafness under an anthropological point of view; reflections on the social meaning of
written language and its implications regarding the world surrounding deaf people; the
orientation of Portuguese when it is viewed as a second language. From these pillars, we
have analysed deaf students´s compositions, enlightening and pointing to a genuine -
although often not identified - process of learning written language. Our research intends to
explicit how deaf people can be regarded as totally capable of developping their
potentialities, under an interactional perspective of discourse and by means of the progress
shown in their written work.

[en] PERFORMANCE VERIFICATION METHODOLOGY OF MULTIPHASE FLOW METERS IN ALLOCATION MEASUREMENT IN THE OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY / [pt] METODOLOGIA DE VERIFICAÇÃO DE DESEMPENHO DE MEDIDORES DE VAZÃO DE FLUIDO MULTIFÁSICO NA MEDIÇÃO PARA APROPRIAÇÃO NA INDÚSTRIA DE ÓLEO E GÁS NATURALLUIZ OCTAVIO VIEIRA PEREIRA 20 February 2019 (has links)
[en] The multiphase flowrate (MM) was driven by the necessity of the oil and gas industry to measure the production flow of the wells that are commonly composed of oil, gas and water. In October 2015, the National Agency for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) published the Technical Regulation for Measurement of Multiphase Fluid for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Water produced, which presents
the requirements through plans that oil and gas companies need to prepare and submit for authorization to apply the MM in the measurement for allocation. However, this regulation does not specify the methodology that should be used in the so-called performance verification plan to evaluate the performance of the MM in the field, it being incumbent on each operator to develop its methodology for this
purpose and present the ANP. This work proposes and applies a methodology for performance verification for MM with test results performed in the laboratory with real fluids and in oil and gas field. It was observed that short duration tests, below 1000 seconds, tend to generate higher uncertainties than long tests, higher than 1000 seconds, such as those performed on the platform. Thus, the higher measurement uncertainty results generated in the laboratory with short integration times can be considered more conservative than the results of the tests performed in the platform.

Chinese Enough For Ya? Disrupting and Transforming Notions of Chineseness through Chinesenough TattoosChan, Karen Bic Kwun 31 August 2012 (has links)
Using interpretive methods of social inquiry, this thesis explores the socio-political significance of body tattoos made of Chinese-like text, which have recently become popular Western phenomena. It theorizes how contemporary Western tattooing complicates bodily and social boundaries, providing context to interrogate ideas of authenticity. Coining the term "Chinesenough" (from “Chinese” and “enough”), I describe how many such tattoos do not reflect in Chinese what many wearers and viewers assume they do. I contrast how Chinesenough tattoos (re)produce whiteness to the multiple and contradictory Chinesenesses that are also (re)produced. Reading Chinesenough flash art on tattoo studio walls as objects constituting social space, I consider the social meaning of their English subtitles and manner of organization. I theorize the body’s absence from Chinesenough flash art while articulating my body’s sense experience of encountering the same. Finally, I produce and theorize five illustrations that carnivalize Chinesenough iconography to disrupt and transform the phenomenon.
